Title: Question about extracting meshes
Post by: Dullahan on June 25, 2011, 01:16:25 pm
Okay, I am wanting to extract a Maxis object from a bookshelf that comes with Teen Style Stuff.
If I clone a base game object, and replace the GMDC with the extracted mesh, will the object require TSS or Base game?

Thanks in advance.

Usually if you clone basegame items the item will be basegame compatible. At least static objects like deco and such. But it depends on the EPs you have.

TSS won't influence the object, but FT and a few other EPs will influence the bookcase, since they have other books and different coding. Same goes with a refridgerator, stove and other objects that are influenced by EPs.

So to answer your question - TSS will not influence the object if you make sure all textures are included (book textures too) - but an EP might, if it's a bookcase you're planning to clone. Which ones do you have?

I have all EPs/SPs. I was planning on cloning the 12th China Dynasty vase from the base game.
But the mesh I am extracting is originally from the TSS surfer bookshelf.

To make things a bit clearer,

Deco objects aren't touched much by EPs (except the hobby enthusiasm in FT, but they will work without it). Slaved objects are another matter entirely, however.

If you have all EPs, I suggest you use the sculpture of a wooden man (the kind artists use for drawing poses) for small objects. That one will let you place it anywhere you want (including AL, OFB and BV shelves), and the preview icon will show correctly.

If you clone bigger objects like the vase (which I think requires the CEP and has some other annoying things about it), it can't be placed on certain shelves without some serious SPE action (I gave up figuring it out after failing several times). The preview will only show a tiny little blob.

Okay, so I will try the wooden man instead.
You are meaning the "Measure of a Sim wooden sculpture" right? Or a different one?

So they should work with base game, right?
Should I wait until MTS is back up, and try the any game starter to see?

That's the one :)

I made a hospital set recently, and first used another mesh for the little things. Ingame preview pics looked horrible... Then I got the issue about it not working for the shelves - and I tried out almost every single basegame object. Ended on the wooden man, which worked for everything.
And yes, it's basegame ;)

Little things that would irritate me greatly!  :D

So I will use the wooden man, and then test it.

Thanks for your help!

For small items only, mind you. Much bigger object clones will only be annoying if you use that object.

Haha, right.
I figured as much.
