Ok so you all know me and I can't stay away for very long after I finish a story. I’m not really in the mood to add more to Kaylynn’s story yet so I’m going to start up the next one I have been thinking of. Just a warning that there are some adult subjects in this story (not too adult I’ll keep it as PG-13 as possible) and there may be the occasional swear word here and there. So you were warned. I hope you like it, and comments are always appreciated!!


Intro

The house was dark when Cassidy walked up the front walk. She knew she shouldn’t be getting in this late and dad wasn’t going to be very happy but she lost track of time and it’s not like she was doing anything wrong, just hanging out at the park with Tiffany, Robby, and Tyler. But in her father’s eyes it was wrong. He didn’t like her friends, he said they were too much into that Goth thing and he wasn’t going to have any daughter of his associate with the likes of them.

Cassidy put her key in the lock of the old weathered and tattered door. She didn’t even get it all the way in before the door opened in front of her and Mr. James stood there with his arms crossed and his face showing an expression that didn’t please Cassidy.

He grabbed her by the hair and pulled her into the house and then just like the house itself everything went dark.

The next morning Cassidy awoke to a throbbing pain in her head. She forced herself to get out of bed as soon as she saw it was already 11:00am. She knew her father would be in to wake her up to get on with her morning chores soon and she didn’t want any more confrontation.

She walked over to her dresser and pulled out her outfit for the day. She looked up and instantly saw the marks on her face that were left by her and her fathers squall last night. She knew her father would make her cover it up so she did the best she could to hide the marks of his abuse. She flinched in pain every time she touched her face.

5 minutes later her eye looked slightly better but her spirits were still down. It was Saturday and she was going to have to spend the majority of the daylight hours in the house cleaning and scrubbing down the toilet and what not. Sure enough her father barged in without even knocking on her door.
“Cassidy get you ass out here and make my lunch. After that you need to clean the kitchen and the bathroom after that I don’t care what you do.” He said in a loud harsh tone.
“Yes Sir” was all Cassidy was allowed to mumble. She knew if she protested having to wait on her fathers every needs she would just suffer the same fate as she had last night and one black eye was enough for her.

After 4 long hours of cleaning her house from top to bottom Cassidy was finally able to leave the house. Not that her father would have known the difference because he was already passed out in his favorite lazy boy chair. This was usually their weekend routine. She would clean and do everything for him while he drank enough to make him pass out for the night. That’s when Cassidy found her opportunity to get out of the house. Most of the time she didn’t even have somewhere to go she just liked to walk around the town and the park. She would sit on the swings and stare up at the sky as the sun set and the air grew colder. She would think about when her life used to be happy. A time before the accident, a time before she was left alone with that horrible man she was forced to call her father.

Chapter 2

10 years ago when Cassidy was 5 there was an accident. She was staying with her grandmother during the days while her mother worked. Cassidy’s parents were divorced shortly after she was born and at the age of 5 she never really knew her father. She knew her mother did all she could to keep her away from him.

The day of the accident had started like any normal day. Her mother got her ready early in the morning to go to her grandmothers where she would then take Cassidy to kindergarten while her mother worked until 5pm at the restaurant. Cassidy’s mom worked hard to keep food on the table for her family. During the ride to grandma’s house it had started to snow. It was a cold January morning and a snow storm had been threatening their town for the past few days.

Cassidy’s school was canceled that day because of the snow and her grandmother had talked to her mother a few times during the day asking her to leave work early before it got any worse. Cassidy’s mother refused and said if she didn’t stay she would lose her job and then they would end up homeless. Cassidy sat in the background playing with her toys listening to them argue. Her mother was very strong willed and pretty much did what she wanted.

The day went on like usual and Cassidy watched as the snow piled up outside. She wished her mother would come and get her so they could go out in it and play. Cassidy loved snow; winter was her favorite time of the year. Cassidy stood in front of that window for hours watching for her mothers beat up old car.

Her mother’s car never did show up that day. Instead a police car and a very nice police man came to the front door. They told Cassidy’s grandmother that there had been an accident on the highway while her mother was driving home. A semi truck had hit a patch of black ice and had no control of his rig. He hit Cassidy’s mother head on. She was flung from the car and was killed instantly. The police told her grandmother that Cassidy was to be taken to her father because he had more right to her than her grandmother did.

The police took Cassidy that night from her grandmother and from the world she knew and was happy in and shoved her into a world of hurt and pain. She never saw her grandmother again.

Monday morning Cassidy got herself up for school before the sun and even came up. She wanted to take her time getting ready and walking to school so she could have some time to herself. When she walked passed the living room on her way into the kitchen for breakfast she saw her father still passed out in his chair with the TV on some infomercial for a set of knives. She decided to leave the TV running in hopes that it would keep her father sleeping longer.

