Chapter 1: Holding back the tears

“Not again!” Angela lifted up her book that had just disappeared under a flow of cocoa. Liam looked up at her with those irresistible puppy-eyes of his.

“Liam’s sorry. Book?”
“Here,” Angela said, and handed him his colouring book. “Just try to be a bit careful, please?”

“Liam try be careful next time.” he said, and scurried off to the kitchen in a run.
Angela sighed. At least he was over that knocking-things-over-at-purpose stage now. He was just a bit… clumsy.

She turned back to her homework again – and sighed when she saw the cocoa had made the pages sticky, brown and wet. She tried to sweep it away, but no luck. The cocoa was stuck in the paper.

Frustrated, she reached for the paper roll.

And all of a sudden, she couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. She buried her head in her hands, and just let it all out. If only her mother could come in that door right now. Telling her everything was fine. Telling her that it was no need to cry. Helping her clean up her book. Or just write a note to her teacher about it not being Angela’s fault. It wouldn’t happen, she knew. Her mother was gone forever.

It was not the same having her dad fuss over her, trying to be a good parent. Yes, she loved him, and he was a good father, but a father was not the same as a mother. A mother is someone a girl can talk to about near to everything, almost like a father to a boy. It’s limited what you dare say to your dad when you’re almost thirteen and need someone to talk to about certain… embarrassing things.  It’s just not the same.
Angela dried up her tears. Well, at least she tried to do it. They kept coming.

Nothing was the same anymore. At least she could call her mother when she still was isolated at the hospital, but now… the only girl she could talk to, was Alice. And it’s pretty limited what a four year old understands – and even care to talk about. What was more; both Alice and Liam never really knew their mother. Liam had barely met her, and had a closer relationship to their father than to their mother. Alice was already adjusting to their situation, and had stopped calling for “mommy” now. For some reason, that was one thing Angela hadn’t really gotten used to. She often caught herself in calling for her mother, only to then realise that she wasn’t there anymore.

The dirt didn’t go off her book. It only made the pages worse. Frustrated, she threw the book away.

It banged into the wall, and fell in a heap at the floor. That didn’t make the book any cleaner, but it certainly helped. She didn’t feel so angry anymore. Only sad.

She was supposed to write a poem for tomorrow. She had had a week to do it, but the start never really came to her. She had several ideas, but none were good. Poems weren’t really her. Yes, she loved writing songs, but lately none of them were any good. She hadn’t written a single song since her mother had died. Not one text. Not one melody. Her inspiration was completely gone. Browsing through the texts in her English book hadn’t helped at all.
She sighed, and got up from her chair. She picked up the book, and got relieved when she saw it wasn’t broken. Only a bit weak in the seams. Though it was still wet from the cocoa.

She threw the book on the table. She might as well give up. Write something simple but unimaginative. Her teacher would probably just sigh, and give her C or something like that. She had done that last time.

When something simple didn’t even come into her mind, she gave up. She couldn’t even come up with two words that rhymed. Nothing at all. She left her school books at the table, and went to the bathroom. Maybe a shower could help her. Before, she had often gotten her best ideas in the shower.

But no. Not a single little idea sprang into her mind as the water ran down her body – even though she stood there for at least half an hour.
“Are you finished, Angela?” her father yelled from outside.
“Almost.”

She got out of the shower, and put a towel around her. Then, something caught her eye. A reflection in the mirror. She turned back, and jumped.

In the mirror, a familiar face stared back at her. A smooth face, surrounded by red curls, and shockingly green eyes looked back at her - and for one long moment, she was convinced her mother was back.

I'm hoping to get the next chapter out as soon as I can enter my game again. it takes almost an hour to start it, though (too much downloads...) and because of an assignment and scool that takes a little too much of my time at the moment, it might be almost a week to the next chapter. I'm just happy my winter holiday starts friday night (which hopefully means one week with playing sims :D)

I just noticed a possible continuity error-

Angela sung "one of her own songs" at her mother's funeral. If she wrote this song just for the funeral, wouldn't that have been after she died.


