Chapter Five
The next morning, Katherine and I were finishing breakfast when there was a knock at the door.
Katherine began cleaning up while I went to the door.
“Hi, Jason!” I exclaimed, pulling Jason into a hug.
“Hey, Kim,” he answered.
“How are ya feeling these days?” I asked.
“Okay I guess. I started chemo treatment yesterday.”
We were standing in the foyer when Katherine came in. “Mommy, who was at the door?”
The room fell silent. It was now or never. “Katherine, sweetie, this is your father.”
She looked at Jason. “Daddy?”
Then without another word, Jason pulled his daughter into a tight hug.
When she pulled away, I asked her to go play in her room. Once Jason and I were alone, we began talking. “She’s grown so much,” he sighed.
“Yeah.”
“Kim, I can’t stay long. I just wanted to say that I’m sorry…for everything.”
“Jason, what—”
He pulled me in and gave me a brief peck on the lips. “I’ll always love you, Kimora Ann LeGotto. Goodbye.” His last word was a whisper as he walked out the door, leaving me standing there, wondering.

Chapter Six
Later that night, I was in bed reading when the phone rang.
“Who could that be?” I wondered as I went to answer the phone.
“Hello?”
“Mrs. LeGotto?” said a gruff voice.
“Speaking.”
“This is Officer Alan. I have some bad news for you.”
“Bad news?”
“Yes. It’s about your ex-husband, Jason.”
“What’s wrong?”
“He committed suicide, ma’am. Earlier tonight.”
I dropped the phone and fell to my knees crying.
Apparently, the news of having cancer was too much for Jason. He overdosed on painkillers.
But he left behind a note.
To Kimora, the love of my life:
If you’re reading this, that means I died. I never meant to hurt you. I would never deliberately hurt you or Katherine. I love you both so much; please don’t forget me.
Jason
I crept upstairs to Katherine’s room and stood at her side while she slept.
She was sleeping soundly, so I decided not to wake her up. I’ll tell her in the morning, I thought.

The next morning, Katherine came down into the kitchen, ready for school.
“Honey, you don’t have to go to school today,” I told her.
“Why?”
I sighed. “Sit down.”
“What’s wrong Mommy?” she asked when she saw the tears in my eyes.
“Honey, something happened to Daddy. He’s in Heaven now.” I got up and started sobbing. Katherine came up to me and hugged me, and we cried together.
