16  Simmers' Paradise / Tutorials / Body animations tips and tricks on: September 19, 2007, 03:43:57 pm
Dear people, I'm getting a crapload of animation requests and there's no way I can do it all!!

On the other side I'm SURE some of you would love to play with this, and are talented enough to come up with really good stuff and new ideas - and even if you aren't too sure about your skills, simple animations can be lots of fun!

You'll find a "tutorial" in the .rar file below; it isn't a step by step tutorial, those are listed below, but it should help you get quickly started if you have a basic knowledge of SimPE and Milkshape, and avoid common issues.
In the .rar file is also included a test object in which you'll just need to replace the animations with yours according to the instructions; 3 are regular animations, and 3 more are set in a loop.

Big thanks to Wes_H for allowing me to beta test his plugins and for his continued hard work, and to Beosboxboy for the html formatting Smiley

Needed tools

- a recent version of SimPE
- Milkshape 3D 1.8.1b (there are some issues with 1.8.1a)
- Wes_h's Unimesh and Animesh plugins.

Tutorials and must read

- the Milkshape help: for your first steps with animations in Milkshape, there's an easy to follow tutorial in the help files, which you can download from the Chumbalum site and just put in your Milkshape program folder. While the chosen example is simple, the explanations are quite complete. You don't need to bother with the part about setting up the skeleton and assigning the vertices since you're going to use Unimesh extracted meshes, so you can just jump to the "create a walk animation" part.

- the Animesh exporter program notes, for details about the use of the plug-in: there's no reason to rewrite here what Wes explains clearly and extensively.

While this is not immediately necessary, my advice is still to try John Brehaut's very well done sim animations tutorial that explains how to make your own test object (and skip the parts related to Miche's animation converter), and from there Echo's perfect BHAVs tutorials HERE and HERE ; you may find that new interactions aren't as daunting as you thought, and this will be an inspiration for more elaborate stuff.

For objects animations, please refer to Echo's tutorials HERE and HERE.
17  Retired Creators / The Post-Modernist Collection / Ladder with custom animations on: July 27, 2007, 01:47:39 pm
So, when testing Wes_h's Animesh exporter for Milkshape I asked myself what I wanted most in game (and that didn't seem freakishly difficult in terms of BHAVs and other real modding stuff!!)... Well, it seems that I'm happy with not much

Anyway, here's what I hope is a realistic enough alternative for the usual space saving stairs: stealth stairs, teleporters, and Targa's ladder stairs that were my favourite despite the lack of animations.

The base object was cloned from Targa's ladder stairs; the mesh was replaced but I kept his original footprint. So this ladder takes only 2 tiles, 1 for the ladder itself and 1 for the landing.

The custom animations are for all ages, except toddlers that can't use stairs anyway; all the locomotion types (sexy, depressed, angry...) will use the same "normal" animation, except the "run" locomotion for which the speed was doubled - pets and ghosts will just jump, at least for ghosts that makes sense

You'll find two different objects below:

- the "Marvine-ladder-animated" with 7 recolours : light wood, dark trashed wood, white, grey, black, blue, and a raw wood texture by Beosboxboy. The base object uses a warm medium wood texture, don't delete that one in game!

- the "Marvine-ladder-animated-metalClone", mesh and texture by my dear Beosboxboy, for an industrial look.

The packages were tested with Seasons and with base game only, I don't think the minor last minute changes will affect that.

Known issues:

- despite all the pains I took, the hands sometimes sink a little in the sides of the ladder, and this is more noticeable on the metal version which uses a slightly thicker mesh. Well it's not too bad with the fading...
- some animation overlays will look weird, like climbing upstairs when holding a baby, or when the sim turns to look at another sim; I didn't figure out how the priorities work so there's nothing I can do about that for now. It shouldn't happen very often anyway, unless you have the nursery upstairs Smiley
- when climbing down, the sim turns a little briskly to face the ladder and to walk away; this is the only workaround I found for a skeleton settings issue.
If you notice anything else, please let me know!

Policy: you're welcome to recolour, clone, modify with appropriate credit; please don't upload on pay sites or the Exchange.

Biggest thanks: to Wes_H of course, being his guinea pig was a priviliege , to Echo for answering my dumb questions, and to both Echo and John Brehaut for their great tutorials that got me started - and to Beosboxboy for putting up with my baby mad scientist moods and whining Smiley

And, of course, to all the people that made this possible with their tools, research and advice!

I can't claim this as my work: all the thanks must go to Ren (Louis at Simcribbling) for her gorgeous textures and friendly policy and to AllenABQ for sharing his perfect body hair layers Smiley

I just adapted, played around and added shadowing on the abs; I also was very careful to keep the texture quality high while not having huge files, so I chose to reduce the number of textures - all fitness states will use the same.

EDIT: stupid me!! I forgot to include the meshes, please download them at the bottom of the list!!
