Walking wounded
Paulie sat down on his couch, in his lovely 4+ bedroom home. But it didn’t feel like home. I wonder where Maddie is?
Maddie was his wife of 18 years. Married fresh out of college for her, a degree in teaching, and fresh out of the police academy for him. Paulie, or Detective Paul Burt, had been working homicides for 10 years. Hundreds, no, thousands of deaths Paulie had to bear on his shoulders, including his own three children. Except they weren’t murdered. The night Paulie and Maddie’s fourth child, Toby, was born; a tree branch caught on fire in a storm and fell on their 4+ bedroom home.Sherry, 8 had been adopted from one of Maddie’s students. Clarissa 12 was an orphan who Paulie met while working her parent’s murders, and Hayden their biological son. Paulie looked at the clock 11:39pm. Maddie is never home this late! Madeline Charlotte Avi was her maiden name. Maddie was just what her friends called her. To her students it was Mrs. Burt. Maddie worked as a high school French teacher, since that was her first language. Paulie had met Maddie at a party 19 years ago. She was a beautiful foreign creature to small town Paulie Burt. He didn’t even go to that college. A friend of his, and now colleague, Matthew Picasso’s girlfriend Jessica went to that school.
Maddie had befriended Jessica as an attempt to join in on American college life. Jessica introduced the two shy people. She thought that they were a match made in heaven. And they were, for the past 11 years, until their kids died that fateful night.
Just then the door open and Maddie came in. In the spur of the moment
Paulie said “Hello my darling!” Hoping to spark a flame in their dying fire of love.
“Hey.” She said sadly. Paulie knew why. “The doctors say we should just pull the plug, on Toby.” Toby had been in a coma for the last 5 years after a drunk driver smashed into Maddie and Toby in the car. Maddie had been pregnant; the worst that happen to her was losing that baby. Her third miscarriage. Toby had been hit the worst. The driver, Scotty DaMartin was in and out of jail in one year. Paulie thought he should have gotten 25 years for the death of the baby, but some legal loophole said that the baby wasn’t really a person.
Maddie was sick and tired of Paulie’s moping. Maddie was sick and tired of him saying “let’s wait another year and see id he wakes up.” To her that translated to “you go to the hospital everyday and watch our son suffer and slowly drift into death.” Paulie hadn’t been to the hospital in 2 years. I don’t care if he says no. I’m signing thoughs papers. Maybe tomorrow. She hoped he hadn’t noticed her grab her purse, which she usually left by the door, and head to the bathroom. “What are you doing?” He asked grapping a hold of her purse. Just as he did it fell to the floor and out drop what she had been hiding. “Is that?” He said. “Yeah. It is.” she said.
Paulie was astonished to discover that his wife had a pregnancy test in her purse. Could she be… before he could finish that thought she grabbed and tried to excuse it “I’ve just been sick in the morning, and I haven’t had my period at first I thought it was just because of stress but…” Paulie wasn’t listening. Could she be? Is it mine? Of course it’s mine! It’s Maddie! “Paulie I didn’t want to worry you, if I’m not! Which is probably true because…” It took use 3 years to have Hayden, 5 for Toby. And once for this little bugger… Maddie was rambling but all the sudden Paulie jumped up and said “what are you waiting for? Go! Go! GO!” they ran up the stairs to their bathroom.
Paulie sat on the tub, and Maddie started reading the instructions. After two long minutes she looked at Paulie and said…..
