This is my first Sims Story, and I think it'll be pretty awesome (though I suppose all of you will be the judge of that). Its roughly inspired from Lost (the TV drama on ABC) among other things, so please don't be too annoyed by the blatant similarities (don't worry, its not too bad. Again, all of you will be the judge of this). I'm still in the process of preparing the neighborhood in which the story will take place, so sorry but no pictures yet. They will come, don't worry!

"Gabe! Kathy! Pack Your Bags! We are out of this dump!" Daniel Brenner said, bursting through his front door, much to the surprise of his son and wife.

"My, you're home from work early...did something happen today?" Kathy said, trying to remain pleasant, though frightened by what she was sure her husband was going to say.

"Yup, I quit!" Daniel returned, kissing his wife affectionately on the cheek.

"You can't be serious! How will we ever finance your mother's hospital bills as well as stay ahead on our own finances?!" Kathy looked, surprised at her husband's seemingly rash action.

"No need to worry, I've already found another job...but we have to move. Surprise?" Daniel said, trying to convince his family that a) he wasn't currently on crack and b) this was a good thing.

"But Daniel, this is insane. We can't just up and move!"

"We have to. They can help mom." Daniel explained to his wife, so after a strenuous week of getting their affairs in order, the family packed up in their car and drove to their new hometown.

The Brenners would be far better off than they were, had Daniel's mother not fallen ill. Daniel was an incredibly accomplished chemist, an Oxford graduate, Valedictorian of his high-school class. Daniel's mom was 75 when she had her heart attack. Six months later she suffered a stroke. Fortunately, there was no significant damage done in either case. Even so, her doctor decided that it would be a good idea to do a thorough checkup. The poor woman had malignant tumors in just about every place imaginable. Test after excruciating test, Surgery after surgery, Year after long year, the source of Juliet Brenner's cancer could not be found. Even after every last tumor was removed, more would metastisize from some mysterious corner of the old woman's body. To make matters worse, her health insurance decided she was too much of a liability, and cancelled her policy. Though Daniel made enough of an income to live a very comfortable life with his family, his mother's hospital bills put a tremendous financial strain on their family. Juliet even asked to stop treatment, saying this was God telling her it was time. Years went by without treatment and the cancer only depleted her of strength, nourishment, and happiness, but never killed her.

One day, only a few months prior, Daniel recieved a telephone call from a company called Fairvalley Research. They told him that they might be able to help his ailing mother at no cost, if she would be willing to take part in their research. They also said that they wanted Daniel to work for them as part of the project. He would have to move to Fairvalley, as it would have been too far from where they were currently living, but the offer was too good of one to pass up. So after getting his mother's approval, he went home and broke the "good" news to his family.

"I've arranged for everything that doesn't fit into the new house to be put into public storage until we can find something a bit more sizeable" Daniel explained to his family, as they were driving into Fairview.

"Well how bad is it, dear?" Katherine asked her husband, getting slightly worried.

Daniel looked at his wife about to say something, then smiled fearful of what his wife's reaction would be. "you'll see."

"you have GOT to be kidding me" Gabriel said as they pulled into the driveway of the small, two bedroom home.

Katherine only glared at her husband, getting out of the car. "This had BETTER be temporary." she said, walking into the house. Daniel walked in after her, carrying all of the luggage.

well, atleast its clean. Gabe thought, and entered the house with the rest of his family.

yeah...i'm still designing the neighborhood to go along with it, and i've already taken a few pictures but i just have to put them in there.

It was to be Gabe's first day of school tomorrow. He basically didn't have very many friends back in Milwaukee (where he used to live) so he was actually glad about the move, because it meant a fresh start. So, Gabe set his alarm clock the night before, and went to sleep, excited about the new day that awaited him.

Soon, Gabe's mind left the tangible world, and travelled into that of the subconscious. He was sitting on a small white sectional sofa, in an entirely white room. The floors, walls and ceiling were tiled with the same small white tiles, there was a counter which sat at one end of the small room. It had a sink, and several purple vials, the labels of which had text on them but Gabe couldn't read it. He merely sat there, in the stark-white room, in his usual jeans, shirt and jacket.

The white door on one of the walls opened, and a woman walked in. She sat down next to Gabe. "Name?" The woman said gruffly.
"Gabriel Brenner"
"Age?"
"Sixteen"
"Occupation?"
"Student"
"Family?"
"None Remaining"
"Thank you Gabriel. Now. Drink this completely" the woman said, handing him one of the vials. Upon being closer to the label, he could now see what the label said.

Upon reading this, there was a sharp ringing nose, which only escalated. Gabe was wore up by the sharp ring of his alarm clock, and the promise of a new day.

After grabbing a quick bit to eat, he gathered his things, and left for the bus stop, which the bus was already waiting at. He had to run to catch it in time, fortunately it waited.

