Thanks for the comments Zorom Grin, do let me know if the story gets boring at some point of time!!

“And finally the mysterious Winter case comes to a dramatic end. The ‘White Mother’ Emily Winter has been found and she has lost her memory. Apparently, there had been an accident in South America, where she had been for the last few months. Whether she was in someone’s company at the time is impossible to tell as she was found alone in a medical camp. But her return is a very good  news for Silverdawn’s most-likely to be the next mayor, Jack Winter. The Winters have forgiven everything and have accepted Emily Winter like before. Her return had been kept as secret but informants had been able to dig out the information from reliable sources.” - Global News Channel

Jack was holding Emily tightly by her shoulder as they got out of the car and walked towards their house. The media had been tipped off before and had gathered around the Winter mansion like a swarm of bees ready to attack. As soon as they got out of the car, there was flashing of cameras, screaming, hustling and bustling of the journalists to get a better view of them. The police was finding it very difficult to manage the crowd by themselves.
Jack was smiling now as they faded questions almost reached his ears over the uproar. But Emily was very tensed and it showed on her face. She was coiling in Jack’s arms as she looked around the huge crowd of journalists who were there to take her pictures.
But Jack slowly directed her towards the house.

The entire Winter family were waiting for them to enter in the hallway. But Beth’s happiness was noticeably the greatest among them.
“Welcome back, Emily!” exclaimed Beth Winter, spreading her arms wide and greeting Emily warmly from the bottom of her heart, “Come to me, my little daughter.”
Emily embraced Beth tightly and immediately felt at home. She looked around everybody. Of course, she did not remember anybody there but they must be her family, she thought.

I left them for someone else?” thought Emily, looking at the gleeful face of Reese, Jeremiah, Esther. Caroline was the only one who was not happy. Rosemary slowly went by Jack’s side and stood beside him looking at Emily.
“Welcome Emily! Today’s a new day for all of us, so let us forget the past and move forward,” she said, stroking her head gently, “You are very lucky that you have a husband like Jack. Not everyone is so fortunate to have a husband and a family like this, you know. Remember one thing though, the first time was a mistake, but the next time will be a sin, which is unforgivable.”

Emily swallowed as she noticed the irony in Rosemary’s voice. And to put icing on what Rosemary said, Caroline was the next one to get to talk to her.
“So you’re back from the dead, I see? If I were you, I would have tried to bury myself alive than strut around in front of those cameras,” snapped Caroline, and went away towards the dining room.
“Oh dear! Don’t listen to her, she’s just angry at what you had done,” said Beth, showing Emily towards the dining room, “It’ll take some time for her to forget everything. But you are back, that is all what matters to us right now.”
Emily nodded, still confused and extremely embarrassed.
How it feels to come back to the house which you left for someone else, and yet you do not remember what made you leave.
Reese hugged Emily tightly, and said, “I’m glad you are back, Emily. I missed you so much.”
Emily smiled and followed them into the dining room. Everybody was talking to her, except Caroline, telling her little things now and then that could relive her memory. Everyone in the house seemed so happy.

Rosemary and Jack stood by the entrance of the dining hall. They did not join the rest of the family but were talking to each other.
“Keep an eye on her. This time do the right thing, please,” said Rosemary to Jack in a matter-of-fact voice.
“I will and I’m sure my mother will do that as well, even if you don’t ask her.”
“Beth won’t be a problem to deal with,” said Rosemary, looking at Beth, “It’s the girl, I’m worried about.”
She won’t remember anything. Nothing will help her remember anything here, grandmother,” said Jack.
“Let’s keep it that way then. Then we don’t want to have many things to bury in the ground, right Jack?” said Rosemary, maliciously and looked at Emily from Jack.

Emily stood confused, with many questions in her mind, amidst her family feeling entirely like a Stranger.

