Title: Every Family Has Its Secrets
Post by: Astral Faery on January 31, 2009, 03:19:58 pm
Now published on my blog...

Victoria's family had everything money could buy...except happiness

Chapter 1 - Fall's Loneliness (http://efhis.blogspot.com/2009/01/chapter-1-falls-lonliness.html)

After the birth of her baby brother, Victoria's family falls apart.  Join her as she struggles through childhood, wondering how her life changed so dramatically.

This will be published on my blog, and I'll post updates here.  I have waaay too many photobucket accounts, for one thing, it's hard for me to maintain stories both here and my blog, AND, this story will have adult content later on and I don't want to have to edit it.  I do hope you'll join me there and read it.  It's just a click away.  And if you'd like to comment, you can either do it here or on my blog.

Hope to see you there!!

Gorgeous...as always...but does this mean you are quitting Weekend Warriors? :O Have not seen an update on that for...EONS

But the story is still wonderful.

Great start :)

poor Victoria! If that had been my dad, He'd felt really sorry for himself when I was done yelling at him

lol, no Zorom.  The Weekend Warriors will be back.  I was planning on taking a long break after I finished Piles of Bones to work on some other things.  I've already started writing the next adventure, though, so it's coming!

theraven - thanks!  I'm thrilled you like it!

I was hoping I wouldn't put everyone off by publishing my stories on my blog rather than here.  But life is crazy and I just don't have the time for both.

That's fine, Astral. I mean, it's only one more click to get to a blog instead, since you kindly used a blog that you don't have to register to read the dammed story(which I find SO annoying) Ahem, sorry. Got a bt off-topic there.
You say life is crazy, and you still have time to manage three stories? Woah. Still, BLD is nearly over now.
Poor Victoria! And ***** Erik! Aargh!

Oy - four stories if you count my Avalon legacy, 3 kids, 2 babysitting kids, 4 cats, plus multitudes of stories that I need to read - but thankfully BLD is nearly done so I forged ahead with this one.  I actually started working on this before I even started BLD, but pushed it aside.  So it's been calling me back pretty hard, lol.  I'm happy you don't mind the extra click.  I hope others feel the same way. :)

Well, this is an Astral Faery story so of COURSE I'm going to read it!
Victoria is beautiful, well all the characters are.
And it is brilliant, the writing is very emphatic, I wanted to cry when Erik smashed her dollhouse! How could he do that?! Just when Bradley was making progress. Stupid chauvanistic Erik. >:[

And no, I don't mind the extra click. ^_^

Thanks, disco!  I'm so glad you read and enjoyed it.  This will hopefully be a little easier to shoot than BLD since it's a real life story instead of a fantasy!  I'm really glad you checked it out.  Erik is, pure and simple, a big jerk.  He can't handle the fact that his family is changing and he has no control over it.  He can't deal with a child with special needs.  Not in his family.  That kind of thing never happens to the VanDorens - always the poor family in some other town.  And sadly, he gets much, much worse!

ghetto - thank you!  Both for taking the time to read and to comment.  I really appreciate it.  I'm a little braver starting a new story than I was last year, but there is always some uncertainty involved - wondering if people will accept it.  I'm happy you enjoyed it.

Oh my go. Child abuse. He's going to murder the baby! And abuse Victoria! Then her mom! And then Clinton! Her mom will commit suicide and And Victoria gets horrible bruises and...and...social worker comes, Yay!
Ahem. Sorry. School tommorow. Don't like school. Argh.
Sorry, four stories then! But that reminds me, you haven't updated on the legacy either...  >:D

Ok, I'm only still in like the first chapter, but I have to say that i like this, it's written really well and is very interesting.... and special needs kids are always a big hand full, one of my brothers has autism, and I remember what it was like to baby sit him.... he likes pain, likes to stiffen up his whole body while watching TV, and likes playing with his blood when he hurts himself, but he could read my mom's college level chemistry text book. Now, he's basically a kid, and the most annoy/odd/different thing about him is that he can't re-learn anything, like something as simple as learning to write neater isn't possible for him because they said it was ok to write big sloppy letters when they started teaching him, and the fact that he doesn't like to eat or go to the bathroom, as he thinks they're both pointless.

Anyway, random tangent aside, very interesting story, can't wait to see where it goes, cuz i think it has me hooked, it's nicely wirtten and the pictures are good, and I read/am reading the Between the Light and the Darknes, and I so wanna see how it ends, because I like it. anyway, good job, keep it up 4thumb 3thumb

Well thank you, Demon!  I very much appreciate the compliments for both stories.  It's truly an awesome feeling when people compliment my work.  It just pushes me to do more.

