16  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Help / Re: My game crashes, please help! on: May 19, 2010, 12:14:48 am
Are there any modded objects in Folder 5? Ones that regulate or encourage certain actions, such as a special sofa or bed? That might be a place to focus. This may NOT be the cause, but you might want to be particularly aware of these objects. They can cause a lot of trouble! In my case, it was a modded bed. It clashed with another modded object in another folder.

So ... 1, 2, 3 and 4 work OK without 5? I hope so ... your job would be easier then. Right now, though this is far from certain, it looks like certain items in Folders 3 and 5 might not be cooperating with each other, which is similar to what happened to me several months back. If folders 1 through 4 work fine without 5, then you would probably have to do the 50/50 with 5. Continue working with 5 with the other four folders in the game until you can narrow down the trouble item in 5.  Note which item it is and remove it to another part of your desktop or My Documents temporarily before deleting it. Then try the game without the item.

You might also want to try Folder 3 again with that one trouble file and narrow down which item was the troublemaker in that one, if you want to know what item in 3 had been giving you heartburn. It might be in that second half of 3. Then you might have to choose whether you want the Folder 5 item or the Folder 3 item, for instance. It doesn't look like you can have both. If the item in 5 wasn't important, I suppose you can skip this step.

Occasionally, you can look at the comments for that trouble item in 5 on the download site. If you go the item from here or Mod The Sims 2, for example,  you might find what happened if you read the comments. That's how I found out about one clashing item. If you're really lucky, the creator might have already known about the conflict and has a brand-new file for you to try. Make sure you have the right expansions/stuff packs for it.

It might not seem like this, but you are narrowing things down. Smiley

Didn't you say you had a crash in Folder 5? What happened with that?

You might also have what I call a "sleeper conflict". I just had a crash situation like that. I hadn't downloaded ANYTHING in the last few months except a few clothes. I hadn't played the game for a few months, either.

It turned out in my case that I had two conflicting files that independently worked fine, but if I put them both on the same lot, they crashed. Now I was lucky. I thought long and hard about what I did recently, and realized that I had put the two modded objects together in one household for the first time ever. I simply deactivated the old one using the Clean Installer, and there were no more crashes. As soon as I actually have time, I'll check all my lots in all my neighborhoods and make sure that the older modded object is gone off all lots (it should disappear completely, but I need to make sure, using several lots to check); this time, deactivating the new modded object. I will probably then delete the older object for good.

Downloads can be a tricky thing. Sad

I hope I'm understanding you correctly, because if I am, this might make your life easier, but ...

You say that there might be a problem concerning Folder 3?

Have you tried playing the game with the other four folders and NOT with Folder 3? Once again, don't save until you're sure those folders are not the troublemakers.

It doesn't matter what folder you put in what order when you're testing, as long as you do not save. If Folder 3 is the culprit, then you might just have to do the 50/50 in Folder 3, which is whole lot easier than doing it with all five folders! If it is Folder 3, most likely, something in there is not playing nice with something else in your game. And that might be a great start to finding out what's wrong.

If I'm mistaken, yes ... you can put in Folder 1 ... test for several minutes ... don't save ... put in Folder 2 ... test ... don't save, etc. But if you want to work backwards or try another folder first, I found that I didn't have any problems when I did that.

P. S. I too have folders that I mark as "testing", such as "Testhair", "TestObjects", "TestMods", etc. It does make it easier to pinpoint the culprits before I move them over to the proper folders.

And I had to change my last sentence. Sorry about that ... someone kept talking to me about AIM and MSN Chat while I was posting, and I stuck that into my post instead of the correct words!

My point was that if the mesh or dress is bad, try contacting the creator and politely tell him or her that you can't see the dress on your end. List your expansions. I had an incident where a house I downloaded didn't come out, and the creator didn't realize that it needed OFB to work. (I didn't have that at the time.) "Politely" is the key term. 99% of the time, this was an honest error on the creator's part, and most of the time, it's fixable.
20  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Help / Re: MESH on: May 10, 2010, 12:43:10 am
About the only advice I can give (and it's worth 2 cents, if that) that you haven't already received is to ponder the following questions:

1.  Do you have the expansions for the dress to show up? Some require that you have a particular one, such as Nightlife.

2.. Are you sure you're looking in the right age group? I can't tell you how many times I tried looking for adult dresses on young adults ... they don't necessarily apply to each other.