18  Simmers' Paradise / Sims Stories / Chapter 10:: on: February 27, 2010, 12:44:08 pm

A private jet to Buenos Aires was quickly scheduled following the phone call Jack had received two days before. Everyone was much tensed in the Winter household as Jack did not bother to explain his reason for leaving so suddenly. But Rosemary and Jack were looking more stressed than anyone in the house. But nobody asked them about what was happening.
As soon as Jack landed in Argentina, he rushed to a five-star hotel and got refreshed. His driver had been given instructions earlier so that he did not ask any questions. He took Jack to the city outskirts to the medical camp which had been set up there by some voluntary workers. Apparently there had been an accident six months ago and a few who survived the crash were being looked after by Dr. Brian Fuentes and his colleagues.
And it was Dr. Brian Fuentes, whose phone call had brought Jack to Argentina.

“Mr. Jack Winter, welcome to Buenos Aires,” exclaimed Dr. Brian Fuentes, when Jack got out of his car, “I had been waiting for you since morning. You said you will call before you come here.”
“Yeah, I would have but I just couldn’t find time,” said Jack, shaking hands with Dr. Fuentes, “I had to come here directly from the airport. Your call had quite an impact on my schedule, Dr. Foontos.”
It’s Dr. Fuentes, and it’s a pleasure meeting a celebrity like you,” corrected Dr. Fuentes, warmly, “Please follow me.”
Dr. Fuentes led Jack as he began to observe the filthy surroundings. The medical camp was under maintained as the one-storey buildings around the property seemed like thousand years old and ready to crumble. The volunteers around the camp looked amateur and hot-tempered. Jack began to feel sick as he stepped carefully on the dirty earth beneath him. He was unwise to wear his four grand worth shoes today.
“The funds are pretty low for us now,” said Dr. Fuentes, as they were walking, “It is becoming very hard for us to maintain this camp and we are asking for donations to all the people whom we can approach. You see, the rising prices are becoming very difficult for organization like us to cope up with.”
“Tell me about it,” murmured Jack, coldly, “What is the condition of your treatments?”
“We try to give the best to everyone who comes in,” filled in Dr. Fuentes, “But sometimes we cannot take patients for we cannot afford to keep them. But when the bus accident happened six months ago, we were pretty much without patients then. Most of the people died in the fire, except a few.”

Jack was now listening to Dr. Fuentes’ rubbish talk. He was hardly interested in what was happening in the pathetic medical circus around him. He was interested in the bus accident which happened six months ago in Argentina.
“So the survivors are still here under your supervision?”
“No, two of them died a week after the accident. And one of them left for his own city to get better treatment,” said Dr. Fuentes.
“So how did you come to know about me again?” asked Jack.
“I was in Mexico last week. I just flew in here yesterday,” said Dr. Fuentes, then noticing Jack wincing, he said, “I was in a police station to complain about my lost purse, when I saw the picture of your wife in one of the policeman’s hand. I asked him who was she and he said she was missing for six months and her family were searching for her. And they said that your family thought she might be in Mexico. I told him she was in my camp and about her condition.”
“We’ll see about that,” said Jack.
Dr. Fuentes smiled and led him through a door.

“Maria, what have you done here?” yelled Dr. Fuentes at one of the over-weight nurse who was doodling on the computer. The nurse did not seem to hear him but continued to do what she was doing.
The room smelt very bad, something was rotting in the room. Jack covered his nose and felt even sicker. Dr. Fuentes was removing some beer bottles from the weighing machine of the counter and the nurse finally turned around to notice, who was disturbing her.

“Who’s the chick?” she asked, her tone drawling, as she stared at Jack and smiled.
“Shut up and show some respect to this gentleman,” snapped Dr. Fuentes and hurrying over to Jack, he said, “I am really sorry for the – uh – thing here. They are amateurs. They do not know how to use things properly.” And he hid the beer bottles under the table. Maria winked at him.

“Please come this way, Mr. Winter,” said Dr. Fuentes, and turning to the nurse, “Maria, shift you chair, he cannot get a proper look.”
Maria shifted her chair to make space for Jack. Jack stepped into the space and looked through the glass window. He gasped out loudly.
“I believe she is your wife, Emily Winter?” asked Dr. Fuentes.

And there she was. Emily Winter was lying on the bed peacefully as another doctor was checking her up.
“She has lost her memory in the accident,” informed Dr. Fuentes, “I could not find anything to identify her nor did I get any help from any embassies. None of them could find her in their database without her passport. She was like a ghost. It was lucky that I went to Mexico. Don't you think so?”
They went into the ward and Emily looked at them. She was confused.

