Title: Character portraits
Post by: short2cake on October 04, 2008, 11:29:56 am
Is there any way to stop the portrait/icon/thumbnail (whatever the proper name is) from changing every 2 seconds?

It's not so bad if you have a few sims but when the house is full it lags a bit with all that changing going on.

Also, the lag when someone goes to call someone is crazy...especially if your sim knows a lot of other sims...while the phonebook updates all those thumbnails.

ETA:  All eps and sps.

Yes, it does annoy the hell out of me too with the portrait changing in AL. I have a temporary mod in place to at least stop it but the process to make it was pretty painful and long. One of us will definitely look into this and see what we can come up with.

Ok, thanks Chaavik.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.:D

I haven't noticed this problem can one of you post a screenshot of the problem?

The character portraits in the main Sim UI panel change constantly when a Sim is changing after a shower/bath, going out or in from the outside, changing clothes and God knows what else.

I can give you a screenshot to show you what I have done to disable the issue somewhat, but it is a long process. I missed one pose and don't know the name of that pose to replace with.

EDIT:

Here's one showing the Sim facing forward with her arms out to the side, but it is that pose I missed but not bad compared to other poses. There are 8 poses the game cycle through for each time a Sim change their clothes, outerwear and so on.

**Vampires are also affected by the stupid UI portrait changing constantly. There is a pose for this particular vampire using an identical pose to the one of my elderly woman.

Here's the other one showing the Sim in a pose I replaced with for all 8 poses I could find.

Heh, I edited the post after you did. Look at what I have up there, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The game still attempts to cycle, but with all 8 poses replaced with one pose, it will "remain" the same more or less.

I thought it was a new feature in AL :/ *scratches head*

A feature I didn't want, and I'm sure others didn't want.

Is it fixable?

Good question I will let you know if I can figure out the problem.

Does it update if you change clothes and/or change appearance in the mirror or will they still have the old clothes/hair/makeup on?

Yes, the portrait gets updated when the Sim's appearance/clothes gets changed, but the game will not use any of the poses except the one I use as a replacement and one other pose I could not find (Don't know the name of the one showing the Sim facing forward with their arms up and straight from their sides.

Ok.  Of course I have no idea how any of that works so I thought I'd ask.

I've only seen that pose once.  I used the agesims cheat to age a zombie down (way back when Uni came out) to child to see if they would retain the zombie skintone when aged back up.  When I aged them back up they had that crucified pose...freaky.

The pose is freaky but it is at least acceptable for me so I don't have to see the game switching the poses on me every time the Sim changes clothes or wear their bathing trunks or outerwear.

But still.. the game is trying to switch poses.. Not much with just two poses.

It's not so much the poses I mind, they change again so soon you don't have to look at any one in particular for that long anyway.  It's the lag.
I have a sims that know a lot of other folks and whenever I go to the relationship panel or use the phone book, the lag from it having to update all those thumbnails is ridiculous.

I don't even know why EA would include something like that.  It's not like people were begging for a "feature" like this.  But leave it to EA to not fix what's broken and add stuff that's ignorant.

Agreed 100%. This was something many of us DID NOT want. And to see that this issue wasn't addressed in the patch notes is indicating that they don't give a rat's arse about us and what we want.

At least the temp mod I have in place will keep me happy until they get around to fixing it 10 years later.

Dizzy's come up with a solution, found here - be warned though, from what he says it's not fixable in packages; he had to fix the .exe itself. You'll need to read through the thread for instructions and support.

I wouldn't use a modified .exe myself.

After I read the thread you posted about the "possible" fix to the issue with the UI portraits changing constantly in AL, I have some doubts. He hinted that these .exe hacks are for the no-cd cracked version of Sims 2. That was my general impression.

He did not say if the .exe hacks apply to the digital EP or not. Because I downloaded AL digitally.

I would say be very careful and read the instructions thoroughly before applying something that directly modifies the game code in that manner.

I will ask in that thread about these .exe hacks and find out if they can be used for the digital version of Sims 2 with no cracked cd hack.

EDIT:

I decided not to try one of those .exe hacks because I don't want to ruin my game files and whatnot after doing hard work setting up the game the way I want it to run. Right now, my mod is doing the same job reasonably well and is safer to use in the Downloads folder. Once I find that one anim pose to replace with, then the mod is considered tested and done. If anyone wants to use this alternative safely, please do let us know.

I am locking this thread that fix is for nocd hacks which you can't post on this site :)