Of course, I'm just being picky. "Since her mother died" is kind of vague, so it could mean slightly after her death.

Chapter 2: reflection

One long moment, she was convinced her mother was back. The word “Mom” hung on her lips, ready to come out. But when she got aware of the shocked expression in the face she was seeing, the reality came back to her in a flash.
It was not her mother come back to life.
It was not her mother staring at her in the mirror.
Not her mother at all.
It was herself.
Angela.

It was as like the striking likeness Angela had to her mother was mocking her. The same red, curly hair. The same clear, green eyes. Almost the same features. She was sure that when she grew up, she would be like a mirror image of her mother. Why did she always get reminded of her mother when she saw herself in the mirror? Every. Single. Time.
She had started to hate mirrors. Sometimes she felt like she was walking around in the mirror hall at a carnival.

In everything she did, she was always reminded of her mother. Whether it was a TV-programme, her homework, when she tried to sleep, and when she saw her own reflection. Even Alice reminded her about her mother, though she also had some of their father in her features.
Sometimes she just wanted to hit something. Break something. Just to get her frustration out. Stop being sad all the time. Stop thinking about her mother all the time. Go back to a normal life. Hah! As if her life could ever become normal again!

*CRASH*
Angela started, and her consciousness jerked back to the present.
Her hand hurt a lot. That was the first she noticed.

She looked down. Her hand was all bloodied. Why? And it also hurt a lot.
She looked up again, and saw the mirror was gone.

Pieces of glass lay on the floor in front of her feet and in the sink. She stepped back, trying not to put her feet in the glass.
“Angela, is everything all right in there?” her dad yelled, and she could hear the worried tone in his voice.

“Yes. Everything all right.”
As if! Things would never be all right. Not now, not ever!
She tried to pick up the pieces of glass, but they were too sharp.

She realised that she had to tell her father. She didn’t know how to fix it. She washed her hand, and wrapped it in a towel. Then she opened the door.
“Finally!” her father said, before he saw her hand. And then, the pieces of glass on the floor.

“What happened?”
“The… the mirror broke.”
“How on earth did that happen?”
“It… it fell down… I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll clean up here so no one steps in it. I’ll fix it later.”
He found a mop, and cleaned the floor, while she waited.

When he finished, he took the first-aid box, and guided her into the living room.
“You’ve got to be more careful, Angela. Don’t pick up pieces of glass with bare hands.”
“I know,” was all she said. Tears threatened to come out, and the lump in her throat only grew and grew.

Ian cleaned the wound and bandaged her hand. “There. Does it hurt?”
“Not much.” Not as bad as the pain inside her, anyway.
He sat down beside her, and put his arm around her shoulder.
“Angela…”
She swallowed. “Yes?”

“If you have troubles, you know you can come to me with them. It’s… I…I’m trying to be a good father for you. For all of you. I know it hurts. I’ve loved your mother since the first time I saw her. I know that things never will be the same. We just have to manage.”

She could see tears in his eyes. This had to be just as hard for him as for her.
“I know, Dad. It’s just… I miss her so much.” Her tears were suddenly unstoppable.
“I miss her, too. More than you could ever know.” Ian put his arms around her, and they sat there for a long time, just comforting each other, and crying.

Angela suddenly appeared behind their father. “Yes.”

“No. I don’t want to. I don’t want you to go either.”

It felt like the world had suddenly turned blurry around Brian. He knew what would happen.
He ran after the car, yelling “Please don’t go!”
But it was too late. The other car was coming around the corner.

Screeches of wheels. Metal crushing itself inwards. The choking smell of gas and smoke. People screaming.

But the one screaming the loudest, was a twelve year old child. A young boy that had just lost the rest of his family.

The scream of her brother made her shiver like it was winter outside. She threw up the door. “Brian? Brian! What is it?”
Then, she saw her brother twist around in his bedcovers, screaming.

