Title: Delphy's Download Organiser
Post by: brooke_82 on April 11, 2007, 07:29:06 pm
Ok so i dont know if this has been posted anywhere yet, if it has Im sorry but i just had to pop in and say that there is a new program that rocks my socks!!!

Delphy has made a new dowload organiser that you will have to see it believe!!! Its awesome, it weeds out all of your downloads that dont have a mesh, and any broken any broken downloads. It sorts all your downloads into categories and you can bulk highlight them and put them into sub folders so you dont have to do it one by one.

Try it out... Its unbelievable.

I got it a short while before I discovered this thread, and I agree - it is very nifty indeed. At last, I was able to get rid of a lot of useless crap.

Me thinks it's perfect in maintaing which is what and by whom. Doesnt take 5 mins or more to sort. Very innovative, well thought and worth having.

Awesome program, it's like the Clean Installer on steroids.  I was able to empty all my subfolders out and re-sort everything back into new subfolders in less than 30 minutes, with almost 3800 downloads.

Just right click and choose delete, but be careful because it does give false positives on occassion. Inteen F will show up as an orphan' don't delete that.

My orphan scan came up with over 700 files, so I created a new folder called "orphans", moved them all to that folder and then moved that folder to the desktop for now, while I run the game and see if anything I need comes up missing.

I’d be a bit careful with this utility, it really is n the development phase and a lot of the things that it was defining as orphans just weren’t, now it would be nice to off load some of what is in the downloads folder but it was all the clothes I like, default replacement skins and object recolor that I know are ok. There were 1200 orphans according to the utility, where to get to time to check all that, even if I understood want to look for. I had taken things out and now have put them back, I’d keep an eye on this utility but remember it is in the development phase and since the guy is doing it on his own time might never get fully finished.

I have a question about orphans. I did a scan and I can see some mesh files in the list of orphans. I thought an orphan was a recolor that didn't have a mesh. Is that wrong?

Rogue, an orphan is just what you said, a recolor without any mesh,  but it can also be a mesh with no recolors, which you'd never see ingame, because meshes don't show up in-game unless they have a recolor.  When you delete items in-game, you're actually removing the recolors, but leaving the mesh.  The orphan scanner does tend to pick up a few non-orphans, out of over 700 that it found for me, I did notice about 8 items that weren't actual orphans, so care is needed when using it.
Overall, it's a great utility.  The more I use it and learn about it, the more I like it.  I've noticed since this thread was started, Delphy has posted several newer versions, so it's still a work in progress.

The new version is great, it sends the files to the recycle bin, so in case you accidently remove something you need. I used the first version and just deleted all it found. Apparently it doesn't like any default replacements because it removed them all and now I don't have any Maxis swimwear for my men so all I get is a floating head and I am SOL. All that is left is little blue boxes and I can't find that file again. I also don't have a plantsim skin so I have to go and find another default replacement or have just a plantsim head. I fixed the swimsuit issue by downloading more swimwear for men, which keeps them from swimming as just a head. lol I should have checked them all but I didn't I went through about half then just deleted them all. Like Veash said you just have to watch what it wants to delete Delphy is still updating and improving on it. I just wish I had known if you use a default replacement then later decide you don't want it forget it or you won't have that part of the game. It doesn't just bring back the default, I would never have used any default replacements. Which is why I am SOL unless I want to loose everything uninstall, reinstall. Or that some default replacements can also keep you from using the patches to update the game.

I'm thinking that might be the infamous Maxis thumbnails bug.  You can try deleting the Thumbnails folder from mydocuments/eagames/thesims2, but be warned, this will slow down your game in CAS until the thumbnails are all refreshed.

this is going to sound alittle stupid, but can someone explain - subfolders, are they folders you place inside your download folder, and if so,  will the items place in the subfolders still show up in the game.

yes, Marn39 that's correct, subfolders are folders within another. If you have EPs from Nightlife onwards then you can subfolder your downloads to organise them better and yes, they will show up in your game

thankyou Aliwag, I think I will give Delphy's Download Organiser a try, I was alittle unsure as to how it would work, but think I have a better understanding now.

i have a question, could anyone upload this onto inSIMenator? My computer doesnt like the rar downloads from mts. and it works on here... ;/

Delphy would have to give permission for that, and I doubt he will.

The two boards are built using different software packages, which is why RARs seem to work a little better here.  MTS2 is also having ongoing problems with their downloads.

On either board, your best approach is to right click on the link and chose Save As.

sweetpea there are three other oprions for scanning your downloads:

The Sims™ 2 Content Manager - http://thesims2.ea.com/getcoolstuff/contentmanager.php (http://thesims2.ea.com/getcoolstuff/contentmanager.php)

Sims2Pack Clean Installer - http://sims2pack.modthesims2.com/ (http://sims2pack.modthesims2.com/)

SimPE - scan folder tool - http://sims.ambertation.de/ (http://sims.ambertation.de/)

all three of the alternatives have various strengths and weaknesses - I have found The Sims™ 2 Content Manager to be completely worthless since it provides no useful information in decision making.

I find that only by using combinations of DDO, S2PCI, and SimPE am I able to properly manage my downloaded content with any real precision.

Attention: No software currently available will inform you that a download requires an EP which you do not currently have installed!