3. Is it a recent mesh? Occasionally, the creator messes up and later posts a correction.

4. Is the outfit a two-piece when you thought it was a one-piece, or vice versa? I have done THAT numerous times!

5. Did you look in all categories ... sleepwear, PJs, etc.  Sometimes, either the creator wasn't clear if the outfit was a pajama or not, or gets a little sloppy.

You've probably done all these already, and if so, I apologize.

Sometimes, by the way, the outfit is a bad outfit. The mesh is messed up, for instance. In that case, you can politely let the creator know this via private messaging, chat, e-mail, etc.

Yes, you're now at the good news/bad news portion of The Sims 2 saga ... that is, if your computer hardware is behaving itself.

The good news is that you might have one or more pieces of CC in your folder that just isn't playing nicely with the other content in your game ... or was wonky to begin with. This is fixable ... you just have to find it.

The bad news ... you have to find it. And with more than 14 GB on your computer, this may take a while.

Do you have Nightlife? And do you subfolder? When you get a chance, you might want to do that. It makes wading through thousands of downloads much easier.

Good luck!

Oh, dear. I don't know if theraven will concur, but you might indeed be pushing your game with the Downloads size.

I play one game (I have two different games I play on two different computers) on a 1.5 GB computer, and I was once told to watch the size of my Downloads folder on that one. This game does love to eat lots of RAM.

I believe that trying the game vanilla might answer your question as to whether your game itself is corrupted or not.. But you might also make sure you have enough space on your hard drive for a backup and your renamed folder first. Oh, and when you make a backup, rename that as well. Sims2backup is fine.

Perhaps I should let theraven walk you through the next steps.
23  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Help / Re: My game crashes, please help! on: May 05, 2010, 11:47:19 am
Whoa, Nellie! You need to rename the folder in My Documents. Don't move the other stuff ... the stuff in the My Computer area.

My Documents -- EA Games -- Sims 2 . That "Sims 2" folder.

But FIRST, back up your Sims 2 folder in your "good game" and move it somewhere else in your My Documents area. Name it ... anything ... as long as you know what it is. I know this sounds like nagging, but always back up before you start something like this! NEVER try this otherwise. Backing up might take a while. In the meantime, perhaps someone who is more of a "pro" can assist you, too.
24  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Help / Re: My game crashes, please help! on: May 05, 2010, 11:36:02 am
Also, have you tried running the game completely vanilla? Not just removed the Downloads folder. Did you do these steps:

1. Renamed your current game. No need to get fancy ... Sims2aaaa would be fine, unless you have another folder with that name. BTW, backing up before you try anything is always a good idea, as I'm sure you know. I've even backed up the entire old game in My Documents to a disk. Granted, your current game isn't behaving. But just in case you do something that really borks things up, you have a Plan B. You can almost NEVER back up enough!

2. Try running the game without ANY custom ANYTHING .... no custom neighborhoods, houses, camera hacks, terrains, etc. Not all "downloads" are in your Downloads folder. It will generate a new game. Don't panic. Unless you save anything, no harm should come to you. And you DO have your whole-game backup, ready to go.

3. Go into a Sims house you don't care about, and see if the game crashes at this point. And of course, do NOT save anything! If you do, you might very well regret it.

4. Go into CAS, make a Sim, see if the game does something odd there. Once again, no saving anything. X-out of the CAS. You don't want a new Sim!

If nothing crashes, then you might have a gltichy terrain, camera hack, house, etc. in your "good" game. I've had this happen to me. In my case, it was a messed-up house that I downloaded off a site.

25  Simmers' Paradise / General Sims 2 Discussion / Re: SIMS 4??? on: April 16, 2010, 07:53:28 am
"You can have it all, but how much do you want it?'

As a group of patient souls know, I was hoping desperately for this news. But not as Sims Online II ... as an app.  App games are still hot right now, and when someone started a Sims 1 sham site, he got hundreds of thousands of fans ... I believe over 1 million. So yes, the demand IS there for an app Sims.

It should NOT be a continuation IMO, but a separate Sims ... much like "Bustin' Loose" or "Urbz" were on the console. I think it would be a major mistake if EA DOES imply in any way that it's a "true" Sims continuation. It should be more like a side story.

EA should be looking at Slashkey and Rock You! and other like games for inspiration. But not Zynga. Egads, not Zynga. Zynga has been so incredibly money-hungry lately that it's disgusting. It's one thing a peddle a few shinies for sale ... quite another when most of your new items are cash-only. Real-life cash only, that is.

I think what me might get is TirNua. And that would be a disaster.