“Brian, you’re dreaming! Wake up!” she gripped his shoulders, and shook him carefully. He threw up his eyes, and turned towards her with a shocked expression, breathing hard.

“Relax, Brian. You were having a nightmare. I could hear your scream all over to my room.”
It seemed like he was only five again. She could remember their mother holding around his shoulders, comforting him. He had had a lot of nightmares when he was little.
“Brian… do you want to talk about it?”

She sat down beside him, and took his hand. “There, there. It’s all right now.” She could feel him shaking. He was crying, she realized.

“You know, Mom often said that if you talked about your problems, they might go away. Or at least turn smaller then they seemed at first. It helps to talk about it.”

“I… for the last few months, I’ve had… nightmares. Like before. I thought they were gone, but now they’re there again. And they’re much worse than they used to be.” He sniffled.
Angela felt the urge to give him a hug. “What are you dreaming?”

 “That…that…” he sniffled again. “That I’m losing you. All of you. That all of you are suddenly gone, and that I’m standing there, watching it all. It’s like I know what will happen, but I can’t do anything about it. It’s so scary.”
Angela gave him a long hug.

Angela tiptoed to her room, and slipped under her own bedcovers.
Only then, she realized what she had really said to her brother.

 “I’m starting to sound like mom,” she mumbled. Then, the tears were impossible to stop. She let them come. She’d never missed her mother as much as just then.

Her mother that would’ve first comforted her brother, and then she would’ve come in and stroked Angela’s head.
“Go to sleep now, Angela. I’ll tell the stars that they shall only give you and your brother sweet dreams the rest of the night.”
Angela cried herself to sleep. Tomorrow would be yet another day, where she would come up with new situations where she missed her mother. Yet another day.

too close to what i'm feeling about my own parents.

Wow!  This is a great read!  You're doing such a great job at capturing Angela's pain.  You're really there, in her head, and showing us what her recovery is like - very slow, very painful.  I love the pictures.  The mirror and the bloodied hand - the picture of Ian holding the babies.  Excellent work.  I'm glad you decided to do a sequel - because so far, it's every bit as good as the first.  Can't wait to read the next part!

well, as I've learned of all the stories I've written - self-experienced things are the easiest to write about (but they can also be the hardest too, in many ways). I've lost too many people I loved, and among them a brother and a grandmother that meant very much to me.

i lost 4 aunts that i know of a brother who i never knew. a grandmother,  2 granddads that i didn't know. 1 grandomther that i didn't know. sometimes i guess to read stories like these somewhat helps me to cope with the pain. and in time i will mend.
keep the stories coming.

I feel the same about writing them. it gets all the bad feelings out, you know. I feel very related to all the characters in this story, and in most of my stories I put in some of myself. it adds to the realism, and the story feels much stronger.

It sure does add some realism! It's so good! I can't wait for the next chapter!

Ch.4: wishing doesn’t make it come true

”I miss you, mom,” Angela said, as she put a rose on the grave.

She didn’t like the winter anymore. It made the soil too hard to plant flowers. A rose had to do. For now. She looked forward to the spring. Then, they could plant a small rose tree and a few other flowers.
“Miss you, too,” Alice said, before she hugged the grave stone.

Liam hugged the stone, too. “Bye mom,” he said, and waved towards it as Ian picked him up.
Brian didn’t say anything. He’d been awfully quiet lately, and didn’t say anything unless he had to. He seemed lost in his own thoughts. She understood why. She felt it like that, too – though she didn’t have nightmares like he did.

That psychologist they’d talked to – some kind of family therapy – had said that people took sorrow in their own way. Some cried. Some tried to not show any feelings at all – but inside, they were all crying. Angela was crying both on the inside and the outside. Sometimes it felt like she didn’t have tears left in her eyes. That only made her cry even more.
“Can we go home now?” Liam asked.

“Yes. Now we’re going home.” Their father looked like he was on the brink of starting to cry.
“Can I sit here a few more minutes?” Angela asked.

