Sam, is my best friend, and my boyfriend.

Sam and I decided to take the kids for a walk, and that was when we fell in love.

we walked down a little lways from our house, and Sean insisted that he push.

suddenly, Sam walked up beside me, and reached out for my hand.

I looked up at him and smiled.
                           

Sam and I snuck out later that night.

"Kacey?" Sam asked
"What?" I asked back.
"I was just thinking. Do you remember my mom?"
"Yes, I sure do, she was great, what about her?"

"Can we go see her? I want her to see the love of my life, and how she has grown up so beautifully."

We went to the cemetary where Sam's mom had been barried over ten years ago.

We sat together right there on her grave, and then he said it.
"I love you."

When I got home that night I stood for a long time out there on the porch. I knew what I, we, had done had been wrong, very, very, wrong.

Then I started to remember how happy I had been, and how happy Sam had been, and I started to feel a lot better.

Sam came back over around four to say he couldn't get in his house, as usual. I told him he could stay on the porch if he wanted, and he started cracking up, he must have been really drunk.

The next few days I puked almost instantly when I woke up, so, that night I called Sam, and asked him to come over.

I told him my worries, and the fear I had that I might be expecting a baby.
"Really, Sam, I think I might be."
"You can't be. I mean, you just can't"

A little over a month later we found out I was expecting a baby, a little boy. I had committed to no smoking or drinking since the moment I found out, and had been encouraging Sam to do so too.

But, on that particular night I caught him outside, smoking, on the front porch.

"Sam," No response. "Sam, please," I walked closer. "That isn't good for you, or the baby." I reminded him.

His eyes looked distant, as if he had no intention of hearing what I had to say.

I walked in front of his eyes, and he shifted his gaze, lifting the cigarette up to smoke.

I rested my back on the wall next to him, and he walked away, toward the end of the porch.

I looked down, feeling as though I might cry, and right then, I almost did.  Sam put out his cigarette, and walked over to me, there was obvious pain in his eyes. He was sorry, I just knew it.
" I'm so sorry Kacey, but, I can't help it. I started doing it when I was little, since I never had a mom, and well..."
"I get it, I used to do that too, but, it's just that, this is our baby, our son, and I don't want to hurt him, you know?"
"I know, you just love him."

The day Chase was born had to be the greatest day of my life, and of Sam's.

He was such an adorable little baby, he had the same beautiful blue eyes as his daddy.

After he woke up the day we brought him home, it was nice out, so we brought him outside, onto the porch, and let the whole neighborhood meet him.

So my name is Chase Kadence, and I am six years old.

My sisters, Rosie, Belle, and Izzy are five, three, and one.

Last week I fell out of the big tree in the backyard, that's why I have two broken arms. I also have one cracked rib, but you cant see that when I have a shirt on.

"Hello?" I said into the phone
"Hi. Chase?"
"Dad?"
"I miss you buddy." he told me.
"Daddy when you coming home?"
he coughed, then paused.

"I'm already there. I'm the sunshine in your hair, so don't forget that Chase, just keep me in your prayers, okay? I love you buddy, and, I'm already there."
I stood silent listening.

"I'm with you too daddy. I'm your sunshine too!" I laughed.

Mom walked in. "Chase, Is that your dad?"
"Yep," she took the phone from me.
"When are you coming home?" She asked him.
"He's already here!" I told her, walking away, but she didn't hear me.

Later that night, I sat on the edge of my bed, in just my rib brace and a pair of pants.

"Chase" Mom said "Are you all right? Does your back hurt?"
"Nah, It's not so bad."

"Are you sure? Your doctor's appointment is tomorrow,"
"I know, It's on the calendar."
"Yes, it is, well, Just remember, You have to wake up early, so get some sleep okay?"

"Goodnight, love you, see you in the morning when the sun comes up," She told me.
"Night love you."

I woke up at two AM. I had been having a dream, well, a nightmare really, in which my dad had died. I walked out into the hallway, and I didn't feel good at all.

When I woke up that morning I found myself lying in a hospital bed.

Just then a doctor walked in. "Are you okay Chase?" He asked
"Yah, but why am I here?"
"Because  you blacked out, and became unconscious."
"H-h-how?"
"Were not quite sure. Were looking into that right now."

Then I noticed my mother, in her uniform, had walked in. "Hi Chase."
"H-hi,"
"Rosie has been wanting to see you,"
"really?"
"Yah, here, I'll go get her."

She walked down the hall and then back again with Rosie and Belle.