Soon, everyone hopped off the bus and arrived at the small school building. Apparently there were only fourteen teenagers in Fairvalley, so there was no need for anything more than a one room school building for his grade. There was no teacher in the room, only a note on the chalkboard reading "In a meeting, will be with you shortly. Your seats are marked by Post-It notes in the appropriate spots. Please be seated and quiet when I come in.  -Dr. Farber"

The kids found their assigned seats, and set their things down, but then chatted idly with their friends. Since Gabe had none of these, he just sat by himself at the table, hoping to god he wouldn't be the lonely, pathetic kid he was back in Milwaukee. The door opened, and a boy walked in...black hair, makeup, nails, the works. He looked around, saw the board, and began scanning the tables for where his name was. He soon found his name at the table with Gabe, and set his stuff down.

"I don't recall seeing you in eighth grade.." He said to Gabe.

"That's because I wasn't here. I'm Gabe." He offered his hand, but the kid just kind of stared at it, and gave him a do-you-honestly-think-i'm-the-kind-of-kid-who-shakes-people's-hands? look.

"I'm Sean."

Sean's kinda cute...wait what? no he isn't. I'm not a damn fag! Gabe thought, convincing himself. The door opened, and a woman walked in. That must be Dr. Farber...wait...I think I've seen her somewhere...huh. Gabe pondered for a moment, and was quickly distracted. His eyes...they're positively....wait...what? they're positively not attractive!!! his mind said, a conflict brewing. Sitting next to this incredibly sexy, not attractive boy will be difficult.

"Class...welcome back to school, and welcome to ninth grade. I will be your Biology teacher, Dr. Farber.  Since today is the first day of the school year, you will only need to be here for two hours..."

The phone on her desk rang, cutting her off. "What? yes..he's here. Wait..why?! Oh my god! I'll be there stat. Uh huh, yes. Well I've got a class right now, but I can dismiss them. The Pillar? I'll be there right away. Yes yes, I'll bring him." "Everyone, I need to be at a meeting. And Sean, they need you too. Everyone else, take one of each of these handouts, and you're dismissed." Dr. Farber grabbed Sean's wrist, and they hurried out of the room. Gabe walked outside, wondering what was going on. "Where are we going, and why do I have to come?!" He heard Sean ask urgently. "The Pillar, and pronto. There's been a .... in the ...." Dr. Farber replied. Gabe listened until he could no longer hear them. I'll ask Sean about it later. He decided. After collecting the papers Dr. Farber left out, he walked home.

Meanwhile, in another place in Fairvalley...

Dr. Farber and Sean burst through the front door of a small Ranch-style house. "How many did we lose?!" Dr. Farber asked, out of breath.

"All of them. Every single one. Sean, Run to The Wardrobe and shut it off immediately, we don't want any of them leaving Fairvalley.  get over to The Id and activate operative 12 on the main terminal. When they arrive, get them all into Lab rooms and lock every single door on your way out. Report back here immediately afterwards."

"Yes sir!" Sean said, and ran out the door.

I read it. Decent stuff, but something to remember when taking pics:

Intriguing stuff. But my connection is running slow at the moment, so I'm having trouble seeing the pictures. But this sounds like it could be fun.

Gabriel sat up in his bed, sweating. Not out of heat, but out of deep and horribly terrifying concern. He ran to the bathroom, and splashed his face with cold water. "Just a dream. It was just a dream, nothing more. Just a dream." Gabe told himself, desperately trying to remind himself that the events which had occured in the dream were in fact, only in his head.

The dream however, would not allow Gabriel to rest. Every time he tried to sleep, the dream would only repeat itself in only more intense horror.

Gabe sat up and grabbed a glass of water from the kitchen. This dream certainly gave him PLENTY to think about. He looked up at the microwave. It read 1:12A. Yeah, definitely not going to school in the morning. he thought.

Each time Gabe tried to sleep, the dream would start again from the beginning:

Gabe would be sitting in Biology class, Dr. Farber babbling on about something that had probably had to do with Biology (a.k.a Gabriel could probably care less). Sean would walk in, and Dr. Farber would glare at him. He was almost twenty minutes late. Sean would then say to her "The Operative is Initiating. I need to talk to you about it after."

"Okay. your tardy is excused...and thank you. So much." Dr. Farber would reply.
 
Sean would take his seat next to Gabriel, and begin to copy the notes he had missed from what Dr. Farber had written on the chalkboard.

He turned to Gabriel.
"So..How's Fairvalley as compared to wherever you lived?" Sean asked, smiling.
Seeing that now I have friends, much better. Gabe thought, but before the words could escape his lips, Sean cut him off.

"Now how could someone as cute as you not have friends?" Sean said, smiling wider.

Gabe looked at Sean confusedly. So...how long have you lived in Fairvalley but before the thought was turned into words, Sean somehow heard it.