“Only a few minutes. Until I’ve put Liam and Alice in their seats.” He threw one last look on the gravestone, before turning around. She saw that his eyes were red, and that tears had finally found their way down his cheeks.

Angela nodded, and turned back to the grave as the others went to the car.
“My highest wish has been for you to come back to us, mom. I know it’s not possible, but if it was… if it was, everything would’ve been easier.

Dad’s so sad all the time. And Brian isn’t talking so much like he used to, and he’s having nightmares. I’m actually missing his teasing. It feels like… like our family is missing a crucial part. Like you was the only one holding it together. The only one that made us all happy.
I just wish you could be here for Christmas. It’s not going to be fun without you. It’s only a week or so for Christmas, you know.”
She sighed. “Well, wishing doesn’t make it come true, like you used to say. Good bye, mom.”

All her life, Angela had loved Christmas. Now, she hated it. They’d already celebrated one Christmas without their mother, and that was not fun at all. Then, it had only been five months from her death. Now it was one year and five months. Ian tried to be cheerful, but didn’t quite manage it. Angela saw him crying over the pots when he was making their Christmas dinner.

Now they sat in the living room, all dressed up – but everyone over four years old had a sober look, even though they all were trying to smile.
Liam didn’t fully grasp the atmosphere, and seemed somewhat cheerful. He loved getting presents, and would’ve thrown himself over them if Ian had let him.

Alice seemed torn between being happy and being sad.
She’d apparently made a present for their mother in kindergarten, and was sad that she couldn’t give it to her. Ian had promised her that they would visit the grave again the next day, so she could put what she’d made next to the lamp.

Angela had made a small angel at school, which she had already put on the grave. A smiling angel with red, curly hair.
“So… next is for Brian, from granny.” Ian handed him a small gift wrapped in silver paper.

He unwrapped it. “A book from my favourite series! Remind me to thank her the next time I see her, Dad.”
 “I will. So…. the last one is…. for Liam, from me.”
Liam threw himself over the gift, and ripped off the paper. “Tigger!” he exclaimed, before he hugged the Tigger toy tight, and started playing with it.

 “And… well, it doesn’t look like there’s anymore. Anyone up for dessert?”

They went to the table, and he sat a large cake made of ice cream in front of them. The others threw themselves over it. Angela didn’t really feel like eating. To be honest with herself, she felt a bit sick. How she had wished her mother was there now – sharing joy, sharing gifts. Celebrate life, really. Or just be happy together.
“Angela… aren’t you hungry?” Ian said worried.

“Not really, no. I probably ate too much of the other food.”
“You should try this cake, Angela. It’s really good!” Brian ate like he had not seen food in a long time.

“You hardly ate anything at all for dinner. Are you sick?”
“I’m not sure. I don’t think so.”
Ian felt her forehead. “You’re not warm, at least.” For some reason, he looked very relieved.
“I’m just not hungry, that’s all.” She got up, and left the table. Tears were threatening again.

When she got to her room, she couldn’t hold them in anymore. She threw herself on the bed – but landed on something hard. Curious, she stuck her hand under the pillow. A small wrapped gift lay there.
She blinked away the tears. Why was there a gift under her pillow? She took it up, and turned it around carefully.

No, there were no notes of any kind. Strange… she was about to put it on her night table, when she noticed a paper stuck into the wrapping on the side. She took it out. Here and there, some of the text was a bit blurry for some reason, but she could still grasp the meaning.

A tear made a wet spot on the paper, making the word “bring” go a bit more blurry. She understood the ps. She also understood that some of the blurry spots had formed on the paper when her father had read it. She swallowed.

Keep the good memories in your heart and try not to think of the bad ones. She had done the exact opposite, she knew. The good memories of her mother had been overshadowed by the bad ones. Memories of her mother reading for her, singing songs for her, hugging her – all of those had been drowned by memories of her mother looking ill, her mother lying in a hospital bed, and her mother being too sick to even notice they had visited her. Even worse – the funeral had been the worst memory of them all. She remembered that day. She had barely been able to sing, but she had felt that she had to do it – for her mother, more than for herself. She remembered her mother telling her that she loved Angela’s voice. Angela had several times sung songs when they had visited her at the hospital. It had always made her mother smile.
Angela dried her eyes, and carefully opened the gift. Inside was a small red book.
She stared at the front cover for a long time. This was her mother’s inner thoughts. Did she dare open it?