After her bowl of cereal and a quick freezing cold shower, (her father would have her throat if she used up any of the hot water before he got a shower) She hurried herself out of the house for the 20 minute walk to school. Most kids who lived around her were driven because you had to walk through a pretty bad part of the town but she didn’t even bother asking her dad to drive her.

She took a different rout than she usually does and walked by an apartment complex with some very older boys outside playing basket ball and didn’t stop as they all directed whistles and some crude words her way. She didn’t want to but for some reason she looked back over her shoulder and noticed one of them looking back at her not joining in on his friends so called fun. It wasn’t hard to tell she was younger than him but for some reason he just kept staring at her. She decided not to think much of it and just kept walking.

When Cassidy got to school her three best friends met up with her. When she turned around to look at them Tiffany just about lost it.
“That good for nothing father of yours beat the shit out of you again?” she asked.
Cassidy didn’t even have to answer they all knew it was true.
“I swear Cassidy just let me at him and I’ll teach him never to touch you again.” Robby said punching his fist into his hand.
“No guys I don’t want to make it worse and I really don’t want to see him hurt any of you.” Cassidy said trying not to cry.
She had never had very many friends and she didn’t want anything to happen to the only ones she had to begin with.

They went about their day as usual, classes and then lunch and then classes again. Most of the day Cassidy tried to hid her face with her hair but it was no use most of the kids saw it anyway and all whispered about her behind her back. A few of the teachers were whispering too. They were all used to her excuses about what had happened to her in the past so no one bothered to ask her again what had happened. To be honest Cassidy didn’t really know what she would say. She had used up just about every story she could have over the years. All she knew was she wanted this day to be over with.

She had made it through the day just fine until her 6th hour class, English. She was working hard on a story she was writing and never even paid attention when the PA system chimed into the room asking to see her in the guidance counselor’s office. She never would have known if it wasn’t for the fact that she could feel all eyes in the room staring at her. She walked down the very quiet and deserted hallway.

When she got to the counselor’s office she knocked on the door.
“Come in Cassidy.” A muffled female voice said from behind the door.
She walked in and looked around the very nicely decorated office. No doubt Mrs. Laing had some style. She was a younger woman, probably in her late 20’s. She had dark hair like Cassidy’s that she had pulled back into a bun of some sort. She had a much darker complexion than Cassidy did but they looked to have the same deep blue eyes. She could tell she liked Mrs. Laing.
“Take a seat Cassidy; I would like to talk to you if that’s ok?” Mrs. Laing asked.
Cassidy nodded and sat down in the chair next to Mrs. Laing’s desk.
“Cassidy could you maybe tell me where all of those cuts and bruises on your face came from?” She asked.
Cassidy tried to think of something good to say but she just couldn’t think of anything to use as an excuse for her fathers abuse.
“Cassidy I know this isn’t the first time something like this has happened and I want you to know what your father does to you is wrong and against the law. I cannot ignore the fact that he is beating you like this. One day it could all go very wrong and who knows what he could do you to. Do you understand what I’m saying?” Mrs. Laing asked.
Cassidy still couldn’t say anything she just looked down at her hands and picked at something on her jeans.
“Cassidy I have sent some police men over to your house to speak to your father, after they are done there they will be coming here to speak to you. I will not allow you to return to that house to get beat again.” Mrs. Laing said.
Something in Cassidy’s head snapped because as soon as she hear the word police she was furious.
“How dare you do that?” She demanded. “Do you have any idea what he will do to me when I DO get home? You have no clue, no clue at all.” Cassidy screamed.

She got up from the chair and darted out of the office. She didn’t stop once she was out of the school doors nor did she stop for some time. She didn’t care what they did to her father but she was not about to go back there now. She kept running and running and running and only stopped once she couldn’t run anymore.

Cassidy had run for what felt like hours. When she had to stop to catch her breath she noticed she was standing in front of that apartment building again. This time it looked deserted. There was no sign of any of the guys that were playing basketball earlier that morning. She decided to take a little break and get off her feet for a while. She noticed that the door to the apartment was just about ready to fall off of its hinges. From what she could see the place didn’t look like anyone had lived in it for quite some time.

The inside of the building was by far worse than the outside. The boys who used the basketball court must be the ones keeping the outside up because the inside was trashed. There were papers and boxes and trash all over the place. The walls looked green and moldy. She walked over to the stair case and walked up it carefully as to not step in any of the holes that had rotted through the wood. She walked through the dark and damp hallway looking at the doors to the apartments.