"Since forever. My family is the family that founded Fairvalley" Sean said, examining his black painted fingernails. "I really hate it here...there aren't any cute guys." then he turned to Gabriel. "Except you" he said softly.Then, suddenly, and without warning, Sean leaned in and kissed Gabriel right on the lips. It caught Gabe completely off guard, but once he got over the fact, he kissed back.

Even though they were sitting in the front row of the classroom, Dr. Farber, nor any of the students seemed to notice the two boys.  In fact, the classroom seemed to just melt away, and everything was just consumed by Sean's presence.

The first time Gabe went to sleep, the dream it was just a light peck on the cheeks. The Second time it was a peck on the lips. The third time, it was a long, romantic kiss. And the fourth and final time, the two boys were full blown making out. Gabriel couldn't decide what was more disconcerting..The fact that he wasn't disgusted by the thought of kissing Sean, or the fact that he actually wanted to.

Hmmm...
Not sure I'd call it scary yet. Unnerving dreams about schoolmate... we've all been there. Creepy mindreading schoolmate of the same sex is a bit new, but still...

Hopefully find more about the mysterious experiments and stuff soon.

well the whole mindreading part was just an element of the dream. as for the science crap...i'd like to develop the characters a little more first. idk.

even though i know people aren't readin' mah stories, it amuses me. so imunna keep writing. and uhh, sorry (if there is anyone that follows) for not posting. final exams + writer's block = not post.

You must have started this story when my internet was down, or I would have been reading.  But, I started tonight, and I really like it!  It's full of interesting elements that have my curiosity piqued.  Your writing is solid, flows well, and is enjoyable to read.  I laughed when you said that one picture didn't quite work.  Sometimes it's very hard to get your 'actors' to keep their cues, eh?  I have some trouble with that, too.  I would love for you to continue and will try to keep following.

Juliet Brenner was beginning to feel things that she hadn't felt in a long time since she moved to Fairvalley. She felt strength, energy, happiness, and even hope for the future. She was even able to pick up painting again, which brought her great joy. Juliet decided that moving to Fairvalley was the best thing she had ever done.

Something did puzzle her though. Every second tuesday of each month, the door bell would ring at exactly 3:00pm in the afternoon. She would answer the door, not thinking anything of it. The next thing she knew, she would wake up in bed, in her pajamas staring at the clock, reading exactly 11:00pm. Juliet decided it must have something to do with her treatment, and it didn't matter what went on during those eight hours. The ends justify the means right?

Besides, Dr. Far...Farley? Dr. Farley told her that her cancers were getting much smaller. She even had the X-Rays to prove it.

Today is Wednesday. Wednesday is Juliet's favorite day of the week. She woke up this morning promptly at 7:00 am. Groggy, she looked at the digital alarm clock on her nightstand. "WED 5/7" glowed in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Its Wednesday! I must get ready! she thought.
She got up and brushed her teeth, selected her favorite sun dress from the armoir, red lipstick, pearls. She looked like June Cleaver by the time all was said and done.

After spending a few minutes sprucing up the house, the doorbell finally rang. She smiled with excitement and pinched her cheeks, as if she wasn't already wearing blush. Xavier Hamilton stood at the door, bearing the usual brown bag filled with assorted food products, after setting down the bag, he revealed a bouquet of flowers. "Hello, Juliet", he said smiling.

Juliet smiled, and took the flowers, smelling them all the way to the vase which she put them in. She turned back to the old man. "They're beautiful. Thank you so much."

He helped her put the groceries into her antique refridgerator. "Hey, do you wanna get outta here for the night?"

"I'd love to." She said, smiling. So, they hopped in her car, and they went out to Fairvalley's nicest restaurant.

The two of them sat across from each other. Juliet enjoyed her salad, and Xavier had a delicious steak dinner. "Would you like to come back to my place tonight, Juliet?" Xavier said, gazing into Juliet's emerald eyes.

"But Xavier! I thought..." Juliet started,
"Forget the rules, you won't get in trouble." He cut her off.
"Okay, if you're sure that it'll be fine with Fairvalley." She said, looking at him warily.

So after the meal, they went back to Xavier's decidedly peculiar home.
"Xavier...this doesn't feel right..." Juliet said, stopping infront of the wrought iron gates.
"It'll be fine...just be quiet for a minute." he said, and waited for silence. "Administrator Security Manual Override" He yelled at the red house, cupping his hands around his mouth. A lamp on the inside of the second story flashed twice. "Okay, now its safe. Come with me" He said, giving Juliet a peck on the cheek and unlocking the gate.

