Have you built an apartment with AL?

I've built a few...but then I had to reformat my computer (literally two hours after installing AL :(). I'm working on one right now, as well. I'll post pictures when it's done :)

will c+p from the other thread
whenever i try to open it, a window comes up that says it's deleting files from C:\User\bally\AppData\Roaming. but the files are 0 bytes? its really frustrating cos the window won't go away even when i cancel it. tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that didn't work either..

I've tried to build IN an apartment but the choices are limited !

My sim has is own house. Is there a trick to change it into an apartment and have roomates to come and live there ?

you have to rezone the lot just like a dorm. Also just like a dorm once the lot is rezoned and you exit back to the neighborhood, if you go back in you can't change most of the build mode options. The only ones availble are, wallcoverings, floors and the like. Also you prob don't want to rezone the lot while there are sims on it. They might dissappear.

Before you move sims in while your in build mode

Ctrl-Shift-C

changelotzoning apartmentbase

Also for pricing options

changelotclassification (low-middle-high)

When you build your apartment dont use the walk over wall seperator things people use to seperate the carpet and tile. It seems to mess up the apartment and counts it as a common area. Then you cant move ANYTHING! grrrrr .... I found that out the hard way lol!

Well I just spent a good 3 hrs building a nice place, 7 apartments etc, fully furnished - all 7...
Then zoned it, everything seems cool,
but as soon as anyone moves in all my hard work furnishing disappears, the basic stuff stays, like the fridge and stove, but the rest, like beds & TVs etc *poof*.

They reappear once i evict person A from the lot.
But it sucks. According to the PDF "tutorial" on the sims2.com you should be able to furnish the place COMPLETELY and have sims move into a FULLY FURNISHED place. Just seems a total rip-off.

Also, I play with testing cheats enabled, always have. The ONE door provided for apartment entrances causes a jump error with TT enabled, so for the first time I can't even play the way im used to or enjoy.

AL is going down as a stinker in my books so far.

Someone said if you right-click on the door with boolprop on you can retain the furnishings.  I guess it has an option.

Actually it's Shift-Click.

I personally hope Apartments get their own section on this site. You know, under the "Lots" section there's the Residential and Community lots subsections. I'd rather see Apartments get their own subsection than to just be sorted under Residential.

And thanks for the info, I've been trying to figure out how to build apartments all day. I may end up uploading to the site for the first time in my life.

I haven't tried to build one yet.  Frankly, I think it's rather obnoxious that EA didn't make an effort to make building apartments easier.  You know when you add a new lot, it asks you if it's commercial or residential?  Why couldn't they have added an "Residential - House" and "Residential - Apartment" option there?  It's going to make players who don't like getting into cheat codes not be as pleased with apartments.

EA mentioned in the AL readme file that beaches and apartments don't mix.

Well, it's going alright but one big snag right now: I had intended to house 6 seperate sims in an apartment building. Spent bunches of time building this really nice apartment building with lots of amenities, looked up the cheat to re-zone it and had my sims begin moving in and I found out only 4 playable sims can live in the building. :( However, I may be happy if I can duplicate the building and house 3 in each and let the rest fill up with other neighbors.

Oh, nice one!

That explains why I always get the message "invalid lot" when I want to rezone. Takes a whole lot of fun out of custom apartments, since I wanted them to be on the beach.

Another goody I didn't know of. Guess I save my time then, since it seems rather pointless to create apartments.

Sometimes I wonder about the thought process of the developers. Beach Condo? Who needs that.´And, four Sims are more than enough. Yeah, right. Everyone needs an apartment when they are able to control less Sims than in a single house.

Household limits in apartment units are the same as on residential lots.  Any combination of sims and pets up to 10 combined with a maximum of 6 pets or 8 sims.  With this limitation, only 4 apartment units may be occupied by playable sims.  You can have more units, but any over 4 have members of the social groups move in.

I've been able to build and play apartments and am now testing shops on the ground floor.  I tried one variant with a restaurant and a shop.  The restaurant worked fine but I kept having trouble with the shop operating like it should.
What I did was create the building as a residence first, then change it to apartmentbase.
I understand that if you build first in community mode and then change the zoning to apartment base the shops will work normally.
One thing I have not been able to do is advertise for roommates!
I think my newspaper is somehow involved.  I haven't been able to find a job via the newspaper since before Vacation came out.

There are a least 20 uploaded apartments here on insimenator under residential in the comunity download section. Hope this helps.

TatyerB, did you use the specific apartment front door for the apartments? Apparently you have to use a specific apartment door to designate that unit as an apartment.

I followed the tutorial on SimWiki and it worked like a charm for me! Built four units, all of them up & renting!

I guess that explains why I haven't been able to build an apartment succesfully (even though I've used changelotzoning apartmentbase) I guess I should try "changelotclassification"
Thanks!

I build an apartment building, more like simplexes, it took me forever to furnish each one beautifully. I got all excited and moved my first family in, and wolla half of the furniture did not show. Only bathrooms and kitchen stuff showed the rest were gone. I was upset about it and refurnished the place with my family in it. Then I went to knock on the neighbour's door and guess what ??? He had all the nice furniture, that is so unfair. I bet ya it is because he is a NPC... lucky bugger

I also found that beachlots don't mix with apartments when I could for the life of me not put a roof on an apartment building :(

~simaholic--you can rent the apartment furnished.  Have boolProp on and, I can't remember exactly which, either shift click on the door or ctrl click.  In my game it is an option all the time.  Not sure if it is from the Insim or what, but I have it without boolProp on.

I got AL . The first time I played with,  I had the  apartment mailbox .  Now, the AL mailbox deasapeared and I have only the residential mailbox. The residential mailbox is a custom content and owerwrite the maxis one .
How I can fix that?

Thanks