She stopped at one door in particular that stood out to her for some reason. The brass number 13 looked almost brand new and she could hear sounds coming from inside the apartment. She didn’t want to knock but she couldn’t believe that someone lived there. She thought to herself that maybe it was the landlord or the person who owned the building. She didn’t want to give away to anyone that she was there trespassing so she went up another floor to explore more.

The second floor looked just as run down as the first floor did. She was glad to discover that no one was living on this floor at all from the way it looked. She found an apartment that had its door slightly ajar and decided to look around. The inside smelled like a wet dog and the wallpaper and paint were pealing of the walls. There was a tattered old couch and some pretty old looking furniture. Whoever had lived here left in a hurry because there was rotten old food left out on the kitchen table. Cassidy explored more to find that the apartment had 2 bedrooms one looked to be furnished for a little boy probably not much older than 5 by the looks of the toys scattered on the floor. Cassidy went into the master bedroom and sat down on the bed. She knew she couldn’t stay here for long but she was just so tired. She pulled up her legs close to her chest and fell asleep on the dusty old bed.

She was awoken sometime that night by someone touching her. She jumped out of bed startled. Standing in front of her was that boy, the one who was staring at her in the basketball court that morning.
“Sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” He said
“Well you shouldn’t have been sneaking up on someone when they are sleeping then.” She said holding onto her chest while her heart pounded.
“I’m sorry I just saw you sleeping and then I saw your face and I just wanted to make sure you were alright.” He said.
“I’m fine.” She said
“What is a pretty girl like you doing in a place like this?” He asked smiling at her.
Cassidy thought for a minute for the right thing to say and when she had nothing right to ay at all she answered.
“I’m running away, I would appreciate it if you didn’t talk to anyone about me or tell them if the cops come looking for me.” Cassidy said.
The words left her mouth before she even knew what she was saying. The thought of running away had crossed her mind many times but she always figured she would get caught and have to go back to her father.
“I won’t say anything as long as you don’t tell anyone I live here.” The boy said.
“You live here? Why would you want to live in a place like this?” She asked looking around.
“Because it’s the only place no one would find me.” He said with a smile.
“You ran away too?” She asked.
“Pretty much, not that I had anything to really run from, I just hated my parents and wanted to leave, so when I was 16 I found this place. In the 2 years I have lived here not once has a cop stepped foot in here. The only people who come here are the guys early in the morning to use the basketball court. They know I’m here but they won’t tell.” He said looking very please with himself.
“Well I will leave then, I know they will come looking for me and I don’t want to get you into any trouble.” Cassidy said grabbing her backpack and starting to walk away.
“Wait.” The boy called after her.
Cassidy turned around and looked at him. He was very cute, longer curly brown hair and beautiful green eyes. She could see him as someone she would like. If she allowed herself to actually like someone. Boys were never a big thing for her mostly because she was told she could never date as long as she lived in her father’s house.
“Don’t leave, or at least wait until morning. You never know what freaks are out at this time of night.” He said.
She nodded her head in agreement.
“I’m Mark” The boy said holding out his hand.
Cassidy thought of giving him a fake name but changed her mind.
“I’m Cassidy.” She said taking his hand.

Mark decided that it was too much of a risk for them to sleep 2 floors away from each other so Mark invited her to come back to his cleaner apartment where he offered her the bed and he took the couch. Cassidy tried hard to fall back asleep it was no use though and she found herself out in the living room talking with Mark all night. She found out a lot about his life.

When Mark was little he grew up with both of his parents unlike Cassidy but his life wasn’t always so great. Marks father had sexually abused him since he was 3. The authorities tried to put his father away but nothing ever held up in court, there were always extenuating circumstances that got him out Scott free.

Mark continued to be abused while his mother who was too busy partying and doing drugs paid no attention to him at all. She was a lot like Cassidy’s father. She would come home from working late nights at the local strip club or out on the streets depending on how much money she needed for her addiction and pass out from drinking too much.

When Mark was 16 he decided enough was enough when his mother tried to get him to sleep with a girl for money. After refusing to do the dirty thing his mother was asking of him he walked out of the house and never went back. No one ever came looking for him either. He went back a few times with hopes that they had missed him, but as he peered through the windows late at night he saw that nothing had really changed and they could have cared less if he was there.

It took him a year before he stopped visiting his parent’s house. It took him a year to realize that no one really cared about him. He knew he was better off alone. Mark lived in the old nasty grungy apartment complex in apartment number 13; the one Cassidy had walked by earlier that day.  He said he didn’t really know what happened to this place but he worked hard to fix up his room.

Cassidy shared her story with Mark although it seemed like she had an easy life compared to him. She didn’t want him feeling sorry for her but she could see it in his eyes as they talked. By the time the sun was coming up they were getting tired and before Cassidy knew what she was doing they were sleeping in each others arms.