"Honey, am I not supposed to be here?" She asked, walking into the courtyard with caution.
"Well..technically...but that doesn't matter." Xavier said. "I wanted you to see my home".
Juliet walked in past the second gate, and looked marvelously at all of the greenhouses. "What is this Xavier?"
"Its my life's work, Juliet. You're the only one who's ever seen the inside of my fence."
"Xavier...why are you showing me this? Why am I not allowed here? I believe there is something you aren't telling me. Something that the entire town of Fairvalley isn't telling me." She reached for one of the apple blossoms on the tree just above her. "This is so beautiful, Xavier, but why must it be hidden?"
"Juliet..I can't answer those questions. Why don't we go inside. Its chilly out here" he said
"Alright." She said smiling, though she knew that wherever this relationship would end, it wouldn't end well. Juliet, control yourself. This man is BAD NEWS. You should leave. A voice inside her head told her. Oh hush, you. Another chimed in.

okay! time for a new episode.

I love the creepiness of Juliet answering the door and waking up hours later without a memory of what happened.  And I can't wait to see what Xavier is hiding, and what kinds of mysteries lurk inside his house.

Gabriel's alarm rang loudly, waking him from another homosexually induced nightmare. These were beginning to become a regular occurence. Ugh. I should probably see someone about this. Gabe thought to himself upon waking up.

As he was getting dressed, he remembered that he needed to ask Sean about whatever happened on the first day of school. They were now atleast a month into school, and Gabe woke up every day with the intention of asking him, but every time he saw Sean, his mind would get lost in those big, blue eyes...and the thought was lost with it.

So in order to help him remember, Gabe took a Sharpie and wrote "ASK SEAN" in big, bold letters on his wrist, accompanying "MATH TEST FRIDAY" and "MOW LAWN". As an extra precaution against Sean's gorgeous eyes distracting his thoughts, he put on a pair of really dark sunglasses. On the way out he grabbed an instant breakfast, and headed out the door.

On the way to school, Gabe realized that the only person that he had really befriended at all since moving to Fairvalley was Sean. In fact, he couldn't even really remember the names of any of the other students in his class. In the month he had lived here, his thoughts had pretty much been consumed by Homework and Sean. But mostly Sean. Ugh. I'm hopeless Gabe thought. This is just sad. I'm such a screw up. I can't believe I'm having such faggoty thoughts..

His head in the clouds, Gabe suddenly felt the impact of another body. Soon, he was on the ground, and very confused as to why. Looking up, he saw none other than Griselda Smart. She was the only other name he could remember from his class. Who could forget a name like Griselda? Despite her outlandish name, Griselda Smart was one of the most popular of the Fairvalley ninth graders. She ruled over the teenagers of Fairvalley with a finely-manicured fist. And a cell phone with unlimited text messaging. Sean had told Gabe about the horrors that had been done unto fellow teens with that seemingly innocent device. He said he could speak from personal experience on it, however when Gabe questioned further, Sean simply said he didn't want to talk about it.

Griselda, who had been texting and not paying attention to oncoming sidewalkers, collided with the daydreaming Gabriel Brenner. Little fucker needs to watch where he's going. She thought, but looked at Gabe with a warm smile "I'm so sorry, that was all my fault." She offered her hand to help him up. After becoming upright once more, "why don't we walk to school together?" she asked.

"Sure..I suppose" He said, taking off the sunglasses. Carried away into another daydream, probably involving Sean's getting to know the inside of Gabe's mouth on an intimate level, he didn't say anything to Griselda.

She looked at him inquisitively. "You moved here from.." she scrolled through her phone "Milwaukee right?" Trying to make conversation.

"Yeah.." he said, his daydream broken. "How'd you know?"

"Oh, I think a friend told me. So what is the real world like? Is Chicago totally fabulous or what?!"

Gabe gave her a weird look. "I suppose...I mean, I really like the Shakespeare theater there. what do you mean by 'real world'?"

Griselda looked down for a moment. Shit, he doesn't know? How is that possible? Well I better be careful. She thought. "Oh its just a joke we have around here. The shopping must be totally fab!" she said, enthusiastically.

"I suppose. I mean I don't like shopping all that much." He said, desperately trying to return to his daydream romance.

"I think I would live on Michigan Avenue. So that must've sucked leaving all of your friends and everything behind in Milwaukee. I know for me, it was just awful."

"Yeah, I guess. I mean I didn't really have many friends. I was mostly thankful for the fresh start."

"Oh. Well someone like you MUST have had a girlfriend." She said, flipping her hair behind her shoulder, giving a better view of her rediculously low cleavage.

Gabriel looked off into the clouds, not picking up on the hint. "No, I didn't really date. Who's your boyfriend?" He asked, desperately trying to get her to stop asking him questions.

"No one right now. But I dated that bastard Sean last month. Ugh, that was a disaster."

Gabriel's heart sank at the thought of Sean dating girls. "Oh. What was he like? What was wrong with him? Is he dating someone right now? Did you break it off or did he? Why wasn't it working out?" He asked, a little too eagerly.