Our RL family, too, is touched by autism.  My youngest son was officially diagnosed just last month, though we had our suspicions long before that.  He has a lot of sensory issues, as well, and much of Bradley is based on my youngest son.  He is a treat and a trial all wrapped up in one.  I am extremely fortunate, though, that he does not like being hurt or is fascinated by blood - that must be an incredibly difficult situation to deal with - because no matter how many times you tell him it's dangerous, I'm sure it just doesn't compute.

My son is high functioning, can read several grade levels above where his age, but has a meltdown if he's not the one to put the laundry detergent in the washing machine - among many, many other of his rigid routines.  He eats about 10 different foods total - and will actually throw up if he doesn't like the smells of what I'm cooking.  He has trouble communicating sometimes, or he's chattering nonstop.  And Oh Lord the high pitched noises.  Screaming, squealing, screeching - I'm developing a serious aspirin problem because he manages to hit this horrendously high pitched sound that only dogs should be able to hear - except we can all hear them.  And sometimes he does it all. day.  long.  1headwall

Thanks very much for reading and commenting!!

Oh no problem on the commenting, i've become highly talkative of late, and I read like whole light/dark thing, and liked, so I figured i should say somethin..... I'm just waiting for updates for both I guess.

I don't know what level of funtioning my bother is to be honest, because he was dignosed with it when I was in like elementary school or middle school, and now I'm in college and he's in elementary school. He had problems learning to talk for the longest time, the therapist actually taught him (and we had to learn some too in order to understand him) some basic sign language to help everyone. Not like the sintax of the langauge or anything like that, just a few words, like I still remember things like I/me, want, cookie, drink, yes, no, boy.... even though I don't really use it hardly at all anymore. I don't think he had sensory issues with foods, he just sees eating as pointless, so getting him to eat was always hard, still is, but he has sensory issues with lots of stuff. And the public school taught him to cry, so after that he cried about so many things, basically anything he didn't like. He used to fallow rules and liked to learn and was very very honest with people. Now he doesn't like to learn new things and has figured out that causing a scene he gets his way. I would just be careful about what teachers and stuff you let your son have, because if you don't handle special needs kids the right way, it can only make things worse.

I guess my point of view on it is a little different, being a sister not a mom, but I still had to baby sit him a lot, being the oldest in the family, since dad works a lot to keep the roof over our heads, and my mom was in college and working most of the time I was in high school.

but yeah, I wish you the best in parenting, and I can't wait to see what happens to Bradly and his sister in that house so I'll be waiting for updates for either story whenever you can update them :)  2hug oh and i'm not bothered by the actually story itself being in a blog, like someone else said, it's only one more click, and guests can read it, so it's all good. Are you going to post about updates in here or just add them to your blog? it doesn't really matter to me, I just wanna know where to check for updates.

Whether you're a sister or a mom, or anything else, having a special needs child in the family changes the dynamics of that family.  In real life and stories.  Some people cope better than others, and you'll see how poorly Victoria's family copes with it.  But the story is more about her than it is her brother.

You sound like a good big sister.  I know it can't be easy dealing with that.  I'm lucky my guy likes to eat - even though he only eats a few things.  And I agree that if they learn to manipulate the situation it makes it ten times tougher.  Because then you have to watch them to see if they're manipulating, or honestly struggling with something.

Luckily my muse is with me and I've been working pretty tirelessly on all of my projects as of late.  So updates won't take terribly long.  I am juggling four stories plus homelife, so it will take a little bit, but it's better than the last two months when I was burned out and didn't work on any of my projects.  I just uselessly existed, lol, and nothing got posted.  Thanks for all the reading!

Hi there :) Nice start so far, and I did wonder if you based Bradley on one of your sons. I feel for Victoria though, having to live in that atmosphere - and I can partly relate, with the fighting parents mostly. Dad did get nasty a few times too, but thankfully it wasn't that often.

Wow, another story!
A little more of a grim topic this time. I think you've captured the mood of this type of family very well, as I found myself getting pretty upset during some of it.
And when Erik smashed the dolls house, I wanted to smack him.  :-\

I've known at least one family with an autistic child, and he was quite a handful. Fortunately, his personality made the more wild demands a little more bearable.

Sadie - I'm glad it wasn't that often.  It's pretty scary for a kid when his/her parents argue.  Thanks for reading!  Working hard on chapter 2.

Egghugger - thank you!   ;D

steelguy - more grim than BLD?  :D  I didn't think I could do that, lol!  Anyway - glad I got your temper up, that's a good sign - means I'm doing my job. ;D  There will be more to come soon, as I've just been a complete workaholic on these stories lately!  Thank you very much for the compliments!

