Title: Tutorial - Custom Television Channel [Download]
Post by: Eric on June 01, 2005, 11:29:01 pm
Hi everyone,

I put together an example television channel and a simple tutorial on how to create and add your own custom television channels to the Sims 2...

Let's open the Custom Television Channel.package file in SimPE and begin with the "Object Data" file...

Next let's choose what we want our pie menu caption to say...

now let's change the text value from tvstation_insimenator to what you want your channel pointer to be called in the Broadcast.ini file....

now, we will add a new television station directory to our game and name it whatever we want it to be called... in this case I named it TvInsim

Now let's finish up and add our new channel to the Broadcast.ini file...

NOTE: If you try modifying the Broadcast.ini file in "My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Config", it will be overwritten to default configuration by the ini located in "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 University\TSData\Res\UserData\Config" and the custom channel will not work correctly.

NOTE 2: I am assuming that if you do not have university installed then you would need to modify the broadcast.ini file located in "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\UserData\Config".

EDIT: If you do not have University Expansion Pack installed then please read Post #22 (http://www.insimenator.net/viewtopic.php?p=13225#13225)

Now all you have to do is make your own .movie files (.avi files might work also?) and place them in your new channel directory... load your game up and have fun

NOTE:  place the .package file in your "My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Downloads" directory for it to work

hi eric. I like the fact that we can get new channels, but so far can we add the ability to raise skills while watching? Or do we have to wait for someone to find out how?

Man that sounds too easy...what file format does the avi's have to be in?  128x128 I think I heard someone say that once before..

Tim, honestly I do not think .avi files will work but I have not tried so I am unsure about anything beyond what is involved with the example channel itself

I copied existing maxis .movie files to my example custom channel directory and renamed them (for testing purposes of course), but I do not even know what software to use to actually make .movie files... someone else can hopefully post here concerning that lol

Hmmm..I thought they were avi's since that is the format they use when the game creates a movie file of what you tell it to...might be wrong though...time to explore!!

Downloaded AVI files I've put in my tv before were 128x128, but those were the only files that I had work for me and only at that size.

I have put an avi and didn't put it to that size and it showed up fine, but I may be lucky that it was probably that size but i wouldn't know i have to remember what i put it, but it did show up and i saw the whole picture on the screen.

It may be working. Try to put the file in the game and see what happens.

In the Object Data image, I made a mistake.  It is not necessary to click a yes or no after clicking Commit, the change is committed automatically.  I have corrected that error... my apologies.

Hi,

I quoted a couple of useful posts from my custom television thread on MTS2...

Hey there,
okay this is for all the people who got the same problem as me, with that blue flashing tv screen.
The only thing to solve this problem is to edit the broadcast.ini in your download directory, and not in your game directory.
Should work then... :-)
But i think this is only for Sims 2 and not for the Expansion Pack players.

greets,
t.styler

First of all thanks to Eric for the simple tutorial.

For all those pre-university struggling with the blue flashing screen, here is what I did to get it to work:
1. Modified the broadcast.ini files in both the installation and the download directory (hey, better safe than sorry). Initially this still didn't seem to work.
2. Then I created an empty station subfolder also in the game installation directory: ...EA Games/The Sims 2/TSData/Res/Movies/Broadcast. I had already created the station subfolder in the download folder structure. And this solved the problem for me.

Please note that I put my own movie files in the station folder in the download folder structure. The station subfolder in the installation directories remains empty.

It may be that step 1 is sufficient, because when I did step 2 I also double checked and redid step 1, just to ensure I did not make any typo's...

SimPE's website is currently down, I think. For now Just make up a temporary GUID.

This would be the text that you want the pie menu to say when you click on "Change Channel..." on a television.

Example:  Change Channel.../Animal Kingdom  ("Animal Kingdom" would be your new pie menu item)

I'm hoping I can get a little advice in my custom channel making effots.

I'm trying to make a custom channel with movies made from Sims 2 video captures. I'm taking the Sims 2 movies, editing them in Windows Movie Maker, conveted them to an AVI with... hm, I can't find the program name it was linked on MTS2 and shows up on my directory as Witcobber Super Video Converter... and then fix the settings in  Virtual Dub.

When I try to test it in the game, the movie works but it plays very slowly and looks much low-res than the movies that come with the game.

Does anyone have any advice to what I may be doing wrong? Thanks.

Does anyone know how to add new Movies? Those were introduced in FreeTime, I believe. The problem is that the Watch Movie... menu appears when the TV is off, and whatever custom options I add in the .package file do not appear there, they only appear when the TV is already on.
Would a new .package be required, and if so, could someone please provide it?

I've tried searching left and right, but came up empty. Since the default channel in the .package says "InSIMenator Broadcast Network", I figured this was the best place to ask, even though the thread is ancient.
