Para las texturas uso el Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 (viejito pero poderoso, y mucho más fácil que el photoshop que no entiendo ni J).  Hay más recientes pero pasaron a manos de Corel. Para los modelos 3D o meshes uso el Milkshape, que es el que más soporte tiene en la comunidad. Es súper sencillo, ideal para empezar, yo empezé con ese. Con el 3d Studio no sé ni mover un vértice. Creo que también se puede usar blender y otros pero nunca los usé.
