Title: Problems with .rar files!
Post by: rylangere on March 22, 2009, 04:39:05 pm
I have run into a new problem when trying to install .rar files.  Instead of a box opening up and asking me if I want to open or save the file, a box pops up and automatically begins downloading my file into a temporary folder (which I cannot find to install my content properly).  The .zip files are installing without any issues.  I've always been able to install .rar files without any problems.  I'm not sure why this is happening, as nothing has changed!  It's just a bit annoying!  Any help would be appreciated.  I have become all too familiar with the help thread recently lol Thanks!

It's a browser setting. You must have accidentally clicked an option to "always do this for this type of file from now on" or similar, so it now automatically downloads them. Without knowing what browser you are using it is not possible to tell you where to change the setting.

I have Internet Explorer 7 and for the life of me I cannot find where that option is set in that browser. When I tried to download a file it automatically gave me the option to Open, Save or Cancel. There was no additional tick box. I know that in older versions of IE there was a tick box that gave you the option to always perform the same action for specific file types. Try digging around in Settings and Internet Options, see what you can find. Or maybe someone with an older version of IE will be able to help you, because unfortunately, even though I tried, I can't. LOL

What version of windows are you using XP or vista?

I am using Windows Vista.  Thanks for trying, Engram!  I just looked and I am also using Internet Explorer 7.

While I use neither Vista nor Explorer at all (XP and Firefox is my own preference), you might try tweaking IE7's settings thusly:

Internet Options--Security--Custom Level
Scroll down to 'Automatic prompting for File Downloads' and set it to Enable.
Then OK and accept the 'Are you really sure you want to do this' prompt.

Also would suggest clearing Explorer's cache and doing so regularly:

Tools--Internet Options--General

In the category Browsing History, choose Delete

In the category Temporary Internet Files, choose Delete Files

Click Yes, then click Close and then OK.

Bloated cache of temp files can easily make IE7 behave buggy.

Thank you for the advice, rwills.  Unfortunately, I tried what you suggested and I am still having the same issue.   :(
Ok, so I just tried to download a .rar file from MTS2 and it did not work... However, I was able to install a .rar file from Insimenator!  So, who knows!

I don't know if this will help your problems, but when you got to internet options, click on the programs tab, then Set programs and change autoplay settings. Programs and games should be "Ask me every time".

Thanks for the idea, caffeinated.joy.  I checked the programs and game settings and it is already set to ask me everytime.  It was a great suggestion though and if you or anyone else thinks of any other ideas, I'd be glad to try them out!

Have you tried right-clicking on the .rar file link and then choosing (depending on what is listed in your right-click menu) 'Save Target As' or 'Save Link As'

If Vista has Windows Explorer, use that browser to open to find the location of your files you downloaded recently. In the left-hand pane, you will see your folders and drives. Find "Documents" (similar to My Documents in XP) and open that folder. You should see a bunch of folders and one of them should be "My Received Files" or similarly named. Open that folder and look inside to see if IE 7 or higher downloaded the files to that folder.

My Downloads (or similarly named folder) is another place to check.

Basically use Windows Explorer to find your temporary folders to find the files you downloaded. The next time you're prompted to download something, change the download location to the desktop so you can easily find your files directly on your desktop and not in a folder somewhere on your hard drive.

I use Fire Fox 3 primarily and IE 8 for other things.

You can learn more about IE7 or 8 by clicking on Help from the menu bar and looking at the topics to learn how to customize your browser to the way you like it.

If you're not sure where to find Explorer, it's under Start?>All Programs>Accessories

Try right clicking a rar file link and chosing "save target as" this will bring upi your present location that saved files for downloads is set to. That should help with locating those files you have already downloaded.

When I right click the .rar file and choose "save target as", I am able to download the file without any problems!  I'm not sure what I may have done to change the way .rar files download, but at least I am able to download them now!  Thanks for the idea, Razamataz!  Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas!  I really appreciate it all the help =)

Stop using IE... it's a poor browser, Firefox is far more stable, more secure, faster and is fully web compliant.