TirNua is a Sims 1-like game. I know it's on FB, and right now, I don't know if it's on MySpace. I guess I can look at my profile there later. It was allegedly developed by one of the Sims Online creators.

I was giddy with excitement when I read about this app! THIS was what I wanted! I thought I did, anyway.

It's a clunky game to navigate, and its as bad as Zynga with the "gimme gimme gimme" ploy. The game keeps pushing for you to be a "resident" ... for a monthly fee. No, not the "get _____-Cash" angle most of the apps go for. THIS game wants monthly subscriptions. I deleted that app in a hurry.

If this is what EA is going for, there is no way in this galaxy I'm staying with that app. Maybe I'll try it for giggles. But I'd probably dump it in a day, like I did with TirNua. And I fear that EA might be eying this sort of angle, unfortunately. So now, my cries for "Make a Sims 4 app!" are considerably fewer and further between.

26  The Sims 3 / Sims 3 Buzz / Re: So I spoke with an employee of EA Sims 3 team today.. on: April 09, 2010, 12:13:01 pm
Well, while looking through the Facebook apps, I came across a Sims-like game that, on first glance, would remind you of Sims 1 ... TirNua. I believe that someone who later worked on Sims Online started this app. I added it and started playing with it and ...

I deleted it after fifteen minutes. Figures. I theoretically got what I wanted, and realized I didn't want it. Not this version.

The game is clumsy to navigate, and I could see the massive "gimme" campaign looming ahead. Honestly, I don't mind if a developer pushes a little custom content. The game developer, by the way, not some third-party site. I know that some of you disagree with me on this, and hey, I fully respect your opinion.

But to me, there is a world of difference between dangling a few carrots to entice you to part with a bit of change, and dangling bunches of carrots, then jerking the reins back. EA and so many social-networking apps seem to be blurring the difference. Their greed blinds them thoroughly.

For me, with EA, its handling of Sims 2 was mostly "a few carrots" until EA started pushing The Sims Store. Sims 3 seems to be the latter approach. And no, as others wrote, it doesn't help that EA seems to tacitly approve certain greedy pay sites. What is that old saying about lying down with the dogs? Wink
27  The Sims 3 / Sims 3 Buzz / Re: So I spoke with an employee of EA Sims 3 team today.. on: April 04, 2010, 08:29:05 pm
EA. online gaming? So far they have a not so good track record, after the securom debacle who knows just what they'll try to slip into your pc. So far I think Zynga has that market pretty well cornered. Who doesn't play Mafia Wars now?

Well, I don't, but I play Farmville, Cafe World and YoVille, though I don't play CW too often.

There have been a LOAD of complaints that Zynga is getting just too greedy with cash items (Gee ... sounds famliar?) And I notice that many of my "neighbors" have gone off to other games by other companies, several of which, unfortunately, are also getting greedy. I guess that the lure of easy money for pixels is just too strong. Hey, I realize that these companies need to make money but unfortunately, many of these companies just don't offer much for RL cash.

A sham Sims 1 page that kept promising a Facebook Sims 1 game got hundreds of thousands of fans ... I believe the number went over one million, though I'm not sure, since it appears that the page is gone now. This is a SHAM page, and it wasn't heavily promoted, and of course, wasn't endorsed by EA. So yes, the interest in a FB Sims 1 game is there.

I still feel that if EA played its cards right, it could put out a game that rivals Zynga. It might be a "traditional" Sims 1-ish game, or it could an Urbz-type game. The only thing is that EA MUST avoid appearing too greedy. The content must be fairly priced and the cash content not overdone. The game must run smoothly, without many glitches. And the quests must be interesting, with plenty of opportunity to interact with neighbors. It must also be secure ... Zynga gets many complaints about that.

Yup. I think I probably have a better chance of winning the top prize on a lottery. But it could theoretically happen. Too bad greed is too strong a lure.

Out of curiosity ... those who played Sims Online ... how was that game?

Anyway, my situation is that I don't hate the Sims 3. I don't write it off as a total failure. And I know that many people really like it, and I respect that. It's just that I thought that EA would examine free-site creations and take things further from there. And from that point, make the Sims 3 so amazing, so incredible, that Sims 2 players would remark, "Sims 2? What's Sims 2?"

There has been an uptick on creations for Sims 2 everywhere

I'm very happy to hear that!

