"Fuzzy" might be the way to describe this very short, very curly style. Actually, the word "style" might be pushing it, as there's no amount of hair-care products that can make it do anything it doesn't want to do.



I needed hair like this for a sim version of my partner posted here, but couldn't find it anywhere. So I took a Maxis mesh nobody ever seems to use, gave it a curly texture, and added a fade on the sides and in the back. I was on a roll, so I made version in brown, red, and blond as well.

This style was inspired by the Afro Fade by DLMulsow. That woman always has something cooking! Thanks, DL!

These might not be traditional accessories, but or your accident-prone sims, Band-Aids are indespensible. There are four in this pack: a large one on the forehead, small ones on the cheek and the chin, and one of those cute little round ones on the jawline.

Unless you have accident-prone sims, you won't need these all the time. But every now and then your favorite sim walks into a door, is beaten by a disapproving older woman, or gets into a fistfight with the mascot from the opposing team. That's when you need these realistic black eyes. I used a real-life shiner as the model for these beauties, which appear on the left eye, right eye, or both. If things really got out of hand for your sim, there's also a taped-up broken nose framed by two black eyes.

These black eyes are filed under eyeliner, so you can use them with any other kind of makeup. (You wouldn't want to put on mascara with a shiner anyway.) They look good with all skin tones, including the darker ones.

We all know how it starts: a few little lines around the eyes. No big deal. right? But then there are a few more... Well, you get the picture.

Since getting older is a gradual process, I decided to make a set of aging masks for your sims who are approaching middle age. These masks are intended to be used in a sequence, so your sims appear to be aging naturally. The "light" mask has just a few wrinkles around the eyes. The "medium" mask adds a few more, plus some creases around the mouth. The "heavy" mask deepens these lines, and adds more everywhere.

These masks, found under "costume makeup," can be used with all other types of makeup. They work well with both adult and elder sims. They can be used with all skin tones, but they make the biggest impact on light and medium complexions.

Let's face it, we're all getting older. But our sims aren't! Their kids some home from college, and it's hard to tell who's who. Adult sims all look about 20 until they suddenly turn into white-haired elders.

Not any more! These men's hairstyles -- all from the base game -- have been recolored to add a bit of gray at the temples. Now your male sims can age a bit more gradually, so it's not a shock when they enter their golden years. Only the adult hair is recolored, making a nice transition from dark-headed young adults to snowy elders.

These recolors are dedicated to our own DLMulsow, whose belief that men look good with a "little snow on the roof" inspired me to make a few examples. Thanks, DL!

Throw away those dark glasses! You earned those dark circles under your eyes -- by staying up to watch Leno, studying all night for that exam, or pretending that spring break lasts well into your forties -- so show them off!

These three sets of dark circles are part of a series of facial features designed to give sims a little more character. These show up on all skins tones, but make the biggest impact on the lighter ones. You'll find them under blushes. They can be worn with other types of makeup, including other blushes.

I wanted some realistic birthmarks, so I decided to make a set. These are dark brown, as opposed to black, and have edges that blend nicely into any skintone. You'll find them under blushes. They can be worn with other types of makeup, including other blushes.

I gave you writer Susan Sontag, so I felt like I also had to give you photographer Annie Leibowitz. Although the two women were longtime companions, they never spoke about their relationship. It was only after Sontag died that Leibowitz told a reporter: "Call us 'lovers.' I like 'lovers.' You know, 'lovers' sounds romantic. I mean, I want to be perfectly clear. I love Susan."

Leibowitz is the world’s most famous photographer. She joined the staff of Rolling Stone soon after it launched, and her photos -- especially the famous image of a naked John Lennon embracing Yoko Ono -- helped define the magazine. Today she is known for provocative shots in Vanity Fair, including a nude Demi Moore taken when she was more than eight months pregnant.

Leibowitz is one of only two living photographers to have an exhibit in Washington D.C.’s National Gallery. She’s been a cartoon on The Simpsons. A wax image of her appears in Madame Tussaud’s in New York City. In this day and age, how many artists are celebrities?

Here’s writer Susan Sontag, one of the leading intellectuals of the ‘60s and ‘70s. She’s an odd choice for this site, I know. But I was making a man’s hairstyle with gray temples and I wondered how hard it would be to make Sontag’s trademark lock of gray hair in the middle of her forehead. (I attached a photo of her below.)