That was...odd Griselda thought. "You could totally tell that he totally wasn't into it. He's single, and quite honestly he won't ever find a girl in this town ever again. Why didn't you date in Milwaukee?" She asked, changing the subject.

"Oh. I don't know. I guess I just didn't meet the right person."

"Huh..well what kind of person do you like?"

"I don't know..smart, funny, you know. The usual."

"Well...if you had someone in mind, I'd always be willing to help out a friend." Griselda asked with a wink.

"I don't know...I don't think he would be interested, but thanks anyway." Gabe replied.

"He?" She said, stopping their leisurely pace.

"Oh..oops. Did I say he? I meant she" Gabe said, laughing nervously. His face had gone very pale. "She isn't interested in me. She. Its a girl. heh." Holy fuck!! how did that even happen?! Hopefully she doesn't think....no...its not possible. She couldn't! I mean I corrected myself right?

Griselda sighed. "Yeah....she." It was pretty obvious that she knew.

"Please...don't tell anyone, okay? I'm just... I don't know. Just don't tell anyone. Please!" Gabe pleaded.

"It'll be our secret. Don't worry, my uncle's gay." She said with a little wink. "Its totally cool."

Gabe breathed a sigh of relief. "Thanks so much...I'm dealing with a lot right now...I just have to get it all figured out."

"I understand" she said. She said, and looked back at the crowd of her friends waiting outside the school building, which they had arrived at some time ago. "Well, duty calls. Catch you later!" Griselda ran over to her friends, and whispered to them excitedly.

Gabe sat down and worked on some homework he had neglected to finish the night before. Thank God there are nice people in the world.

"Okay everyone! Its time for class! Come on!" Said Dr. Byrne (the ninth grade history teacher) arriving a couple minutes late. Everyone entered the small room, and by the time Gabriel entered the room, everyone had found seats. Everyone found seats that were as far away from Gabe's usual spot as possible. Gabe looked at everyone confusedly and sat down.

I'm liking this story so far, the secrets of Fairvally are intriguing me, can't wait to find out what happens :) Poor Gabe though! I hope he and Sean get together, they look cute as a couple ;)

Okay, so I'm going to Europe for three weeks (yay!) and I'm gonna be leaving on Tuesday (I'm gonna miss pride. its so sad. but I can go next year I suppose...) So I'll try to get the next episode part posted for y'all before I go, but when I don't post for three weeks, that's why lol.

Love it!  I like the way Gabe is so preoccupied with Sean, and then slips up, lol.  The conversation between Gabe and Griselda was very smooth and easy to follow - great job!

Haha yeah, I've the entire story planned out in my head, so you'll just have to keep following ;D. I've been really busy, and probably won't have one posted (with pictures atleast) for a few weeks. But i'll try to put some new text up, so you can read if you wish.

Oh, and I would absolutely LOVE you if you people would continue discussion on this thread, to keep the story on the first page.

An hour and a half later, Dr. Byrne's lecture was finally finished. "All right. That's all I have for you today, and fortunately for you I have a meeting, so there won't be any homework for tonight." The class breathed a sigh of relief. Dr. Byrne's homework assignments were always long, tedious, and stupid. "Dr. Farber is running a little late, so I expect all of you to behave while this building is left unsupervised. She ought to be here in ten minutes."

Just as he was about to leave, Sean walked in.
     "Oh, Mr. Watson. You've missed today's lecture. I do hope you'll gather the notes from Mr. Brenner." Dr. Byrne said, and left the room.

Gabriel rested his head on his hand, smiled, and sighed when Sean walked in. Stiffled giggles could be heard from the corner where Griselda and her friends sat. Gabe then glanced at his wrist, and remembered the sunglasses.

Sean glanced around the room, and sat down. "What's with the shades, dude?" He asked Gabe upon taking his seat.

They keep me from being blinded by your beautiful smile Gabriel thought. "Oh...they...no reason. So uhh....here are my notes from the lecture." Gabriel said, handing Sean his notes.

"Thanks" he replied, and put the notebook in his bag. "So..what did you say to Griselda?"
"What do you mean?"

Sean rolled his eyes. "You spoke with Griselda. I know you did. Or you did something that pissed her off. Did you wonder why no one would sit within ten feet of you?"

"I suppose...I mean I just figured it was nothing. I walked to school with Griselda this morning. She seems nice...We didn't talk about anything that seems important."

"Huh. Okay..." Sean said, barely believing him. He began to copy the notes from Gabe's notebook into his own.

"Oh yeah! I meant to ask you a while ago. What happened on the first day that you had to get pulled out?"

Sean thought for a moment. "Oh.. I'm helping Dr. Farber with her plant research outside of school for extra credit. An urgent thing came up with one of her hybrid Pear-Apple trees." Gabriel lied.