Great!  I read both chapters last night, and loved them.  Victoria is GORGEOUS!! Her plight, however, not so pretty.  The way you make Erik so perfectly hatable by everyone shows wonderful talent in you as a writer.  I really want to become a sim just so I can beat the crap out of the guy.  He'd certainly deserve it.  Anyway, SUPERB job so far!  I look forward to more chapters!

Now that is one messed up family.  :-\

I liked the bit in the club - tongue-tied and blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. Been there!  :D I think he took it well, though. At least he tried to follow up on her, so it may not be a total loss. But she still has her family... issues to deal with.

Great update, Astral! I didn't expect that Victoria would be a teen so soon! Haha.

*Joins the club of Erik haters* I'm still mad that he smashed her dollhouse in the first chapter!  1mad

Title: Re: Every Family Has Its Secrets
Post by: Astral Faery on February 14, 2009, 10:27:35 am
Thanks, steelguy!  Yes, a very dysfunctional family.  Glad you enjoyed it!

Aralie - LOL - yes that dollhouse smashing was a very monumental occasion in poor Victoria's life.

The first chapter was mainly an introduction to the family, their different personalities, and the struggles they were dealing with.  That's when the family started unraveling.  Most of it will take place from Vic's teens onward.  She'll be a teen for quite awhile, though, so no hard time jumps. ;)  Thanks for reading.

But this is just damn awesome really... SUPER amazing!

Thank you so much, Lady A!  I'm glad you found the time.  I sooo know what you mean about being far behind in your reading.  I've fallen behind in all of mine, as well.  Sometimes it's hard balancing reading, writing, taking pictures, and home life.  And you always have to follow your muse's lead.  Mine has been clobbering me over the head this week with this story, lol.  I spent nearly the whole day writing - when I wasn't chasing after or feeding a kid, that is!

Yeah i decided that the kids had a dad this weekend, you know.. like 'go away mom is at the computer' kinda weekend, i am not sure my husband appreciated this as much as i did :P

I'm glad you're writing this story, cause i think its really, really great, but then again, i already knew you were a good author. ^_^

oh it won't hurt him to interact with the kids anyway, it's good for them to see their dad taking care of them and such. Especially if any are boys. Maybe I'm just weird, but I think it doesn't hurt a guy/dad to be 'mr. mom' even if just for a little while.

and yay story.... *is still on the bookcase in the corner waiting for an update*

LOL!  Yep, can't blame ya there, Lady.  My kids well know what it means when Mommy's writing.  Means the get neglected, lol.  Just kidding.  But the older ones can fend for themselves a bit, and the five year old is getting easier to work around.  I have a couple of kid free hours on week mornings, now, so when I'm in the mood I write then.

Thank you so much for that compliment!  That really rocks my world!

Demon - thank you, and soon, I hope.  I've been writing like crazy on this, up to chapter 22, now.  I need to stop and go take the rest of my chapter 3 pics.  But when I get in writing mode it's hard to stop, and I kind of don't want to because it's awesome - I love it so much when the ideas just flow.  I'll try to get it done soon, though, because I'm eager to share.

I know exactly what you mean! I'm waaaay further on Xeno in MS Word than I am on here ;) I've got another project on the go too, which I need to take pics for x_x

It does get to me sometimes, but being single and childless has its merits ;) I won't be so lucky once Uni starts again though. But yeah - you always tell me to embrace my creativity when it flows, right? Make the most of it ;)

yeah i have a girl on 11, a boy on 4, a girl on 3 and a boy on 1½, so my poor hubby had his hands full, the little ones are not really old enough to fend for themselves, where as the oldest can just do whatever she wants (as long as she remembers her cell phone) hahaha.. i am actually sorta looking forward till they get a little older, if it was not for the fact that i would be older as well  :p

Title: Re: Every Family Has Its Secrets

Sadie - Definitely!  I think anyone's work is better when they listen to their muses rather than trying to fight them.  I've slowed down a little, and may go back and reread and flesh out.  I'll try to get the rest of my pics done soon so I can post chapter 3 - and I still have the pics to take for the final chapter of BLD.  Oy!

Lady - LOL, I bet Dad was quite busy.  But Mom needs writing time.  Lest our heads explode, lol.  And I had forgotten about the getting older myself part - drat!