"Chase sick?" Belle asked.
"Yah, Chase sick," I told her "Very sick."
Rosie looked worried.
"Chase are you gonna be otay?"
"Yah, I'll be okay Rosie."

She smiled.
She sat on the bed and we talked for a long time.
Belle fell asleep and was lying in the stroller along with little Izzy.

That day they did a few tests, first they gave me an MRI, I got to wear video goggles and the made me sit still.

Then they took a couple x-rays

I was then taken into another room where they did some more tests.

and then they pulled out a large needle. Again my stomach did a back flip and I fell backward onto the cold hard table.

I'M ALREADY THERE
CHAPTER Two: SUNSHINE

After a while it seemed like I was doing okay, I hadn't blacked out in a while, so, they had let me go home. It felt good to be home, and with Belle starting school this year I wanted to be there with her.

Mom took us back home and we sat down at the table.
"Here, watch this"
She set the laptop down on the table, and opened up the screen. There, right before our eyes was our dad.
Dad, Daddy and Dada were the only things you could hear jut then, but, I wasn't listening.

"Hi guys, hi, yeah I missed you too." he told us "Chase? Are you doing okay?"
"Yeah dad I'm fine." I reminded him, I was tired of saying that, he knew I wouldn't be okay until he got back home.

"Good, that's good. I'm glad your okay bud."
"Daddy Daddy guess what?" Belle exclaimed "I'm going to Kinnegarten!"
"I know Belle! Wont that be fun?"
"Yah. It will." she said, yawning.
"Nap time" mom said, scooping up Belle.

She took Belle into her room and brought out sleeping Izzy, just to show dad. Dad smiled almost instantly, and Izzy was smiling in her sleep.
"Night Izzy" he whispered.
"okay come on Rosie, it's time for bed"
they left the room.

"Daddy when are you coming home?"
"Remember Chase, I'm already there take a look around I'm the sunshine in your hair, I'm the shadow on the ground, I'm already there, Chase, I am."
"I forgot, you are here, and I'm your Sunshine and your shadow too!" I told him.

That night I actually got some sleep, and the next morning I sat in bed, awake for a long time, in the sun, just looking at my shadow. Whenever I waved, he waved back.


I went down stairs and mom was just getting Izzy out of Bed. Rosie was watching TV, and Belle was still asleep in the bedroom.

I sat down with Rosie and tried to steal the remote from her, and then changed the channel from some Barbie show or something, to Caillou, even though it was a little kids show it had always been my favorite.

Izzy toddled into the room and came to sit on my lap, this was her favorite show, too.
"Izzy sit Izzy sit" she told me.
"Come here Izzy" I said, and pulled onto my lap.
...
School was starting in just one month, and I had spent the whole summer inside for 'Observations' again in the hospital.

So that day we went swimming, we jumped on the trampoline, we shot hoops, we played soccer, we climbed trees , and we drew with chalk. We also taught Izzy how to use a little tricycle.

When we went swimming I learned how to do a front flip into the pool, and my mom said it took dad three more years than that to do one, and I was only 9.

We were on the trampoline jumping, me Rosie and Belle, while mom watched and played with Izzy in her little splash pool.

Then Rosie, Belle and I ran into the front yard and played basketball, and three square using the four square thing we had built, and then mom came out while Izzy was taking a nap and played four square with us.

She even let me teach Rosie how to climb a tree, which was really funny because she wasn't tall enough and had to stand on an apple crate.

we drew with chalk and made a hopscotch to play on, and played with that until Izzy got bored and toddled away from us, we followed her and she wanted to go in her little splash pool, she was allowed to use the normal pool, but she seemed to like the little one better just because it was warmer.

"Izzy swim" she told us. So mom let her swim in her pool.
While Izzy was 'swimming' Belle went back on the trampoline and Rosie and I went to play soccer.

I got to be the goalie, and I missed almost every shot. The first one I blocked nailed me right in the head so hard I had to sit down for a couple minutes, I felt dizzy, but within minutes I felt better. I got back up and we were playing again, and Rosie felt bad so she kept on kicking it too soft, it wouldn't even make it come near the goal.
I told her to kick harder, so she did, and we were doing okay until she nailed me clean in the gut. I collapsed immediately, gasping for air and finally I just threw up.
I could see blood in the puke, and Rosie ran to get mom, and I just lay there, waiting.

 Everything around me started to spin, and again, I fell from how I was propped up on my arms down flat onto the ground.