The next morning Cassidy awoke to find the spot on the bed next to her empty. At first she felt a twinge of pain go through her heart like a dagger but then she remembered that she was on the run, she couldn’t get attached to anyone. Cassidy grabbed her backpack and made her way out of the bedroom. The apartment was empty the only thing that even showed that someone lived there were the dirty clothes spread across the floor. Cassidy had almost made it out the door when she heard someone call her name.
"Hey Cassidy where are you going?" Marks voice called out to her as he ran through the door.
"Oh I thought you were gone, I figured it was time I left and found a new place to go to, I don’t want you to get caught and I sure as hell don’t want to get caught still in this town. I think its time I left here and never looked back." Cassidy said. She was still angry that he had left her alone sometime that night.
"Oh, well if you want to I guess you can go, but I had some ideas for tonight. How does dinner and a movie sound? After that then maybe we can figure out where to go." Mark said.
"Where WE can go? There’s no we Mark this is me and only me." Cassidy said.
"Ok well at least stay today and have dinner with me?" He pleaded.
Cassidy felt bad about being so harsh about leaving without him but she was on a mission and she didn’t want anyone to keep her back. She did agree to one more night with him.

Mark had left that morning to "Pick up" some groceries. Cassidy wasn’t happy about him stealing the food but he made her realize that if she was going to make it on the streets she would have to learn quick and part of living on the street was getting the things you needed by any means necessary. Mark managed to walk out with a 5lb turkey and a few potatoes which they turned into a great feast. Cassidy was amazed by how good of a cook he was but then again she figured you had to pick up a few good tricks when you had to feed yourself your whole life. After their bellies were full and there were only a few scraps of food left for sandwiches tomorrow Cassidy and Mark parked themselves on the couch for a night of old movies that Mark had collected over the years. 2 movies in Mark finally made his move, they had been sitting only inches away from each other and he just couldn’t take the tension any longer, he had to do something to break it. He reached over and grabbed Cassidy's hand. When she turned and looked him in the eyes he gently moved his hand up her arm and her shoulder all the way up to her face. He pushed away a piece of stray hair from her eyes and they moved their faces closer. Cassidy couldn’t fight her feelings anymore. Before she knew it their lips were touching, at first lightly and then the kissed evolved into a deep passionate kiss which then turned into a 20 minute make out session on the couch.

Mark finally pulled away and looked Cassidy in the eyes.
"Cassidy, there is just something about you, I can’t explain it but I feel like I have known you forever and I don’t want to see you go."
Cassidy looked at Mark but didn’t say a word. She could see that he truly meant what he said. She pulled at the back of his neck and pulled his head down into another long passionate kiss. 5 minutes later Mark picked Cassidy up and carried her into the bedroom like a husband does to his new bride on their wedding night. Mark and Cassidy spent another 15 minutes making out before Cassidy realized that things were really heating up. She looked at Mark and thought for a second. She knew what they were about to do was wrong but she didn’t want to stop. She cared about him like she had never cared for anyone before and she could see it in his eyes that he felt the same. She let her fears subside as Marks lips caressed her neck.

It was 3am when Cassidy was awoken by a loud banging noise. She didn’t know what it was until she heard voices.
"Cassidy James if you are here come out now." A deep mans voice said. Cassidy could pick out that voice in a room of a million people.
"Oh no Mark, it’s him he found me." Cassidy cried.
"Mark ran to the door and tried to barricade it but the man was just too strong.
Cassidy tried to escape out the window but a large hand gripped on to the back of her shirt and wouldn’t let go.
"Cassidy you are in some major trouble when we get home." The man said dragging Cassidy all the way out of the apartments by her hair.

The car ride was quiet the whole way home. Cassidy had expected her father to scream the entire way but he kept whatever he was thinking to himself for the time being. Cassidy tried not to look at him but she could see the vain by his right temple throbbing like it does when he is angry. She knew she was in for it when they got home.