"Oh okay. cool." Gabriel said. He began to pretend to text someone on his phone, so he looked like he had something to do. Dr. Farber peeked her head in the door, and beckoned Sean outside. He left the room discreetly. Gabriel pretended not to notice.

Once Sean was out of the room, Gabriel heard a deep voice behind him. "Hey Fairyboy." Gabe looked back to see Kenny Meek, who despite his name was not very Meek, and everyone hopes to God he won't inherit the Earth.

"Oh. Hi Kenny." Gabe said dimly. Kenny was the dumb muscle type. He somehow managed to skate by with 60.0% in every class...the exact minimum to be able to stay on the Football team. He, of course, was the star quarter back.
"I hear you like to suck cock" Kenny said.
"Excuse me?" Gabe said, surprised. Kenny usually didn't pursue his annoying nick-names. Yes, Gabriel was known to Kenny and the Football team as Fairyboy.
"Yeah. All you faggots, all you wanna do is suck dick and get fucked in your faggoty asses." He said, balling up his fists.
Gabe looked at him confused and shook his head. "Ugh." He muttered, and got up to leave the room. He decided Kenny was probably high on some variety of illicit drug. Unfortunately for Gabriel, for once in class Kenny was quite sober.
"Hey! I'm talking to you. I ain't gonna take no disrespect from no faggoty-ass fairyboys." He grabbed Gabriel by the shoulder, and spun him around.

Gabriel smirked. "Nice quadruple negative. Are you this dumb all the time, or do you only act this way when you're high on pot?" The rest of the class, who was watching the interaction intently all "Ooooh"ed at the same time, highlighting the dis.

See, Gabriel knew that this wasn't the greatest time to criticize Kenny's intelligence, but when Gabriel gets put in such situations, he intinctively starts acting like a jackass, despite the fact that it isn't the healthiest decision, especially when dealing with people like Kenny. One of the many character flaws inherent in smart, but scrawny students like Gabe.

"Dumb Faggot." Kenny said, and firmly planted his fist into Gabriel's face. Many times. Gabriel was now on the floor, and Kenny, as well as a few of the football team were engaged in taunting and jabbing at the near unconscious Gabriel, who was bleeding everywhere and temporarily didn't have use of his eyes.

Gabe heard footsteps, and then a voice. "Oh my god. Okay. Cro-Magnons! Get the fuck off of Gabriel. What the fuck are you doing?" Gabriel was so glad to hear sean's voice, but currently lacked the ability to smile.

"Oh so the fairyboy's boyfriend comes to the rescue." Kenny said, who had been holding Gabe by the lapel, dropped him, and he hit the floor with a thud and blacked out. Kenny held up his fist "You wanna end up like Fairyboy?" The entire class gasped, and looked at Kenny like he was absolutely insane.

Sean smirked, and pulled out a leather wallet which revealed a badge embossed with an elm tree. "Do you ever wonder what happened to the Klauber family?" Everyone in the classroom stopped cheering, looked at the badge, and immediately began to work on their non-existent homework, pretending nothing had ever happened. Kenny looked at the badge in amazment. "Oh. No, sir. Sorry sir. I hadn't realized that you were the Guard, sir."

"Yes, well now you know. You're pretty dumb for not figuring it out too. Anyway, I expect you to treat Gabriel and myself with the utmost respect. Now, for you punishment. Tomorrow, I expect you to drive to Gabriel's house, and pick him up for school. You'll open doors for him and pull out his chair for him. You're going to pay for his lunch and do his homework tonight and tomorrow night, and you'll have all of the answers correct as well. If he asks for anything else, you'll be more than happy to oblige." Sean said. He removed a pink piece of paper from the wallet and wrote Norman Meek on the top of it, and signed the bottom. "I think you know what will happen if this gets filed. I strongly suggest you obey your punishment, and you do so with happiness. Give me your carkeys. I need to drive Gabe back to The Mortar." He looked at Griselda, who was doing her best to look inconspicuous. "And I want to see you at my house at eighteen hundred. don't be late."

Kenny tossed Sean the keys to his Mercedes, and sat down, cheeks pink with humiliation. Sean carried Gabriel to the backseat of the convertible, and layed him down in the bench. He decided to take Gabriel back to his house instead of The Mortar.

Gabriel woke up, he felt a plush sofa underneath him, and warm blanket laying across his body. He looked up, and saw Sean sitting on a recliner next to the sofa watching television. Sean saw him stir, and looked over. "Oh, you're awake!" he said, smiling.

"Oh, my head. What happened?" Gabriel said groggily.

"You got pounded by the class idiot is all." Sean grabbed some Ibuprofen from the bathroom, and returned. "Here, this should help. I've talked to your parents, you're gonna spend the night over here." Gabe sat up, and he felt a little better knowing he'd be able to stay in the same house as the boy of his dreams. Who he didn't like. At all. Ever.