But wait, there’s more! In addition to the sim version of Sontag, I’m also including the black-and-white portrait of her by Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd that hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. You can see it behind the desk in the pics below.

Who is Susan Sontag, anyway? Although she wrote novels and plays, it was her essays that put Sontag on the literary map. Her celebrated essay “Notes on Camp” (1964) found the value in both high and low art. And “Illness as Metaphor" in 1978 and the follow-up “AIDS and its Metaphors” in 1988 helped change the way people looked at those suffering from terminal diseases. It was such a disease, leukemia, that claimed her life in 2004.

Interesting note: Although Sontag was open about being bisexual, obituaries in the New York Times and other publications did not mention her decade-long relationship with photographer Annie Liebowitz. It was Leibowitz who revealed this poorly kept secret in a 2006 article in Newsweek.

Fun fact: the most famous type of match is called máscara contra mascara, or mask versus mask. Two masked wrestlers compete, and the loser is unmasked by the winner. The longer a wrestler goes without being unmasked, the more famous he becomes. A few of the most famous were never unmasked during their careers.

Here’s El Tormento, who recently won second place in the Macho Man contest. He’s just starting out in his career, trying to eke out a living for himself, his wife Marisol, and heir son Jesús. He hasn’t been unmasked, but we’re giving you a little peek at what he looks like…

Little-known fact about lucha libre -- the names of these masked wrestlers are often passed down from generation to generation. Rey Misterio, a popular wrestler in the U.S., started his career as Rey Misterio Jr. He was trained by his uncle, Rey Misterio Sr.

This is Espectro, whose stage name translates as “The Specter.” It’s the same name his father used to use when he was in the ring more than 20 years ago. He’s known for his flamboyant style, especially his turquoise cape he wears when entering the arena. But in matches he means business.

Lucha Libre! If you like Espectro, try El Fénix!

In Mexico, every town is plastered with posters for lucha libre -- literally meaning “free fight.” These free-for-all wrestling matches aren’t for the timid. These battles between masked men almost always end up spilling into the audience, where chairs go flying and spectators run for cover.

The luchadores often don’t reveal their real names, preferring to use stages names like the Blue Demon or Man of a Thousand Masks. El Santo, one of the most renowned wrestlers, ended up being buried in his mask.

I thought I’d introduce you to a few of the men whose masked faces are on the posters in my sim town:

This is El Fénix, meaning “The Phoenix.” (He did rise from the ashes, coming back as this character after being unmasked in his final bout as El Matador.) The crowds call this young man Flaco -- meaning “Slim” -- because he lacks the girth of most wrestlers. But he’s wiry and strong, and more often than not wins out over bigger opponents.  And his tattoo, the sacred heart, has won more than a few hearts of the ladies.

In real life I work as a travel writer, so I thought I'd introduce you to my self sim by showing you a few places that have been on the itinerary over the past year or so. Zev and I took along the trusty Instamatic -- the old-fashioned kind with a roll of film that gets ruined about every other time I try to load the damn thing -- and got a few good shots.

My secret shame was that I was a travel writer who had never been to Italy, so for my last birthday Zev took me to Florence. Everything about our room was miniature, even the window, but it did look out at a gorgeous church tower.


In Barcelona, this little cafe sat beside a sunny terrace. The owner didn't seem to mind dragging a table outside so we could soak up the sun (and slurp down a bottle of cava, the local sparkling wine). Here's me, reading a travel guide, of course.


Zev thought this shot was hilarious. In Antigua, a lovely colonial-era city in Guatemala, we couldn't find the hotel we had booked. (The 50-pound backpacks didn't make the search any easier.) I was cranky and ready to give up when the owner (that's him in the back) found us and brought us to the hotel, which was less than a block away.

These two guys are brothers -- fraternal twins, but if you look closely you'll see that they are very much individuals. They have different color eyes, different shaped noses and brows. Justin is the serious one, as you might expect from the older brother. Jason is a bit of a goofball.

I grew up in Florida, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that my sims seem to love the water as much as I do. When I did the photo shoot of Antonio a few days ago, Trent kept "accidentally" walking into the frame. I took a couple of shots of him, just to get him off my back, and it turned out that he was pretty darn photogenic. Who knew?