Cassidy continued to look out the car window into the darkness of the night. The car ride seemed all too short and her father pulled the car into the driveway.
"Get out" He quietly said to her through gritted teeth.
Cassidy knew the drill and when she got into the house she went straight to her room. It wasn't long before her father made his appearance in her doorway and she could tell by the look on his face that she was going to be in for one rough night.
"How dare you go off telling your friends about what goes on in this house." He screamed. Cassidy kept quiet knowing if she spoke up the consequences would be ten times worse. Her father continued.
"And then that school of yours goes off telling the cops about me, do you realize what I had to go through the other day. I had to tell them that your mentally unstable and that you cut yourself and hurt yourself just so they wouldn't take me to jail. Do you know what happens to you if I go to jail?....Do you? You will go to a foster home thats filled with 5 maybe 10 more kids just like you. Do you think that life is any better than the life I can give you girl?"
Cassidy wanted to scream and shout at him and tell him that yes it would be better than the life she had living under his roof.
"For them not to bring criminal charges against me I had to agree that you will speak to that Mrs. Laing woman at your school 3 times a week during your lunch period. You will talk to her but you will NOT tell her anything about what goes on in this house you got that? You will tell her you are depressed and you need help." Mr. James said.
"Oh and running away.... whats with that? do you want to live on the streets? do you want some sicko to molest you and do only god knows what to you? And to make matters worse I find you in bed stark naked with a BOY!! Do you think your an adult? I don't even want to know what you did with that boy but let me tell you what you little SLUT!!" With that Cassidys father grabbed her by the throat and slammed her body up against the wall.
"You will not be seeing that boy again and if I even see you so much as looking at any boy I will knock the eyes right off your face."
With the word face he tightened his grip and banged the back of her head harder on the wall. Cassidy felt the room spin and then as usual when she was fighting with her father everything went black.

The next few weeks were hell for Cassidy. She went to school and went straight home. Where she was to make her father dinner and was actually forced to eat it with him. Then she went to her room to do her homework and then went straight to bed. Most nights she was in bed before 9pm. She wasn't allowed out of the house alone and in the mornings her father would drive the car slowly behind her watching her walk to school. Mr. James was too good to actually drive her there himself. Cassidy's meetings with Mrs. Laing were not much of a relief to her daily life. Cassidy told her the stories of cutting herself and making herself hurt like her father had drilled into her head. Mrs. Laing and a few other "doctors" had labeled her depressed and mentally ill but her father would not sign the papers to have her put away in an asylum. Cassidy wondered to herself if he actually cared about her but then she just figured he didn't want to loose his personal slave.

One morning about 2 months after her attempt to run away Cassidy awoke to a gut wrenching pain and she almost didn't make it to the bathroom before she got sick. She had been feeling this way for the past week but didn't think much of it until today. As she was laying on the cool tiled floor pictures of her and Kevin making love flooded her thoughts. She could picture his brown eyes and brown curly hair. She could smell the sent of his Axe body wash filling the room. With the thought of the smell she jolted up and hung her head over the toilet to be sick again. When she felt like she couldnt be sick anymore she laied back down on the floor and then another thought raced through her head and the words "Oh God no!" escaped from her lips.

Cassidy tried to keep her thoughts on school and her impending meeting with Mrs. Laing but she found it hard to concentrate on her school work and for the first half of the morning she could barely lift her head off her desk. All of her teachers had been informed about her mental status and most of them just left her alone. It wasn't until right before lunch that Tiffany finally said something to Cassidy as they were in the upstairs girls bathroom alone. Cassidy was in the stall heaving her guts out as Tiffany touched up her makeup in the bathroom mirror.
"Cassidy are you sure your ok?" Tiffany asked.
"Yeah I'm fine." Cassidy said opening the bathroom stall and walking over to the sink to wash out her mouth.
"You don't look fine, do you have the flu?" Tiff asked.
"Probably, but you know my dad I have to be dying for him to take me to a doctor and even then I doubt he would." Cassidy tried to joke but she didn't really find anything funny about it and neither did Tiffany.
Tiffany looked Cassidy over once and then again this time stopping at the slight expansion of Cassidy's usually petite waist line.
"Oh my God Cassidy your not.....?" Tiffany began.
"Tiffany don't you dare say it. Please don't you say it. If you say it then it becomes reality." Cassidy said in tears.
Tiffany grabbed Cassidy and embraced her in a hug.
"Don't worry Cass we will get it figured out ok." Tiffany said.
Cassidy nodded and continued to cry in Tiffany's arms.
Cassidy pulled away from Tiffany and ran back into the stall. After 10 more minutes of being sick Cassidy emerged from the stall looking worse than ever.
"Come on Cass we are getting you out of here." Tiffany said.
"No I cant Tiff, I'm suposed to meet with Mrs. Laing, If I don't show she will call my dad and then he will beat the snot out of me, I just cant cut class." Cassidy cried.
"I'm not letting you go back home to that man Cassidy, he has hurt you too much and now with this......news you cant stay there. Plus we need to get you to a doctor." Tiffany argued.
"Please don't make me go Tiff please just not today." Cassidy argued.
"Fine but tomorrow at lunch your going to a doctor." Tiffany said matter of factly.
Cassidy nodded and forced down the feeling of being sick again and left the bathroom for her meeting with Mrs. Laing.

