If anyone else can give other advice it would be great.

Tess, after you back up your whole Sims 2 file do this:

1. Move the Downloads folder to your Desktop.
2. Start the game and try to go into one of your houses.

If you can enter them without it crashes then close the game (DO NOT SAVE).

If you can then it's got to be something with your downloads. Lets start from here. Let us know when you try it! We're here for you!

Thanks JOOwish!     I  moved the downloads folder to my desktop and started the game and that didn't work.

You might have a corrupt lot/house.

Try playing a different house and see if it still happens.

If it doesn't, then you know the house is corrupt.
