I was one of those outcasts (true story). I was shy, quiet--different; and different for the popular classes of schoolmates, means a prime target for spiteful rumors. Instead of sharing in these rumors, why not find out about people? You'll lose popularity among those upper class peers, but you may gain a friend. That's why in RL, I have so many friends--I chose to get to know those who were a little odd.