Sean switched off the TV. "Now, what did you tell Griselda? Cuz...you musta said somthing. Kenny Meek only beats people up when Griselda tells him to. In fact, I doubt he does anything without her prior approval...but that's beside the point. What did you tell her?"

"Oh...well...we just talked about...stuff." Gabe said, avoiding eye contact, his cheeks bright red. Sean opened his mouth to inquire further, but the doorbell rang. Sean got up, and let in Griselda into the living room where they all sat. She winced when she saw Gabriel's bruised face, and sat down in the chair across from Sean's.

"Oh hey Griselda, what's up?" He said, smiling, not understanding what happened. Griselda gave Gabe a curt Hello and looked away.

"Griselda. Let me see your phone." Sean demanded, and she tossed the pink handset over to him, knowing her impending doom. He scrolled through the phone, reading all of her sent messages. He raised his eyebrows as he flipped through them. He looked at Gabe, then at Griselda. "Would you care to tell Gabriel about the texts you've been sending?"

She looked at him, her eyes brooding. "What gives you the right?" She muttered. "What gives you the right?" She said, yelling now "to decide what happens to my family, and what goes on in this god forsaken town?! You know what? If it weren't for my uncle, I would've filed that pinkslip myself last fall! I would be more than happy to leave this ... this abomination to humanity! You're not a fucking day older than I am, and suddenly you get decide everything that goes and doesn't go! What gives you the fucking right?!"

"Zelda.." Sean said. "I didn't choose my rights, remember. I resent this position as much as you do, but its not like I can give it up. And remember whose fault it is that I had to be the new Guard."

Zelda sighed, her eyes glassy. She looked away from Gabriel. "I told everyone about you." She muttered.

Gabriel looked at her "About what?" he said, clearly not catching on.

"I told everyone what you told me."

Gabriel looked at her in panic. "What?! Why?!?! Oh my God!" he got up from the sofa, and ran outside muttering "holy shit! what am I gonna do?!" his eyes nearly in tears.

Griselda,  on the verge of tears, looked at Sean. "What are you going to do to me?! I'm sorry!"

Sean looked at her, shaking his head. "Just go." She let herself out through the back door, and walked home through the woods so she wouldn't be seen.

Once she left Sean walked out the front door and found Gabriel sitting on the porch, crying. "Hey." Sean said, and sat next to him on the porch sofa, and looked out at the stars.
Gabriel just sat there crying, and didn't respond.
"You know, Zelda did the same thing to me. I don't blame her for what she did though. I'm actually glad in some ways that she exposed me, because if she hadn't, I'd probably still be in the closet."

"What did I do? Why did she do that to me?!" Gabriel asked, looking up at Sean.
"She has her reason. That's for her to say, though." He replied, putting his arm around Gabriel's shoulder. Gabriel leaned his head on Sean's shoulder and continued to cry.

 "Lets go inside. Its getting cold" He said, and he helped Sean into the kitchen, where he served him a hot plate of macaroni and cheese, which he at hungrily, his eyes still red from crying. "So...you are too?" he asked, looking up at Sean. He nodded, and smiled, looking into Gabriel with those big blue eyes.
"I don't know what I am. I keeping...having thoughts...but I can't be one of them! I just can't." Gabriel finished his Mac & Cheese, and sighed, leaning against the wall.
"You know what you need?" Sean asked, still smiling.
"What?"
Sean beckoned with his finger, Gabriel leaned in, and turned his head for Sean to whisper into. Sean turned Gabriel's head back to face him and kissed him passionately on the lips. Gabriel pulled away at first, but eventually accepted the kiss, and even returned it a little.

After a few minutes, Sean pulled away and looked at the time. "Its getting late, we should go to bed."

"...kay..." Gabriel replied in somewhat of a stupor. Sean helped him to his bedroom, because Gabe still had something of a limp left from what happened with Kenny. Gabriel fell on the bed, and fell asleep imediately, tired from the day events and his body's recovery. Sean helped the asleep Gabriel into his pajamas, and then Sean too fell asleep, his arms wrapped protectively around Gabe.

I am so sorry to have to inform you like this, but I'm not dead. The body was artificial, but you must not reveal this to anyone. You must carry on with the funeral services as if I had actually died. One of my employees exposed the underground clinic, and I left immediately. I know I should have told you about all of this, but I was afraid you would lose your love for me.

I began conducting secret experiments on my patients two years ago. After a patient would be deemed terminal in my clinic, I would wait a few months and pronounce them dead. One of my colleagues would produce and artificial corpse for the family to bury, and I would move the still living patient to my hidden clinic, where I could test them and try to cure their illnesses. I even cured a few! I would have to kill them afterwards because they had already been pronounced dead, but then I was able to use the research I had discovered in secret to cure the patients in the front clinic. I felt bad for killing the one person, but because of their death I was able to cure many more people who had been given an expiration date.