The next morning Cassidy found herself doing the same thing as the morning before, trying to throw up quietly so she didn’t wake up her father. So far she had been successful. Tiffany and Cassidy had spoke the night before in code on MSN instant messenger so her father couldn’t check the files. Tiffany said that she would have her brother pick them up at lunch time and then drive Cassidy to the Planed Parenthood downtown. They do free pregnancy testing there and they would be able to help her in any decision she would make. Cassidy was surprised to find her father still passed out in the living room when it came time for her to get walking to school. She thought about waking him up but then she thought again and found that it was finally her chance to walk to school a different route, a route that would take her by Kevin's apartment and she knew he would be outside playing basketball. Cassidy grabbed her backpack and ran out of the house before thinking twice.

As Cassidy neared the old apartment building she could feel her stomach churn and had to duck behind a bush to get sick.
After emptying her stomach of whatever she had left in it to begin with she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around expecting it to be her father but was pleasantly surprised to be staring into Kevin’s brown eyes.
"Cassidy are you ok?" He asked helping her up off the grass.
"Umm yeah I’m fine just not feeling well today." She said. She didn’t want to just throw the news at him. She had to find a way to ease it into a conversation. Kevin grabbed her and wrapped her up in a hug.
"I was so worried about you Cassidy; I didn’t think I would ever see you again." He said squeezing her harder. It took all of her might to not throw up on him.
"I know Kevin, I have missed you terribly." She said when he let go of her.
Kevin grabbed her hands and looked into her eyes.
"Cassidy I have never felt this way before in my life, Cassidy James I love you." He said.
Cassidy felt her stomach churn again as she knew this was the time to tell him that he had gotten her pregnant.
"Kevin I have to tell you something, can we go up to your apartment for a few minutes?" She asked.
Kevin nodded his head and held her hand the entire way.

They sat down on the couch and he gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. Cassidy took a deep breath before starting.
"Kevin you know I care about you and I want to be with you more than anything in the world." She paused for a moment to look at him straight in the eyes and she could see that he looked troubled by what she was saying. She didn’t want to tell him but she knew she had to.
"Kevin, what we did that night was.... well..... My first time with anyone ever."
"It was my first time too Cassidy." Kevin interrupted.
"I’m glad we got to share it then...... but there is something more...... Kevin I think I’m pregnant." She said pulling away from his arms that were around her. She was ashamed and didn’t want to look him in the eyes.
He was silent for a moment and then Cassidy felt his hand caress her face and turn it towards him.
"Cassidy that’s great news, I will stick by you no matter what. We will get married and you can live here with me and we can be a family." Kevin said in a low voice that was almost a whisper.
"I can’t Kevin, my dad found me once he will find me again. I’m already taking a huge risk coming here in the first place, if he found out he would beat the hell out of me and who knows what he will do when he finds out I’m pregnant. I’m going to Planned Parenthood today during lunch to find out for sure. Then I will decide from there." Cassidy said.
"I want to go with you." Kevin stated getting defensive. "And I don’t want you to kill our baby Cassidy, that baby is just as much mine as it is yours." He said.
"I knew you would get upset, I don’t know why I even told you." Cassidy shouted as she ran from the apartment. Kevin tried to follow her but it was no use, she had already gone too far.

Morning classes seemed to go on forever for Cassidy. For some reason lunch couldn’t come soon enough. When the bell finally rang for her lunch period she ran to her locker to grab her bag and then slipped out the back doors by the janitor’s closet where no one could see her. She walked along the back of the school but stopped when she saw a figure walking closer to her. It didn’t take long for her to figure out who it was.
"Kevin what are you doing here?" She asked
"I told you I want to come to this appointment." He said.
Cassidy decided not to fight him anymore; she just didn’t have the energy. Kevin followed her to the parking lot where she met up with Tiffany.
"I’m assuming your Kevin?" Tiffany said with her arms crossed.
"Yes I am, and you are?" He asked.
"Tiffany, Cassidy’s best friend." She said in a rather mean tone.
"Well it’s nice to meet you Tiffany." Kevin said extending his arm for a friendly handshake.
Tiffany looked at Kevin intensely for a few moments before taking his had. She wasn’t sure about his intentions about this whole thing and she had to be careful.
They got into the car and the 20 minute ride to Planned Parenthood was rather silent. Kevin had insisted on sitting in the back next to Cassidy even though Tiffany protested it. Kevin held Cassidy's hand the whole way. Cassidy wasn’t sure what to think of him now, she didn’t know what her plan was so she didn’t know what to do.

