Title: Application has crashed message since installing freetime
Post by: simpleprincess on August 17, 2008, 03:41:32 pm
Ive reinstalled freetime and added pets but when I went to do the cooking contest, after i won and was going to re-enter,a message comes up saying this application has crashed, the sims 2 will now terminate!,I always seem to get this messages whenever I have freetime installed.

Ive checked through my downloads with clean installer and no red flags.

Ive freed up 10 gb of hard drive space whereas pre-freetime and pets I had about 2gb and no problems,I had everything else installed as well up to bon voyage except though  ikea, glamour and kitchen and bath packs.

I dont think ive installed the offical freetime patch if this would help?

Could it be the simenator mods? for some reason after downloading them nethier inteen or insim are showing up in the game, just my downloads.

Could it be that I installed both mods before installing freetime? even though I didnt play that game until I installed freetime and pets in that order.?

Im so completely baffled.

I have a decent graphics card.1.8 ghz cpu. 512 of ram. 10 gb left of hard drive space after installing everything.lol.

For some reason this problem always happens when ive got my freetime game installed. ive never been able to find out whats wrong.this time round I was able to play a lot for a lot longer. This problem seems to occur at community lots overall. This was maxis community lot that I visted.

Sorry for the essay,if anybody can help, offer tips i would be most grateful,id rather try to combat the problem rather than admit defeat again and uninstall freetime.:-P

Hi^^
This happened to me a few days ago, the log said 'ACCESS VIOLATION' and I got the same message when it crashed - only mine crashed when trying to adopt a pet.
EA told me to just reinstall, so I did, and that worked.

Hopefully someone else has some better and less tedious solutions than a reinstall, but reinstalling worked for me =)

Hello

I know what your going through when i see that freetime crash i have to reinstall it as well but here is a tip try doing a disk cleanup see following pictures

next you can do a disk defragmentation witch can eliminate the old files see picture

Good luck and hope this can help you

Have you tried completely moving your Downloads folder out of your C:\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2 folder, and then playing and testing that part of the game out?  It's a possibility you may have a mod hidden in there somewhere... and believe it or not, Clean Installer will sometimes skip over highlighting certain hacks in red.

Try that and see what happens after doing that.  If it doesn't do it, you may have to remove all of your mods and make sure each of them are updated accordingly to the EPs you have.

Thank you for all your help!. How does it explain the siminators not showing up?
I dont know how to get the disk cleanup window to show up ethier? im worried doing that might erase my downloads though!.

It seems alot of people have had problems with freetime crashing at the cook off community lot!.

Ive since installed a freetime patch if it helps.

It might be that ive not turned off background tasks?

Could it be installing pets after installing freetime?

Could the problem even be the mixture of eps I have are both american ones and british ones?

I think all my downloads are up to date,I make sure I only download things for the exps I have already.

Disk cleanup can be accessed through Start > Accessories > SystemTools > Disk Cleanup or by typing cleanmgr in the Run window.^^

Even if you install EPs in the wrong order they are supposed to sort themselves out, but that doesn't always seem to happen, so that could be an issue :S

My game experienced this issue but I had installed them in the correct order.^^

The FreeTime patch is really iffy.

Backround tasks can hinder gameplay. Turn them off. Anti-Virus/FireWall, you name it. I always turn mine off. Even though I don't have to. It's a habit I picked up years ago.

I've always installed my disks in the order they came out. Never once had a problem. But, I own only up to OFB.

I really don't think the American/British disks would present a problem. I could be wrong on that one.

Im going to start tearing my hair out with my game lol.!!!
Im determined ton get to the bottom of it

Ok I disk fragmented.
disabled background tasks.
played game
ok in home lot
second I enter the food contest the message comes again

I think that food challenge doesnt like custom sims?
it was a custom sim entering the contest.

I wonder if it would help to copy and paste all my downloads onto here, maybe someone can see something I dont?

Try entering the the food contest with a Sim that isn't custom made and see what happens.

Have you removed all of your downloads to try the food contest?  If it works without crashing, then we can narrow the problem down to a mod/CC.

If on the other hand it doesn't work, download and install the FT patch.  The word "iffy" is being bandied about with no links to where the "iffiness" is talked about.  FT has had 3 patches done to it, and the 3rd patch that is available at the TS2 website seems pretty solid.

Will removing the downloads erase my familes and their houses? im a bit scared to do it. I can move them all into another folder? for eg I have a the frell family in a custom lot,im worried they will be gone?

im going to try today to go the cook off thing with a maxis sim. see what happens.

Its odd cos I can play for more than an hour on the home lots, but theres trouble in the community lots.

My custom sim married to a maxis sim so ill take him to the cook off see what happens.

ive already downloaded the freetime patch.

Any idea why the simenators are not showing up? [ insim and inteen]
theryre the freetime versions.

Removing all downloads shouldn't remove the lots, they just won't be in the lot bin anymore. Families will have no custom content on them and will be replaced with Maxis skins, eyes, hair etc.
If you save your family they will stay with Maxis defaults, so you might not want to save your game after removing the custom content to check.^^

So once put back, will it be as before? I worked so hard on my "hood"

If you haven't saved on any lots when the content has been removed, when the content is back in the folder everything should be as it was before the content was removed ^^

The lots in the Lot Bin will still be in that location, as installed lots are installed into the Teleport and LotCatalog folders.  So no worries.  ;)

o.o *gasps* Ive installed lots from here ,modthesims 2 and sims 2 website into my downloads folder? Is that not good?
Could that be another reason why things are messing about?

Im about to go off and try a maxis sim on that cook challenge, ill be back in a minute...

Like I said up above, your lots in the bin will be fine.  They aren't installed into your Downloads folder, just into your Teleport and LotCatalog folders.  Any custom content/recolors/sims that have come with the lots, though, will be installed into your Downloads folder.