“Hello Emily! You remember, yesterday I told you about your name and your family,” told Dr. Fuentes to Emily, “There is your husband, Jack Winter. Do you remember him?”
Emily stared at Jack for a while but did not say anything.
“He has come to take you home with him,” continued Dr. Fuentes, “You will finally remember everything.”

Jack quickly looked from Dr. Fuentes to Emily. His heart was pounding against his chest as her green eyes penetrated his blue eyes as if they had many questions in them. Jack’s mind went blank after that.

Shadowhaven Boulevard is the place where the wealthy people of Silverdawn try to outshine each other by showing off their richness. One of the residents was the Dubois family, especially known for their power-hungry and manipulative nature. When they had come to Silverdawn to expand their business, many had objected to their settlement there. But the then Governor, Rosemary Winter, had become good friends with the family, so nobody could actually voice their thoughts. Everybody in town knew about the growing relations between the two families, whose union was threatening the very base of Silverdawn city’s ruling system. Yet rumours were that Jack Winter and Melanie Dubois were on the verge of getting married soon. Nobody knew how soon as Jack’s position for the Governor would be endangered. With Emily Winter’s noble image in the society and her charity work knowing no bounds, it was difficult for the two families to unite.

Today, the Winter family was invited to the Dubois family mansion for an informal lunch. Faye Dubois had wanted them to come over at their place since the Jack announced his candidature for Silverdawn’s Governor position. But the most distressful things followed up with Emily’s escape with her lover. Faye wanted her daughter Melanie to entangle Jack in her love, but Emily always had been his distraction somehow. Still, Melanie, being Jack’s very close friend, knew there was nothing left in their marriage.
“Well! Jack, I must tell you with that charming approach of yours all the female votes will be yours this time,” said Faye, as all of them were dining in their house. The butler was moving around filling everybody’s glass of champagne.
Herbert Dubois nodded his head in agreement and said, “I agree, Jack. But it’s not only the female population but I was talking to my friends in the Royal Mile Club and they were extremely sympathetic towards you after what had happened.”

Jack smiled and exchanged gleeful looks with his grandmother.
“Every time we visit your place, I have noticed you always have the best news for us, Herbert,” said Rosemary, gladly, sipping from her glass.
“You seriously know how to keep your friends interested in you, Faye,” said Caroline, with little sarcasm and everybody laughed.

After that they started discussing about the changes which Jack might bring upon when he becomes the Governor. They finished their appetizer, Crab stuffed mushrooms, and the butler took the plates away.
“It was really good, Mrs. Dubois,” commented Reese, happily, “I’m usually not very fond of mushrooms. But this was really good.”
“Actually, Melanie made it by herself,” said Chad, “I told her you didn’t like mushrooms, but she was confident you’ll like it.”

Really Melanie? I didn’t know you were such a good cook,” said Reese and smiled at Melanie.
“I know Jack likes crab-meat so I thought I’d try something new,” said Melanie Dubois, honestly, “I didn’t expect it to be so good, though.”
Jack grinned at her and said, “I’m glad that someone at least cares about what I like.”
Melanie patted gently on his shoulder. And Jack’s mobile phone vibrated in his pocket.

“Excuse me, its work,” said Jack and got off the table to take the call. Melanie looked a little disappointed but she smiled to herself.
Jack was actually very angry at his personal assistant. He had confirmed with her that he did not have any appointments that afternoon and wanted to have a peaceful lunch. But she had been calling him continuously for the last twenty minutes and he was constantly rejecting the call.
“What is it Cynthia?” asked Jack, rudely, “You know, I had asked you to handle this afternoon by yourself.”
“I’m very sorry to call you, sir,” apologized Cynthia, “But I have received a call which is very important for you.”
“Is it from the President of this country?” mocked Jack, sarcastically, “I don’t understand why you test your mind so much. It is becoming obvious that you are tired of your job.”
“I got a call from Mexico, sir. The person said he had information about your wife.”
Jack’s mind went blank. How was that possible?
“Fill me in,” he said and listened to his assistant for ten minutes without interrupting her. Rosemary was looking at Jack now and then. The expression on his face was worrying her. What could go wrong now?
“All right, I’m coming to office now,” said Jack hanging up the call.