I began this practice when I was treating a brain cancer patient in 1957. I had been able to cure the cancer in my lab rats and mice, but upon applying the treatment to my patient, she showed no improvement. I asked for consent from her and her family to continue with the tests, but they wouldn't allow it. I began running tests on her in secret, and it escalated from there until it involved five or six secret patients.

One of my nurses found out what I was doing two months ago, and tried to blackmail me for tens of thousands of dollars, or she would reveal my practices to everyone. My colleague (who's name I won't mention, and who began the same controversial practices) and I set up a community where we can practice scientific and medical research without restriction. The location of which must remain unknown, but I will arrange a visit between us, I promise.

I'M NOT GAY. Gabriel screamed in his head. Sean is my friend. We just.... I was just upset because of that awful rumour that Zelda spread about me. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. It wasn't anything. I'm just a little confused. Of course I like women! I even had a girlfriend for a little while in Milwaukee. Besides, friends can comfort each other right? and then Gabe remembered the kiss. I was just really upset and stressed...I...I wasn't feeling right upstairs.

Gabe continued to walk down the street, entirely consumed by his thoughts when he heard an old, tired voice from a bench on the side of the street.

"What're you doin' out past your curfew, son?"

Gabe jumped when he heard the voice. "Oh...I....uhhh....I was just .... going home....." Gabriel hadn't really thought about his final destination until that point...He had just sort of woke up with Sean in bed next to him, freaked out, and left as quickly as possible.  "I'm not in trouble am I? What're you going to do?" Gabriel said, getting a little nervous.

"Why don't you sit down, and we'll figure it out." The old man said, and scoot over making enough room on the bench for Gabriel. Gabriel sat down next to him, expecting the worst. The old man smiled. "Now, unless you live in the garbage dump, I'd suspect that you don't have a clue where you are."

"Oh...yeah" Gabe laughed a little. "I'm new to Fairvalley...I don't really know my way around yet."

"Okay, sure. How long have you lived here?"
"We moved in about two weeks ago I think"
"Hmm..." the man thought. "You must be the Brenner boy. I'm Dr. Hamilton." He said, offering his hand.
Gabe shook it, kind of awkwardly. "I'm Gabe. So uhh...How can I get to Valleyview Drive from here?" He asked.
"Wow, you are lost. That's all the way across town. " Dr. Hamilton said. "Why don't I walk you home?"
"No, if you just tell me how to get there, I'm sure I'll..."
"No, I think I had better walk you home, son. If the patrollers catch you out past curfew, you're parents will have to pay a big fine."
Gabriel thought about it. He knew there were patrollers who would catch him, and he really didn't want to explain why he was out, not at Sean's. "Okay, fine. Thank you" he finally said, and the two got up and began walking.

For an old man, Dr. Hamilton had a surprisingly quick pace, but after a block or two Gabriel eased into the rhythm of the old man's steps. "If you don't mind my asking, why were you out so late?" the doctor asked after a few blocks.
"Oh...I uhh... I had to leave a compromising situation." Gabriel said, proud of his vague answer.
"With a girl?"
"Yeah..." something like that he thought.
"I remember when I used to sneak out to see my girl..." Dr. Hamilton said, reminiscing in the memory of many, many years ago. "You know what I did one of those nights?" He asked, looking at Gabe.
"Uhh...no. What did you do?" Gabriel said, his mind only barely involved in the conversation.
"I married her. I had just finished medical school, and I had just enough cash for this grody, run-down apartment on the south side of Chicago. Eventually I earned enough money, and we moved to California and I started a cancer clinic there. I miss those days..." He said, getting a little more dreamy-eyed then Gabriel was comfortable with.
"What happened?" He said, hoping to dampen the mood a little.
"Well, I was having some....problems....at work. I didn't know what to do, so I ran away here. She thought I had died, so she killed herself. I sent her a letter explaining I wasn't dead, and I would come back soon, but it didn't arrive in time."
"Wow..I'm sorry to hear that." He said, the mood a little damper than he had hoped.
"That's your house there isn't it?" The man said, pointing at the small ranch where Gabe lived.
"Yeah..." he said, having just realized that they'd arrived at their destination. "Thanks for walkin' me home. I'll see you around"
"No problem at all." He said, and began walking back. "You remember to keep your priorities straight, son." He said as he walked away.
Confused by that comment, Gabe walked down to the playground and slept in the little hut with the padded floor. His parents expected him to be at Seans, so he couldn't go home.

Dr. Hamilton arrived back at his house, and pulled out an old copy of the Modesto Bee from his desk, dated March 20, 1960. The headline read "Ms. Regina Hamilton commits suicide after husband's death". Dr. Hamilton glanced over the age-old article, and thought about his late wife, and what he had said at the bottom of his letter. Had he meant it?