I've definitely noticed that within the last couple of months or so. For a long time, things were looking grim for Sims 2. Sites were closing left and right ... still are, unfortunately. And no, you're not seeing surges of new Sims 2 stuff. But for the sites that remain, there seems to be a new spirit among many of them. It's as if many creators have indeed decided that the Sims 2 is still worth creating for.
29  A Safe Haven / General Discussion / Re: If You're Not Playing Sims 2 What Other Game Do You Play. on: March 12, 2010, 05:58:19 pm
My husband got me the Urbz for the Playstation 2 and it just arrived today, so I know what I'll be doing at night while my son sleeps until my upstairs computer gets fixed. What is going to make it really nice is the fact that we have a nineteen inch flat panel TV up there to play it on. Cheesy

I enjoyed The Urbz. Granted, it's not an "official" Sims 1 game as Sims fans might categorize it ... it's not like the "real" series in many ways ... but it's not a bad way to pass the time. Smiley Hope you like the game, too.

As for me, I've been on FB and MySpace often, playing various apps over there.
30  The Sims 3 / Sims 3 Buzz / Re: So I spoke with an employee of EA Sims 3 team today.. on: March 10, 2010, 07:18:32 pm
Well, I was one of those way back in June who was not really impressed with Sims 3. But hey, I thought that I'd wait it out for at least a year and see if the bugs finally were squashed. I also wrote that I would wait until I could get the game used for about half-price, since my card was a "trouble card" initially (ATI 4800-series), and I wasn't sure what else I had on my computer that could cause even more problems.

I thought I would be chomping at the bit by now. But no, I can still wait perfectly well for another nine months or more. The price is right. Amazon sometimes offers the game new for $29.99, and you can get it for a little less on EBay.

But the game simply does not interest me. I wish I can say it does. However, even with many of the game's big selling points, such as the open neighborhood, there are down sides. Yes, you lose the loading screen, but you also lose the ability to download interesting terrains geared to what YOU want, not what EA thinks we want.

I played the Sims 1 on console, and was hooked. Sims 2 excited me. Even though our budget was really tight because my husband was laid off, I saved up a dollar here and a dollar there and bought the base game used. I did the same with some of the expansions up to Seasons, which was the last expansion before the Securom debacle. The others, I got new on sale at a local store.

I think that because of Securom, because of Sims 3 (which sorry ... didn't sound like such a rip-roaring success to me even then ... modest, perhaps ... but not rip-roaring), because of the obvious money-grubbing tactics concerning the store, EA has more problems on their hands than the lukewarm reception with Sims 3. As Kaoz wrote, a Sims 4 could be a huge mistake now, unless it truly knocks people's socks off like Sims 1 and 2 did. And Sims 3 did more than simply cool the fervor of many Sims players toward Sims 3. Some, like I, no longer play the Sims in general quite as much as we used to. The Sims we know and love are frozen in time. There are things now such as new FB and MySpace apps vying for our attention, and I admit, our money. So many Sims 2 sites dropped like flies, Sims 1 sites are like precious artifacts, and much of the Sims 3 content doesn't quite get the oohs and aaahs that the other two versions' sites got, though there has been some amazing work fixing the game's problems by the free sites. They should get far more accolades than they do.

EA bought Playfish. Interesting move. EA COULD pioneer a YoVille-like game that could blast YV, which is fun, but bug-ridden and greedy, out of the water. It could resurrect a "lite" version of Sims 1. Give it a retro spin. It could work IF EA isn't greedy and bides its time.

Yeah. I don't think EA would do that either. But one can dream.

And EA has ... or had ... an untapped market with the popularity of netbooks. Most netbooks have trouble with more complex games like Sims 2. But my netbook plays Sims 1 nicely up to Pets. It got wonky when I installed Superstar, unfortunately, but I have enough to work with for now with the five expansions. EA could explore that angle and make sure that all 7 expansions work on most netbooks. Once again, it can toss in a "retro" angle. Many older games, BTW, are enjoying new lives on netbooks, not just The Sims.

EA can also take Securom off BV and beyond. Come on now ... BV is what? About three years old this year? Give it a rest. If it does, I'll finally buy more expansions. But not until then. While the Securom-removing programs are nice, that's not the point. I will NOT reward EA for stupid behavior. And I don't like arrrring the game. So there we are.

And EA could even release a very occasional new "special-edition" Stuff Pack or Expansion for Sims 2, or even a once-in-a-blue moon  Sims 1 expansion if they iron out any netbook problems. Stop trying to pretend the other two don't exist, and they don't have fans!

Yes, EA can finally revamp Sims 3 and make it the game it could be. It can even resurrect the other two series and take them in other directions once in a while. It will take time and money. But it isn't impossible. I'm not holding my breath, though.