Beautiful update.  You so greatly capture the heartache and pain of this family, struggling to live a normal life but not being able to.  It really rips my heart out  - which is good, because that means you're doing your job as a writer correctly.  Great job!

Chapter 6: a gift of memories

Yes, she thought. Her mother had meant for her to have it. She carefully opened up to the front page. Inside, a little note was fastened with a paper clip.

Angela held the piece of paper against her chest. She couldn’t hold back the tears. But now they were tears of happiness. She smiled for real for the first time since… since… she couldn’t remember. She put aside the note, and carefully opened the first side of the book.

There, on the top of the page, was a wedding photo of her parents. She smiled. They looked so happy together. She realised that every time she had seen them together, they had always been happy.

Under the pictures, her mother had also written comments that reflected the pictures. Angela just had to smile when she saw the one beside the wedding photo.
The next picture was of two proud parents holding a newborn baby between them.
Angela realized it had to be her, since she could see some red hair on the top of the baby’s head.

The next picture was of the same little baby, smiling up at the photographer. There was also a text beside this one.

The next was a picture of a little red-haired girl smiled back at her – herself that too, she realized. She had food sprayed all over her face, and had apparently tried emptying the food bowl over her head. Angela couldn’t hold back the smile that was threatening. She looked hilarious!

In the next picture, Brian was also there, throwing a fit in Anna’s arms, while they apparently were trying to take a family photo. Angela almost started to laugh out loud.

The next was of a three year old Angela with wide open eyes, looking like she had gotten the biggest shock of her life.

For some reason, Angela vaguely remembered that day. She had thought that it was some kind of play-date, and had been really shocked to hear that her mother was starting to work again, and that she had to be in day care. Not that she hadn’t liked it – but she wanted much more to be at home with her mother. She smiled at the memory, and looked at the next picture, which was of her and Brian playing in the sandbox together with their mother. They looked so happy together. Anna had always loved playing with them, and had learned them to love music.

She’d once told Angela that she had played the violin when she’d been younger. It had always been Anna’s favourite instrument – until she had heard Angela playing the piano for the first time. According to Anna, Angela had been a nature talent in playing the piano. Much thanks to her mother, Angela thought.

The next picture was of her, four years old on a three-wheel bike, with Brian running after her. He had wanted a bike too, after Angela had gotten one for her fourth birthday. He had run after her every time she used it, begging, and also crying, to be allowed to use it. In the end, he had tried to push her off it. She read the comment under the picture.

She couldn’t stop the laughter this time. It was like someone had just turned on a button inside her – one that had been off since her mother had died. The one that let her be happy.
Still giggling, she looked at the next picture. It was from her first day at school.

She remembered that day. She had almost peed on herself because she was so afraid. Her mother had comforted her, and had said that many children felt it that way. That they were so nervous they didn’t know what to do with themselves. “I know how it is. I meet new students every year, and I feel like that every time,” her mother had said.

“You do?” Angela had been really shocked to hear that. Anna was a teacher at a different school than the one Angela and Brian went to.
“Just try think about the good things. Think about getting new friends, about learning new things. It’s not as scary as you think. I bet that your new teacher is more nervous than half her new class together.”

Her mother had been right. Her teacher had seemed a bit nervous. But in the end, Angela found out that it hadn’t been as bad as she first had thought it would be. It had actually been fun. She smiled, and turned the page.

I finally solved the problem. it have happened before, but I totally forgot that I had to save the textfile another way on his computer...

Angela continued looking at the pictures, and reading the poems and the written text. She smiled, laughed, and thought back on all the good times she and her family had shared together.

