166  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Discussion / Sims freezing to death in CAS on: March 31, 2007, 12:44:30 pm
My CAS chrashes, too. Bot not from freezing. At least I never saw a sim doing weird freezing animations. It started when both BS and CAS wouldn't start at all. After deleting the SavedSims, BS worked again, yay.

But with CAS it's very wierd: I can go in now, but after a couple of minutes, the game just terminates (yes, that infamous error). When I'm really fast, take a premade sim and just give them a name and personality and save and go back to the neighbourhood, I may be lucky and have a new sim or pet.

But when I try to go back into CAS to make another "quick sim", game crashes immediately. What I tried:

Deleting groups.cache, accessory.cache and cigen.package
SavedSims were already deleted aside from a few I want to get into the game.
Seeing that I had a writing protection on some folders, I reset all attributes for the whole downloads folder.
I took out ALL of my hacks and mods.
I didn't take out clothes and makeup and stuff, because that's just the stuff I need in CAS. Also, it didn't make a difference when I took out the whole downloads folder when even BS wouldn't start anymore.

Now I run out of ideas.
Do I just have to wait for a patch that may mess up other things again?

Edit: game also terminates while playing, but only once in a while. I save often...

My specs: I have all EP's, no stuff packs.
Computer: Athlon XP 3200+ 2,2 GHz, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6800, drivers up to date.

The Sims 2 after installing Pets or Seasons EPs uses pixelshader 3.0 technology, not pixelshader 2.0

Oh......!
How does that explain the fish on the one lot? LOL.

Anyway, I still won't go and buy a new video card. Because that would make no sense, I'd have to build a comlpetely new machine, no more upgrading this one. And so it has to wait until there's money... which can take a while...

I looked around in my graphic rules file and found that for my card useshaders is on (true) by default. And I happen to know that the card supports shaders version 2. Still it behaves funny in the Sims, lol. As I mentioned before, I can see fish on one particular lot, but not on any others. I simply made my peace with that for now. As long as I see my sim's dresses in their full beauty. Smiley

If you do not want to try different things to make your game work, that is up to you.

Look again at my last post, which you completely quoted, by the way, and see that I DID try that. And that it didn't do any different.
And I don't have a Mac. Wink

And how am I able to build asian buildings, if "boolprop constrainfloorelevation" false" is not supposed to work? One uses the capitals for better readability.

By the way: I also tried the capitalized version of the shader cheat. Makes no difference at all. Just another of the endless dephts of sim mysteries...

Nvidia cards evidently suck for Sims2, which is why I chose a Radeon for my upgrade.  There have been endless reports of people with Geforce and other Nvidia cards having issues, so I wouldn't recommend purchasing further cards from them unless you aren't big into TS2.

See, I've heard that very same thing about Radeon cards...
On a different thought: who writes a posting in a forum just to inform the other players, that their card works fine? Nobody. They post only when they have trouble...

For the fish, you can try "boolprop UseShaders true" and you will see fish in the tanks and ponds, but from what I've read, outdated video cards aren't meant to see them...

I don't think a GeForce 6800 is so very outdated as of now. Not when I keep reading about people playing with GeForce2 or ooold Radeon cards.
I know about the cheat and it doesn't make my game crash, but it makes no difference: I have one lot with fish and dozens without fish. So really, not GeForce sucks, The Sims suck*. But that's common knowledge, isn't it?

*It may not seem so, but it's meant kinda lovingly, one has to admit to the faults even of loved ones, right? Wink
173  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Help / Where are my packaged lots? on: March 24, 2007, 07:06:56 pm
I find the packaged lots properly deposited in the PagagedLots folder. But when I install them by double clicking the Sims2.Pack file, I never find them in the lot bin in game.
174  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Help / A couple of things... on: March 24, 2007, 06:55:42 pm
Yeah, these issues have been discussed in the Sims 2 Seasons Chat forum.
It's the old InSim DEST that prevent you from catching fireflies/butterflies and fishing. The first workaround was using the InSim OBJ, but now there's a spanking new Seasons InSim and it works like a charm. Go get it! At once! LOL.