The waiting room of Planned Parenthood was rather quiet as well. There were a few girls there some with boyfriends and some alone. A few of them looked to be around Cassidy's age and she noticed Amanda Walker a very popular girl in their school sitting there in tears with a woman who looked to be her mother. She didn’t know what to think of it but she didn’t want to say anything to her and make the situation whatever it was worse than it already seemed. Cassidy sat in between Kevin and Tiffany for 20 minutes before a nurse called her name. When all three of them stood up the nurse stated that only one person was allowed back in the room with Cassidy. Although she didn’t want to Tiffany sat back down and allowed Kevin to go with Cassidy. The nurse handed Cassidy a plastic cup and showed her the way to the bathroom and told her how to collect the specimen. Then she took Kevin to their exam room where he waited patiently in a chair. When Cassidy walked into the exam room she took a seat on the table and stared at her fingers. This was the first time she and Kevin had been alone since that morning. Kevin rolled his chair over to her and lifted her face with his hand.
"I’m sorry for getting upset Cassidy. This is just the best thing that has happened to me since meeting you. I finally get to have the chance to be a father to someone, to prove that I can be better than my father and better than your father. I am really excited about this." He said with a tear in his eye.
Cassidy opened her mouth to respond but just then the door opened and a woman in a white lab coat walked in.
"Hello..... Cassidy." She said looking down at Cassidy's chart.
"Hi." Cassidy said looking down at her hands again.
"And you are?" The doctor asked looking at Kevin.
"Cassidy's boyfriend, Kevin." He said holding his hand out to shake the doctors.
Cassidy laughed in her head at how friendly Kevin was it was something she really loved about him.
"Well kids I have some news for you both then I guess......... Cassidy you seem to be almost 12 weeks pregnant." The doctor said. Cassidy felt the tears well up in her eyes and she tried hard to hold them back.
"I can see your upset about this so obviously it wasn’t a planned pregnancy. Being so far along I’m sorry to say that you will have to carry the baby to term. Do you know what you want to do then?" The doctor asked.
Cassidy looked up at her and shook her head no.
"Well there is always the option of adoption; it’s a great way for teens such as you to start over. I have a few pamphlets that I will send home with you along with your prenatal vitamins. Go ahead and look them over and you can decide from there. Please take the time to read them; this isn’t a decision to make lightly." The doctor said.
Cassidy walked to the front desk and made her next appointment for next month at the same time during lunch. Tiffany's brother agreed to pick them all up at school for her appointments.
Tiffany and Cassidy returned to school and Kevin stuck around the elementary school playground for the rest of the day until school got out. He knew he had to talk to Cassidy; he had to convince her to keep this baby and be a family with him.

When the final bell of the day rang Cassidy forced herself out of her desk and through the hallways. Her motion was robot like as she put her books in her bag and walked out the front doors of the school. She decided it was best to walk her normal route home and she was about 2 blocks from home when she saw Kevin walking straight towards her. She tried to turn and run but by the time she thought about it Kevin had already grabbed her arm.
"Cassidy please talk to me, we need to talk about this." He pleaded with her.
"Kevin what is wrong with you, do you not realize we are only 2 blocks away from my home. If my father sees me talking to you I don’t know what he will do to me." She cried.
"That’s the problem Cassidy; don’t you see how much it matters that you leave that place? It could mean your life and the life of our baby." Kevin said.
"Kevin please we barely know each other, I don’t know what makes you think I’m just going to run away with you. I will figure this baby thing out myself, now PLEASE let me go!" Cassidy said squirming away from his grip.
"Cassidy.... wait!" He called after her as she ran.
He decided against following her. He had already upset her enough and he knew it wasn’t good for the baby for her to have so much to deal with.

Kevin walked home thinking the whole way. He was enraged that she wouldn’t see things his way. He just knew as soon as her father found out he would kill her and the baby. He walked through the door of his apartment and slammed it shut hard enough to make what few pictures he had on the wall fall to the floor. Luckily nothing was broken. He stood there for a moment before taking his hand and punching a hole through the wall.

3 weeks went by and Cassidy had still managed to keep the pregnancy a secret from her father. One day he found her lying on the bathroom floor after having a bout of morning sickness. She told her father that there was a bug going around at school and she would really like to stay home but her father would have none of that and sent her off to school anyway. Cassidy was very pleased that he believed the flu story. That Friday morning Cassidy approached her fathers chair cautiously and tried to wake him up as nicely as possible.
"Daddy?" She said quietly shaking his arm just enough to make him stir.
"Daddy...." She said a bit louder.
"What do you want?" He said not even opening his eyes to look at her.
"I have a book report to work on is it ok if I go to the library after school?" She asked.
"What is the report about?" He asked still not looking at her.
"Tom Sawyers Huckle Berry Fin." Cassidy said just as she rehearsed.
"I guess but get home before dark you hear me." He said.
"Yes Sir." She replied and with that walked out the door with a smile on her face.