Then, she realised that it was near to the end of the book. Not the end of the book itself, but the end of what her mother had put in it.  
A picture of their whole family was there, on one of the last pages. Her mother still had her hair, although it apparently was starting to go thinner, and Liam was newly born.

She remembered that day better than anything else. It was one of those rare times after Liam was born, that they had taken a family photo. The last one, she realized.
Angela swallowed. The tears were back.

A short line was written right under the picture. Of all the things in the memory book, this was the thing that made her the happiest, and saddest.

Just then, someone knocked on her door. Angela dried away a tear. “Come in.”
It was her father that opened the door. “Are you OK, Angela?”

“Now, I am.”
“I see you found it,” he said, and nodded towards the book.

“To be honest, I didn’t understand everything until now. For the first time since mom died, I feel like smiling again.” Angela studied the book in her hands, and stroked the picture of all of them. “Mom just reminded me what is really important. It’s not good to just remember the bad things. We gave to remember the good things that has happened, dad. Not the bad ones.”

coincidences seems to happen all the time with me. like for two or three days ago when I saw a magazine lying on the kitchen table. on the front page, I saw a heading that said something like "sacrified her life for her son", with a picture of a woman holding a new born baby in her hands. I got curious, and opened the magazine to find out more.

guess who got really surprised when she saw that the baby's name was Liam, and that he was born a bit too early.

and even more surprised when I saw that his mother had had cancer, and died after the baby was born because she didn't want to abort the child so she could get the treatment she needed. (Anna, anyone?)

even more surprised when I saw that she had three more children - one that was 10, one that was 8, and one that was around 2 - but all of them were girls, though. (angela was ten, Brian was 9 and Alice was around two...)

it's not the exact same story, but.... well, it does have its likeness to the one I wrote about Anna...

to come to think about now after i read what you just wrote. i just rememberd my cousin who had breast cancer and she was pregant with twins. and she didn't want to go through treatment or surgery til after the twins were born.. and sometime after i guess that after she was just about done with treatment she died leaving her twins with no mom.... the twins names courtney and austin not only did she leave the twins she had 2 other children

Coming back to school was, in a way, good. Lately school had been a place where she could forget things – even just for a few moments every day. She also looked forward to see her friends again. Now, however, things were much easier than they had been. The inspiration that had completely disappeared when her mother died had finally returned.
“We’ll start with something light, since it’s the first day back,” the teacher said, after she had greeted them.

I'm not sure yet, Elpemmy. Real life is creeping up on me right now, so there's not always much room for playing sims. plus, I'm not always the best in finishing up stuff, especially when I'm writing stories... I'm planning some stories - and I've started picture taking for two of them, but since I installed FT, I moved out the game I used so they're not finished yet.  I also like to finish the writing before taking pictures, and right now I'm a bit stuck in the storytelling.

*sniffles* I need a vacation!!!

well, my stories for some reason almost never have happy endings. I thought it was about time that it happened :D

Oh my gosh you scared me! I almost started crying when I saw the little girl in the hospital bed, then I did shed a tear when I saw the grave. Sneaky! I'm so glad she made it, and that her children made it. Do a few motherlodes and buy those children everything they desire in your game for the rest of their Sims lives. ;) Great story, thank you for sharing it Raven.

Raven I love this story! Now I need to go and read Anna's Diary! lol but wow what a great story it made me cry... mostly the Poem... Im so saveing that for future use if you dont mind.

...And now I'm crying even harder. Bawling, really. I was so scared when her daughter got leukemia - she looked so much like Anna. Amazing story, thousands and thousands of stars and thumbs up (and tissues for everyone who reads this because they're necessary).

This is one damn good story, if you don't mind me saying.  I haven't really been this close to crying since Pay it Forward. (although it doesn't help that the song I'm listening to is somewhat depressing lyrically, and that my grandfather died of cancer a little over 4 years ago)  Great job, and yeah- you were successful in tricking me into thinking that Angela's daughter died.

When I saw the grave, I was sure her daughter had died. You really scared me there. You write some really amazing stories.