Oh gosh, Erik gets worse??  1headwall
Really loving the story!  I didnt notice the walls down thing and I still cant find which pictures its in.  (Tho I did notice that at least you have ceilings in your pictures which is good!  Something like that would bother me to no end.)
Keep it up!!  Vickers is adorable!!!  3heart

Zorom - some of that may or may not happen.  Maybe a little, maybe a lot, maybe all, maybe none.  But I'm not sayin'!!  >:D

Demon - Erik is in denial.  He doesn't think things like that can happen to his perfect family.  But he's a 'tard.

Medagic - my dear friend, Zayury, fixed the shots for me - and I didn't even ask!  She fixed them and mailed them to me (after I had my little hissy fit, of course, lol) and I changed them.  I'm very grateful to her, and still stunned that I made that mistake.  And yes, unbelievably, Erik gets worse.  Quite a bit, actually.

Hi again Astral, I'm trying to make a story but I keep getting writers block. I tried a legacy first. I used like 150 pictures before they even got their job to the top. Then I tried to make a fantacy like you, but it kind of came out like a replica  ;D I know I sound like a total noob an all, but I was wondering how you get your ideas. There all so great, but I can't think of what to write about. I knew you'd be the one to ask because of you excellent ideas, I have just finished reading the first part to the showdown and may I ask, do you make those flashbacks first? or do you make identicals of the family.

Well, there is really no easy answer to this question.  I don't know where I got my ideas, they sort of just pop in my head.  Between the Light and the Darkness actually took me more than 12 years to write, because I got severe writer's block and couldn't figure out where to take it.  So I put it aside, and worked on other things.  I finally got an idea for it and was able to continue.

You can't force ideas.  And I bet you have more ideas than you give yourself credit for.  I read a lot, watch a lot of movies, and love to write.  But it's not always easy.  Sometimes my muse just isn't there, and no matter how I try to coax her out of hiding, I can't write.

My advice, if you're looking to write a sims story, is play the game.  It sounds too simple, but sims are pretty entertaining, and if you leave them to their own devices (turn on free will and watch them go), you can get some pretty interesting interactions.  You can try to turn that into a story.

Sometimes I don't know what I'm going to write.  I just sit down at the computer and open myself to ideas.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Here's a page that gives some ideas. Ideas for Writing (http://www.timesaversforteachers.com/index_page0010.htm)

Also, practice.  Practice, practice, practice.  ;D

Just to add my own two cents, since I also write:

Movies are a great source of inspiration, I've found. Although they tend to add more ideas to an existing story that I already had ideas for (During the span of Xeno I drew from flicks like American Beauty, even The Hulk to a degree). I certainly agree that you can't force ideas. If you want to write, your best bet is to watch real people or read women's magazines (that's another source I have), get ideas for real situations, then use your imagination to dramatise. Or if you're into fantasy read existing books or watch films.

Ugh, tell me about it! I started playing this legacy spin-off (rainbow challenge) just to get away from my own story, even writing in general 'cause I was suffering burn-out - therefore it began as a standard commentary. That lasted until about half-way through the second gen, before the heir became a character in his own right and developed a true personality, had real feelings, etc. Him and his kids. Now it's narrated from his point of view, with proper dialogue, musings and everything x_x I don't mind too much though, it's going down very well over at LiveJournal ;D

I tend to be the opposite - I'll get ideas when not at the computer, and start to wish I was in the position to grab a notepad (nine times out of ten I'm not, like walking down the street). Mind you, most of the time I remember what it was by the time I'm ready to write, and then it all just flows ;D

So it all depends on the person really. In answer to the last question, I can't speak for Ari but I'll be willing to bet clones were involved. It's a good idea to keep clones of sims around for just those kind of pictures, especially if it involves dead or younger versions of the characters.

Sorry I forgot to answer your other question, Beckey.  I ususally make a family of characters for each set, so there are many clones running around in the neighborhood - child, teen, and adult versions.  And thanks for the compliment, hon.  I appreciate it. ;)

LOOK!!  I finally have chapter 4 posted!  Can you believe it?  It only took me a whole month.

In Spring's Warming Kisses (http://efhis.blogspot.com/2009/04/chapter-4-springs-warming-kisses.html), Victoria manages to escape the tedium of her daily life and go out for some fun.  How will she get along with Shane?

2B - Thanks!  So happy you enjoyed it.  Thank you for your compliments on the mall and diner.  I'm not a builder/decorator.  I usually download everything.  But this time I did it myself, and like the way they turned out.  Nathan is indeed suspicious.  And he'll be even more so in the next chapter.  Thanks for reading!

OHH - thank you!  You can guess all you want - and by all means, keep throwing those ideas out there because I love to hear them - but my lips are sealed!  Thanks for reading!