Cassidy's stomach was starting to get a bit noticeable and she was forced to wear her normal pants unbuttoned with a long shirt that didn’t do a very good job of hiding her bump but what can you do when you can’t go buy the correct clothes? Most people didn’t notice but the few that did knew right away she was trying to hide something. She knew it wasn’t going to be long before her secret was out at school and even with Mrs. Laing who she knew would call her father. She was surprised that she hadn’t already caught on. After another very long day at school Cassidy walked a block past the school into town and to the large stone building that was usually her sanctuary. Cassidy loved books more than life itself and found it a great way to escape her own reality of hell.

Today’s trip to the library was not in fact for a book report. Cassidy needed to learn more information about pregnancy in itself and most of all learn more about adoption. She knew she had to decide fast what she wanted to do but deep down in her heart she knew the only choice she had. She hated the life she has and there was no way she was going to force a perfectly helpless baby to have to go through what she does with her father. Cassidy walked past her normal fantasy section of the library and went straight to the self help section. It was a small selection but she grabbed 2 books about pregnancy and 3 on adoption. Cassidy was amazed to learn that the baby was already 5 inches long and about 5oz in weight too. For her size that seemed so big. The books also suggested that she would begin to feel the baby move soon. Something about feeling something else move inside of Cassidy gave her a warm fuzzy feeling. She almost didn’t even notice when her hand let go of the book and found a resting place on her little baby bump. She sat there for a few moments thinking and then got up with the books in hand. She hadn’t even touched the adoption books, she knew she couldn’t. She instantly realized that Kevin was right and there was no way she was going to give up her baby, the life she created with her own body to some stranger she didn’t even know. It was already 4:30 but Cassidy knew where she was headed next. She grabbed her book bag and left the library in a rush to get where she was going.

Cassidy ran as fast as her pregnant legs could carry her. She never realized how out of shape she was since she became pregnant. Finally Cassidy found herself outside Kevin’s apartment door. She stood there for a moment catching her breath before knocking on the door. When no one answered she turned the door knob and when the door opened without force she walked inside. She figured that there was probably no key to the apartment so Kevin had to leave the door unlocked. When she walked inside the apartment felt stuffy to her and she could see that he had left no windows open. Cassidy walked from room to room but Kevin couldn’t be found anywhere. She went into his bedroom and sat down on the bed, the very bed that the baby inside of her was created that oh so wonderful night. Cassidy noticed how tired she was and decided to take a short nap while she waited for Kevin to come home. She wanted to change out of her clothes so she opened up the dresser to find one of Kevin’s T shirts that she could put on instead. When she opened the top drawer she found it to be empty. Cassidy panicked and frantically opened every drawer but there were no clothes at all.

Cassidy ran from the bedroom to the kitchen and swung open the door on the refrigerator. There wasn’t a single thing in it to eat or drink. Cassidy hit the ground hard as she plopped down right there on the kitchen floor. It wasn’t until she took a few seconds to look around that she noticed all the posters on the walls were gone too. Cassidy pounded her fists against the floor as she cried.
“I was too late…..too late.” She cried.

Kevin stared at his feet as he walked down the sidewalk, all he had with him was the few pairs of clothing he owned, some bread and peanut butter, and the 15 bucks he had to his name. He knew Cassidy was never going to see things the way he did so he decided that it was best to leave. He knew if he stayed in that town he would have to watch as his child was given to someone else to raise or worse watch Cassidy’s father beat up his child like he does to Cassidy. Kevin decided that, that life was just too much for him and he had to leave.

Cassidy pulled herself together after a half hour of crying on the kitchen floor. She wanted to find Kevin she had to find him. She didn’t want to raise this baby alone and she wasn’t about to give it up for adoption. Not now, not knowing the way she cared about him and the baby. Cassidy ran out of the apartment as fast as she could. She knew she had to at least get out of town before her father came looking for her. The apartment would be the first place he would go so it wasn’t safe there anymore.

Cassidy walked for what felt like years and she finally stopped to take a rest under a huge willow tree. She didn’t know where Kevin was or even how much of a head start he had gotten on her but Cassidy was determined to find him. After her rest she decided to get moving again. She had to get as far away as she could just in case her father was out looking for her.

She knew staying in one place for a long time would only make it easier to find her. After another hour of walking Cassidy’s body was beginning to weaken from lack of food and water, she knew she had to find a way to eat fast but how, she had no money and she didn’t want to steal. Finally her body got the best of her and she was forced to find a store to at least get a candy bar from. Cassidy walked into a 24 hour gas station and walked around for a few minutes to make sure no one was looking before she grabbed 3 candy bars and stuffed them in her pocket. Cassidy began to walk out of the store when pain through her whole body came over her. First she saw red then everything went black. The last thing she remembered were loud voices screaming and someone’s hands touching her.