In my game I "mostly" don't SEE fish on my lots, but I can still fish. Very weird, because on one lot I see fish. First it was one, a couple (real time) days later there were even two. But not on any of my other lots. I also don't see stars or the moon. And no, I don't have a very old graphics card, I have a GeForce 6800 with up to date drivers (and I tried everything from beta drivers to omega drivers and lots inbetween...).
I even put my ingame resolution down from 1280x1024 to 1024x768 just to see the bumpmaps on my sims clothes! I guess I have to get a new machine to fully enjoy the performance munching monster that is The Sims2. Sigh.

The proper cheat is boolprop UseShaders true\false. Capitalization is required. where needed.

I wonder where that saying comes from! I heard that from the very first day of Sims2 base game. But why are the cheats working without capitalization, then? And I mean ALL cheats, without any exeption.
I can't see my fish, either (except on one lot, which is strange). I tried the shader cheat, too. I found out by accident, that even useshaders on/off are accepted. I know it's being processed somehow because it takes several seconds until the game responds again, which it does only with this particular cheat - and the cheat window doesn't expand, which is it's habit on entering a wrong cheat code.

Have you tried trash-canning everything in your lot bin in game and then reinstalling?

Nope. And I don't intend to because it would be too much effort to catalogue all the lots I've in the bin, finding the corresponding Sims2Pack files in a huge lot folder and then deleting and reinstalling them. There are also sitting lots in the bin that aren't even packed, just as backups for more difficult building projects. Plus I kinda don't see the point of deleting lots of stuff when I really want to ADD something. Okay, I see, the point being the weirdness that is The Sims. Wink

It is safe to rename the file and remove the extra extension though.

Of course it is safe. I'm not a complete idiot - just not a native speaker and therefore not everything I write is guaranteed to make any sense, lol.
However, it is a lot of work to change the extensions of a lot with lots of CC (sometimes it's the CC that I'm after, not the lot).

So that kinda contradicts your opinion on CC in a lot. Also, I guess you assumed that the lot in question was either something I downloaded or something I had inteded for uploading. Neither was the case. What I tried to do was pack a house with it's inhabitants to get quick clones of the sims. Since that little trick didn't work, I dared to clone the sims (made in CAS, not BS) with SimPe, though it's still the Pets version and I play Seasons. Fortunately that went very well without any complications.

But it still worries me, that I can't get lots back in my game that I packed myself. It's not only the lot with characters in it, but also empty lots.

Thanks, Micco. I found... something. Lot of numbers. Cheesy
But how do I get them to show up in my game again?
And can I somehow avoid the extended extensions (I mean the object installing, see above)?
178  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Help / Where are my packaged lots? on: March 24, 2007, 07:57:16 am
I know, they are in the PackagedLots folder. Smiley
The problem I'm having is to bring them back into the game. I install the Sims2Pack file, but I never find the lots I packaged myself in the houses bin. I use clean installer.

I am wondering where the files of the Sims2Pack folder go, anyway. They don't go into the downloads folder, from the teleport folder the stuff just seems to dissapear into thin air (even with downloaded lots that install just fine).

So I keep installing as follows: first I select the lot file only, which goes to teleport and then... poof! But at least it's in game (downloaded lot), even when I never get to organize it.

Then I select everything else I want to install, unpack it to a temporary folder with .package extension because I don't want to have the stuff all over the place or just vanish (and being in game nevertheless, just invisible to my eyes). Then I go into that folder and change the file names which now end in .package.package (cos there's no option to NOT put an additional extension to it). Then I put the files in the correct folders. I mean, what else are my over 100 folders for than for keeping some kind of order?

I guess, as long as I don't understand aforementioned mysteries, I'll never understand where my self packed lots go when I install them, either. Soooo, anyone care to enlighten me a little bit?

180  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Help / Swimming Pool Tool on: March 04, 2007, 06:31:05 am
The swimming pool tool is no more than a quarter round piece you just place on the ground, you don't drag it like the other pool tools. If the piece is red, the ground is out of bounds or otherwise occupied, just try moving it a bit.

And as for the RoofSlopeAngle, it's not a tool, either. It's a cheat. So bring up your cheat box by presing strg+shift+c at the same time. Then you can either type the cheat or type 'help', find the command and copy it (for me, sometimes typing doesn't do it, but copying will). Either way, in your cheat box has to be RoofSlopeAngle and a number from 15 to 75, the lower the number, the flatter the roof.

Have fun building!
