Is there a hack that allows sims other than vacation destination residents to be invited as houseguests?

There is an option available when you click on sim to ask them to stay the night. You can use this option as many times as you like. If the sims are really close friends they will stay for days if you don't ask them to leave as long as you feed and entertain them without asking them to stay the night.
