“The chances are high that Jack will win this election,” pointed out Rosemary, discussing with her daughter Caroline Winter and grandson, Jack, in her office, “If Emily had not disappeared any sooner; Jack's position would not have been as stable as it is now.”
“But she can come back anytime,” said Caroline, trying to reason with her mother, “and with her grudge against you and Jack, I don’t think it will help at all. We should not forget, she is more popular with the public because of her ‘White Mother’ drama at Hope.”
“She’s not going to come back,” said Jack, inattentively drumming his fingers on the desk, “And nobody should forget, Hope belongs to us. Emily was just being too interfering over there. Obviously, that had put her in the spotlight.”
“How can you be so sure that she won’t come back?” asked Caroline, sceptically. And she looked at Jack and then at her mother.
Rosemary coughed harshly and Jack looked at her and she glared at him. Jack immediately understood.
“It’s just a wild assumption,” said Jack, confidently, “I don’t think I need to explain to you of all people, why she won’t come back, Aunt Caroline.”

“You are right, Jack!” said Caroline, patting him on his shoulder and turning to her mother, she said, “The day I saw her, I knew she was a bad seed. I had told you not to associate our family with such a low-standard nothing. No background, no status...ohh! She used to make me feel tainted.”
“There is no need to repeat all that over again, Caroline,” ordered Rosemary, but still Caroline continued to say what she had to say.
“And then she abuses her newly-found status given to her and humiliates us in front of the world. I mean,” then turning to Jack, who was silently listening to her, she said, “Of all the girls around the city, you had to choose this bad-breed.”
“That’s enough, Caroline;” said Rosemary, loudly, “Do not forget it was our decision to bring her into this family, Jack was in love with her, don’t blame him for anything.”
Caroline smiled maliciously and asked, “Did her child really die in her womb, mother, or you had to abort it for it was not Jack’s?”
“Stop it, Aunt Caroline,” cried Jack, banging the table and Caroline looked away from him still smiling, “Let’s not talk so rudely about the....”

Jack stopped and looked at Rosemary again, whose expression became graver and he said, “About the past. What’s happened has happened, we can’t change it. But we need to focus on the present right now.”
“If Jack wins this election, you will take over his position at office,” declared Rosemary, clearly indicating they should not continue this conversation again, “As for your position, Caroline, I’m considering the Dubois.”
“Are you joking, mother?” interfered Caroline, mocking, “Faye Dubois? Her head is thicker than her hip. How can you even be thinking about considering her? Does she think of anything other than which clothes will fit her elephant body?”
“I’m getting tired of your insensible comments,” snapped Rosemary, coldly and it wiped the smile out of Caroline’s face, “I’m considering Melanie Dubois. It’s about time we took the next step into strengthening the Winter-Dubois bonding.”
“Oh my goodness! Are you trying to...” started Caroline again, in her mocking tone.
“No, I’m not getting married to Melanie,” said Jack, with hesitation, “It will harm my image.”

“Okay! But I want to know what if Emily really comes back? How can we handle that?” asked Caroline, seriously.
“Then Jack will forgive her and we will accept her,” said Rosemary, pointing at Jack and he nodded, “That will be the master-stroke in our campaign planning and we will continue to control over Silverdawn.”
As Caroline started to protest, Rosemary said, "You may leave, Caroline. Jack and I have something serious to discuss about."

CHAPTER 7

Reese Winter sat in the bedroom, legs crossed and on the phone. It had been almost a day since her boyfriend had messaged her and after that there was no news from his side. Usually, he is more protective about her and gives her a missed call or sends her a smiley message showing that he is thinking about her.
Reese had always been the most pampered member in the Winter family, being the youngest. Her mother, Caroline Winter, had left her husband, Matthew Hoffman, many years ago and they were neither very keen about rekindling their horribly-damaged relationship. Even if Reese was the only one linking them together, it did not matter. As her father had moved on with other ladies in his life and her mother had finally, after all these years, achieved her goal of becoming the Managing Director of Winter Corporation.
The phone was finally ringing at least. It was switched off before. Reese hoped her boyfriend would pick up the phone. He was really beginning to scare her.

“Hi! Chad? Where have you been? I’ve been so scared that I couldn’t get through to you,” exclaimed Reese, as soon as her boyfriend, Chadwick Dubois, answered his phone.
“Hey hun! I’m like so, so, so, so sorry for scaring you like that. Wish I was there to hold you in my arms to make it upto you,” he replied, eloquently and Reese smiled.
“But what happened? You like totally disappeared,” asked Reese, taking hair out of her face, “I called Ralph but he said he didn’t know where you went after your practice.”
“Yeah, he wasn’t even there for the practice so how could he know where we went after the practice,” said Chad, shoving away a box with his foot, “We had a long practice and after that Jay, Ed and me went for a drink at the Hub.”

“Oh! I didn’t know Ralph didn’t turn up for the practice,” said Reese, relaxing on the bed, “Was he out cruising for girls again? He’s so typical, you know.” And she giggled.
“I guess so,” replied Chad, from the other side of the phone, “I didn’t get a chance to talk to him today. I’ll ask him what happened. Hey babes! Are we still up for tomorrow’s party? Ed called me up again asking me if you can bring those things.”

“Umm...I’m not sure, Chad,” answered Reese, hesitating a lot, “Count me out of the party, please. I don’t want grandmama to find out about it. And if my mother comes to know about it, she’ll ground me for like forever.”
“Don’t be such a spoilsport, girl,” said Chad, casually, “Look nobody will know about it, trust me, sweety! Please don’t back out like that. We’re looking forward to your contribution, Reese.”
“Chad, you know that how difficult it is for me to do things against anybody’s wish around here,” snapped Reese, getting up from the bed, “My mother and I are not exactly in a good mother-daughter relationship and doing something like this unknown to my grandmama can fetch me a lot of trouble. Please try to understand, Chad, I can’t come to this party.”
“All righty, then, I’ll tell others you won’t bring those stuff, you know,” replied Chad, trying to convince her, “But at least some to the party, girl. You know, how much I’ll miss you if you don’t come, right?”
“Chad, I can’t come to this party,” said Reese, persuasively, “I’ve told you before to not to invite me to these kind of parties. I don’t like going there at all.”

“If I can take the risk for myself, why can’t you do that for me, Reese?” said Chad, angrily, “I thought you cared about me. Well! I’m kinda noticing you’re separating yourself from me lately. Is there something we should talk about?”
“NO! I love you, Chad, you can’t think like that, please,” replied Reese, almost horrified, “It’s just...uh...I’m not comfortable at these parties and I can’t...I just can't do the things you guys do. And with the increasing tension in our house with Emily’s disappearance, it’s just getting more and more complicated each day.”
There was silence.
“Chad? Chad? Are you there?”
“Yeah! Hey Reese, I’ll call you later, okay? I’ve a call waiting from a friend,” said Chad, after sometime.
“Sure, you do that, okay? Love you too much,” said Reese.
“Yeah, same here,” replied Chad, wincing.
