I don't even use it for the woohoo aspect (the whole woohoo thing is just too stupid for me), but because it is the only thing that allows teens to continue to interact as peers with their "elders", the YAs. If you don't know how to download anything, read any of the tutorials on TSR and learn about it.
You have to have either WinRar or Winzip to download anything from any site-and usually you should have both because all downloads are one or the other. Another good thing to have is the "Sims File Maid 2" which I use to unzip my downloads. It saves time and aggravation, because you don't have to individually unzip and place any of the stuff in your Downloads folder. Also, you should go to the Sims Wiki site and learn more about the game-MTS is the founder of it, and many of the creators wrote articles for it.
