Title: Nightlife garage and tutorial
Post by: steveuk on September 14, 2005, 07:43:37 am
Hi everyone

My copy of Nightlife arrived today.  I saw on MTS2 that some people were having problems placing a garage so my advice would be to place the drive first before building your house.  I have attached a few screenshots to show you the garage position on a 2x2 lot.

as long as the driveway is not touching anything it will place.  you can add everything after.  i worked it out after many hours.  the extension must join the end of the driveway and if you want a garage you have to build a wall betweent the extention and the driveway. then add the door.  it will work. eventually.

I normally place the door first but I guess both ways work.  Have you been able to place a drive on the right hand side of the lot?  The few lots I have been adding a drive too only let you put it on the left side.  I think this is because there is a run up and turn area.  It looks like you will have to place any right sided drives quite away from the edge of the lot which means losing a fair amount of space.

Reposting since I still need help after reading something else about the cars lol.

I finally got my garage built, after a few minutes of getting mad lol, but now I cant find the downloaded car from maxis and I've started my game a couple times now since installing it like it said to do so my question for those who have downloaded this car from Sim2Kid405 on this board, where exactly do you find this new car? I looked at the cars in the game already and I dont see it there wit those ones from maxis. :?

EDIT: I found the downloaded car, it was in the MISC section in the buy mode.

Title: GRRRR GARAGES!!
Post by: CharleeRose on September 16, 2005, 08:09:49 am
I'm having an issue with building a garage that has me about to rip my hair out! Maybe one of you have some ideas since I can't seem to get my EA Support question to go through because their stupid support loggin screen isn't coming up for me.

Ok enough whinning. Here goes:

I'm trying to build an attached garage on a house with a basement and the game will not let me build walls right up to the foundation (at any angle... which doesn't make much sense to me if you don't have floor tiles placed) nor will it allow me to  build walls on a slope (as is expected).

Has anyone found a way to do this?  If so please have mercy on me, I won't ever get out of build mode if I don't figure this out.  And you don't have to tell me, I already know I'm too stuborn to live. lol

I found that you do not seem to be able to place foundations next to the garage driveway.  There maybe a way around this but for now if you want an intregal garage, I guess foundations are out.

Yeah it seems so, I've tried every way I can possibly think of (including keeping the actually driveway several spaces away from the foundation and attempting to connect walls in eveery way and it was a total no go. :(

I read on another board that according to a Maxoid, diveways cannot be placed while the move_objects on cheat is on.

I was working on an easy tutorial for building garages lower than terrain height for 'Nightlife' (see pic).
Looking around earlier I noticed that one or two already exist.  If you think my tutorial would be helpful to anyone, let me know and I'll try to finish it before my Holland trip.

The house is unfinished so please no comments on 'what a lousy builder'

Thanks for the link Maniac, unfortunately this technique will not work for a working 'Nightlife' garage. I have some bits to do but will try to post a quickie method    sometime later today.

Ok, here is the tutorial.  I tried posting it earlier but there were some resizing issues with the site so hopefully it will upload now.
This tutorial is in word as I completed it on my laptop....sorry but maybe some kind soul could convert to pdf, html etc
Any problems or questions then please reply to this thread or pm me.

UPDATE: I have added an HTML version for those without microsoft word.

Here are a couple of pictures showing a Georgian style? double fronted house which is not quite finished (in fact there is not many I do completely finish)  I have placed two garages this time.
If you use a sloping drive for your house, you should place the car/s inside the garage when you buy them. As I explained in my tutorial, there are no animations for vehicles to tranverse slopes so it looks kind of wierd when they turn in and reverse out.

There is also a way to build a garage on an upward slope. I do not see any benefit of doing this though and you cannot ajoin that sort of garage/drive to a house with foundations (at the moment).
I hope this thread helps the more inventive of you house builders out there.

Thanks Steve! I can't wait to give this a try... I just hope it will let me put that last bit of foundation between the garage wall and the starting foundation.... it has yet to work for me, but I'll try your way exactly and see. ::crosses fingers::

Thanks again!

If you try to extend the foundations thereby making them longer than the garage walls you will not be able to place them.  I have not tested the size difference yet as I was away but will do so and post the result here.  If you keep the foundation the same size as the garage wall you should have no problem. Good luck with that.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

UPDATE: I have tried some various combinations and it seems that you cannot extend the foundation next to the garage more than one square past the garage door.  This is not really a problem though as the next row of foundations can be extended as much as space allows.

Hi SimMoon

I just saw this post    Unfortunately the house your referring too was bulldozed by my daughter   but I have uploaded a couple of houses to this site, one which is similar and also one on TSR.

Thanks for the comments and if you need any help just pm me or post in the thread.

Please tell me that the wink is a metaphor for "like for sure you can use the moveobjects cheat" because l'il ole moi has been using it to place driveway extenders all over the Veronaville Horror where I could not place an actual driveway piece and in each instance my Simmies get in and drive their cars. They may not back out onto the street but they teleport to the road and then putter off. I found out that the cheat works when I was trying to see if I could rotate the drivaway to another angle. I saw a thread about doing this but I was Simchallenged and gave up when I saw that I could place the extender without the drive!

Okay, redundancy over!

Steve a bit too late but I have to tell you your houses are brilliant.

DOES ANY KNOW HOW TO BUILD A GARAGE IN THE CORNER SO THAT YOU CAN DRIVE IN FROM THE SIDE STREET THAT DOES NOT HAVE YOUR TRASHCAN AND MAILBOX.  NOT ALL HOMES HAVE FRONT DRIVEWAY ENTRANCE,

Hey steveuk, I was wondering:
a. Is it possible to build a basement to the house, same way as a garage?
b. Do Sims actualy know how to drive out of that leveled garage?
c. Can you place a car on the slope?

Thanks! :)

Well, looks like I had answered two questions by myself:
a. Yes, I managed to build a basement from ground floor, connecting with with stairs to 1st floor :B
c. Yes, but it's going to float :( (probably Maxis forgot about handbrake)
b. Haven't tryied that one yet...

Steveuk, your tutorial is great! I really appreciate that you`re sharing your knowledge with us. I built some houses with basement garage and now I think regular driveways suck LOL

To proof that I learned the lesson I add a pic of unfinished villa with triple garage :) Pic is not great as it was taken in the neighborhood, sorry for poor quality.