I woke just moments later, but my mom was already hanging up the phone, and I knew the ambulance was coming.
I didn't want to go with them, not this time, so I tried standing up. I got up on my feet and my stomach gave a lurch, jerking my whole body backward and onto the ground, my feet slipping out from under me.
The worst part about the whole thing, was that Rosie stood there watching.

Chapter One: Reality

     I sped up the stairs with all my might, as fast as I could. Faster. I felt my feet slipping beneath me, and everything started spinning. It went black, and I couldn’t see a thing. All I knew was that it hurt. What hurt? Everything, everywhere.

      I opened my eyes. Where was I?

      “Hi Chase, I’m a nurse, my name is Blair, I’ve been taking care of you with the help of some nice doctors since you fell last night. You’re very sick, and you got hurt very badly, but I’m going to help you get better.” A woman told me. I couldn’t tell who she was, I’d never seen her before. “I know you can’t talk, and its hard to move your body, but if you can hear me blink twice.” I did as I was told.

      “You are in isolation, Chase.” She added. “Do you know what that means?”
      I stared into her eyes. I wish I could see more than that. I knew she had dark hair, but that was all I knew.

      “It means that everyone who comes to see you has to wear special masks and clothes so that they don’t get sick. Your mommy isn’t allowed to see you right now because the baby could get very sick, but your dad is on his way here to see you.”
      This was comforting, and as much as I wanted to here more, I was exhausted, and I let myself fall back asleep. It would have to wait for morning.

      I woke up again, this time feeling less exhausted.

      The same nurse with dark hair was standing in the far corner, jotting something down. I waited for her to turn and see me. “Oh,” She gasped. I smiled at this.

      “Did you have a good rest?”
      “Yes,” I squeaked out.
      “Do you want to hear more about why you are here?”
      “Yes,” I said faintly, though loud enough she could hear.
      “Well, you are in isolation because you are very sick- you have a sickness called Meningitis, and that’s why you have a rash.” She explained. “Your sister Rosie has it as well, and so does Belle.”
       I nodded, speaking took a lot with a mask on my face.

      “Do you remember falling down the stairs, Chase?”
      Did I? I remembered slipping, and blackness. Faintly, I knew I must have fallen. I felt a pain surge through my body- a definite answer. “Yes.”
      “When you fell you broke your arm and your leg, as well as some ribs, and you hurt your neck. Your neck should be better pretty soon.” She began. “And because of meningitis, you have been having seizures. We put you in a medically induced coma so you can get better without hurting your brain, and now you’ve woken up.” She smiled.

      I nodded at this, it was good to hear. “What about my sisters?” I asked.
      “Rosie is in a coma from the meningitis, but she is doing as good as she can be. Belle is awake, she isn’t very sick at all, but she is very contagious so she needs to be in the hospital- we want to make sure she doesn’t get any sicker.”
      “Can I go see her?” I asked, hope glimmering in my eyes.
      “I’m afraid not, buddy. You’re all in isolation because anyone who goes near you without masks and gowns can get very sick, and if we let you go around the hospital that wouldn’t be very good. Don’t worry, you’ll be feeling better much soon. Look, your rash is starting to fade.”

      The next few days passed slowly, time weaving itself in and out as I sat, confined to a bed. I spent most of my time talking to nurse Blair, and occasionally waving to my mother through the window.

      “Rosie is getting worse, but I have no doubt she will pull through it, buddy.” Nurse Blair told me. She updated me all the time on my sisters, I was glad to know about them.

      Belle was just as awake as ever, still pressing through the sickness as she had from the start.

      It went on the same every day, until one day, a man walked in. I ignored him, assuming he was a nurse or nursing assistant, maybe even a doctor.

      “Hey Chase,” The man said, sitting down. I knew instantly whose voice it was.

      “Hey, how are you?” He asked.
      “I’m okay,” I mumble.
      “Heard you wiped out a little, huh?”
      “Yeah.”
      “You’re a little busted up, though, huh?”
      “Yeah. My arm is broken, and my leg. I had a neck brace, too, but they took it off.” I explained. “Oh, and my ribs are broken.” I smile.
      “Did it hurt?”
      “I don’t remember it.” I mumble.
      “Well, I hope you feel better, I have to go see Belle and Rosie. I’ll be back later, okay?”
      “Okay.”
      He hugs me good-bye, its been months since I have seen him.
      “I love you buddy.”

      It was weird not seeing him-he’d been in Afghanistan for the previous five months. As long as I could remember, that’s the longest he’d been gone. I missed him.
