Title: Personalities

Do the personalities actually mean anything? and why do all my kids in a family have exactly the same personality?

sounds like you have the 'first born effect'

Every time you load the game, enter CAS and randomize sims, don't save any of them, just hit the randomize button a random number of times. then exit back to your neighborhood and play.

or download Pecados Lot Debugger from MATY (if you don't already have it) and it has a randomize sims feature that will do the same thing.

and yes, personalities do mean something.

Well.

Sloppy<-> neat. The less neat-points a sim has, s/he will rarely to never take the dishes after eating, don't mind mess that much, and will tolerate to live amongst more junk and garbage. A sim with more neat-points, will be more tidy, will take the dishes and pick up garbage by themselves (if you have free will turned on, that is) and their enviroment will be much lower if it's messy around them, then the enviromentbar of a less neat sim.

Shy<-> outgoing A shy sim will not crave contact with other sims as much,  and will react to interactions in a different way than an outgoing sim will. If an outgoing sim that is friends with a shy sim try to hug the shy sim, s/he might not accept the hug. It's harder to build relations to shy sims, or so have I experienced anyways. An outgoing sim's social-bar will drop much faster than a shy sims social bar.

Lazy<-> active. A lazy sim will need more sleep and to sleep and rest more often, than an active sim. They get tired more easaliy and take longer to rebuild their energy.

Serious <-> playful. A serious sim will be, of course, more serious. They don't like fun and games that much, and will prefer books and conversations instead of games. A playful sims fun-bar will drop much faster than a serious sims' fun bar. They will also wish to do more fun things, like win a game over someone and so on.

Mean <-> nice. Nice sims are much easier to build relations and get along with. Mean sims will react to social interactions in different ways than nice sims.

Think that's it.