(As for downloading lots from the official website... if you don't have Sims2Pack Clean Installer (http://sims2pack.modthesims2.com), you're doing some pretty risky stuff.  Never install lots from there without checking to see if they include rogue hacks of the sort, like ones with 32 numbers and letters as the file name with no specific catalog/type placement.  They could ruin your gameplay experience.  ;))

*wails* I do have alot of stuff with numbers and letters? is it possible for me to copy and paste my downloads here so you can go through them with me?

As cooky as it sounds, mine did that at first. so I did all of the reinstall, remove CC etc then added only 5 CC items at a time, loaded my favorite lot which was crashing, finally I got all of the CC back and no crash.

Maybe FT is just wacky about CC and wants it slowly? (shrug)

Im starting to lose patience with it. I went to the desiderita neighbourhood, went in to the joque family, all maxis content and it crashed almost straight away now. :/

DarkA I might try what you suggested, but ive got so much I dont know what is what.

Can I copy and paste my downloads here so someone could go through it with me???? *sniff*

"32 numbers and letters as the file name with no specific catalog/type placement"

The files with the letter and numbers ,I have a lot of those, here is 1 of loads what I will type here, see if anybody thinks they are bad.

oaoc54boece6a5d6fc80f9f70a0b4e7b.package  802 kb package file  [ a date and a time next to it.

Theres tons more like the above in my downloads folder.

How many downloads do you have?

Title: Application has crashed message since installing freetime
Post by: simpleprincess on August 19, 2008, 01:58:35 pm
Tons.Like alot.
Ive just moved the whole lot into a temp folder named "nattis downloads for freetime."

so now what ?

Ive just played freetime with no custom content and downloads and its working fine.

so ive ethier got something thats causing it to play up
or too many downloads for my computer to cope with.

Suggestions in other threads like this were:

Split downloads into halves, then add each half separately [so add one half then check if it stills works, then take it out and add the other and see if it still works]
Then keep splitting the problem half in two until you get to the problem file.

Another was to delete all 32 character files because they may be unwanted files [as mentioned earlier in this thread by Tenshii~Akari :S]

So it wont affect/ruin/mess up/delete my game to delete everything that has that in it then?

Theres rather alot of them with that in it. *gasp*

It's up to you, they might be files you want, but there's no way to tell when they're named like that and have no type allocated :S There's a chance that they might be files you didn't intentionally download, but there's also a chance it will be something you want.

It won't mess up your game, but if it's custom content that you want like hair etc, it won't be on your sims anymore.

They are bad.  Don't even bother to type the names here and ask.  Just delete.

My opinion is, that Free Time is a "dangerous" EP, which clashes with many previous CC/downloads, even if they pass the check of the Clean Installer.

My friend has an enormous number of glitches, since she installed it. After seeing her glitched pictures - I decided not to buy this EP.

You have one or more corrupted or incompatible files in your downloads folder since you didn't get the crash when you played without the downloads folder.

If you want to identify the file(s) causing the problem and only delete those (not all 32 character unnamed files are "bad"), then you need to take a systematic approach to find them. I've got 25,000+ files in my download folder and have had to do this several times.

Just remember, while doing this without all of your files in the downloads folder to NOT SAVE the game when exiting when the game doesn't crash.

As others have recommended, take half your downloads and move them out to a different folder - call it "suspect01" or something. Run the game, see if it crashes. If no crash, then move the files in your downloads folder to a folder on your desktop called "checked01" ("checkedxx" files being files which didn't cause the game to crash). If it did crash, take half of the original files and move them into "suspect02" and try again with the files still in the downloads folder.

Keep taking half of your "suspect" files and try the game with just them in downloads. (By keeping the "checkedxx" files out of downloads once you know they work, you reduce the loading time of the game.)

It's a long process, but it keeps you from deleting files that are valid files and may contain content you want. If you eventually try every "suspectxx" folder - even after you identify the first file causing a crash, you will find other corrupt files if you have more than one.

It is slightly possible that it a conflict between two files in your downloads folder causing the crash but let's hope that's not the problem -- that is even more difficult and time-consuming to identify (and is rarely the case).

Good Luck!

I managed to play for all afternoon and evening before it crashed on me again at a custom wedding lot. loading some of the communitys took ages,it would go to a blue screen with an hour glass. I took a custom sim out, I had no problems at nightlifes londoste resturant though, that loaded fine, played fine and was able to go home fine. I did go to ameilias closet first before going onto the wedding lot. so sstrange.

Ill attempt the downloads thing tommorow.

What operating system? Vista alone takes almost 1gb of ram to run.  What is the graphic card?  Do you have dedicated memory on it?  Are you playing with all the ep's and sp's?  I help out on the bbs and the general feeling is that for all ep's you need at least 2 gb's of ram to make game run right.  The cpu is to low for 512 gb ram.  Plus Bon Voyage and Freetime have memory leaks that eat up your resources.  In addition the longer you have played and the bigger your hoods, again more resources.  You also play with a lot of cc(me too) and that takes resources.

EA's minimum requirements to play the game have always been to low and more and more are starting to have crashing problems.

I just bought this computer from ebay, will it be ok for it?
Was it a good choice? good price?
im giving him the money wednedsay!
is that wise?
would love your opinion!.

Right now I can only play for half an hour before crashing. Your all sure I wont lose much deleteing those 32 character files? im too scared to do it.lol.
Just wondering if it will solve it all by getting a much better computer as above or one very simmilar that ive found.

80 gb hard drive is small. I have 160 gb with 2gbs ram and I know it isn't enough. Just with basics, windows xp and sims2.. I only have 1/4 of my hard drive space free.