He did not know what to say or what to do. His thoughts were cloudy. He went to his grandmother and whispered something in her ears. Faye and Herbert exchanged looks and thought what was happening. Melanie was staring at Jack hopefully.
Rosemary’s face became grim and turned graver with what Jack was telling her.
“Is everything all right, mother?” asked Caroline.
Rosemary silenced her and Faye, who was on the verge of saying something fell silent as well. Finally, Rosemary nodded as the people around her were dead silent.
“I’m extremely sorry for this, but something very serious has come up,” said Jack, buttoning his coat, “I have to leave now. Thank you so much for the appetizers, Mr. and Mrs. Dubois, but I guess I won’t be fortunate enough to stay behind for the main course.”
Everybody was surprised at this sudden departure of Jack. Caroline looked at her mother but knew she would not say anything. Faye and Herbert looked utterly shocked.

“What has happened, Jack?” asked Melanie, sadly.
“It’s very complicated, Melanie,” he said, “I’m sorry I have to leave like this, but I really have to look into something that has unexpectedly come up.”
“I understand,” said Melanie, miserably, “When will I see you again? You hardly are available nowadays.”
“Don’t worry, if everything goes right, I’ll be all over the news,” replied Jack, kissed Melanie’s cheek lightly, "I loved the crab, thank you, Melanie."
Then he left.

CHAPTER 8

It was pretty late at night. And somebody was knocking at the door.
Alexander Gates was shocked rather than surprised that somebody would pay a visit at this hour. He definitely did not have many friends in Silverdawn and of them; nobody knew that he would come back tonight.
Even he did not know about that until yesterday.
He opened the door and smiled.
“Well! Well! Well!” exclaimed Alex, warmly, scratching his head, apparently surprised at his visitor, “I wasn’t exactly expecting an after-arriving-surprise welcome.”
Where the hell have you been?” snapped Deborah, glaring at him, “Move over.”

Alex moved over pretty much confused as Deborah marched into his apartment. His living room was disorganized as he had just started unpacking, but Deborah did not seem to care. She was scanning his apartment and then she started to check all his rooms one by one.
“What are you doing, Debbie?” asked Alex, very confused, “What are you looking for?”
“Cut the crap, Alex,” said Debbie, angrily, turning to him, “Where is Emily?”
Alex stared at her for a few moments, confused.
“Where is she?” yelled Debbie, angrily.
“How should I know?” replied Alex “Is this some trick question? I think April is still six months away.”

Debbie continued to stare at him for a long time. Alex was getting worried now.
Six months?” whispered Debbie, looking at him, “Six months, Alex? Where the hell have you been, Alex?”
“What’s wrong, Debbie?” asked Alex, cautiously, “What has happened? Is Emily okay?”
Debbie swung her head impatiently and tears swelled in her eyes.
“Emily’s missing, Alex,” she said it finally.
Alex’s heart skipped a beat. “What?”
“Emily is missing. Nobody knows where she is.”
“But how can that be possible?” asked Alex, desperately, “She’s one of the Winters, for goodness’ sake, how the hell can she be missing?”
“The Winters’ are indicating that she ran away with you,” said Debbie.

WHAT?”
“Sit down and let’s start from where you were for the last six months,” suggested Debbie, “Emily disappeared right about the same time too. Obviously they had to link them together.”
Both of them settled down. And Alex started to explain that he went to Mexico for his holiday and after that he was supposed to join his colleague in Venezuela for a project on a moon-worshipping ceremony of a very old tribe. He further described that after a month of his holiday, when he went to Venezuela, his colleague had already got a cue to a secretly arranged ceremony of the same tribe away from the crowd, in the depths of the forest where the moon shines upon a lake.
“Then we went there and were of course not allowed to gatecrash their ceremony beforehand. But Gerry was persistent and it took him almost two months to persuade the tribal chief to allow us to cover the ceremony,” said Alex, scratching his head now and then to remember what exactly had happened in the past six months, “Then the preparations for the ceremony had started and we had to stop ourselves from contacting the outer world as the tribal people did not want us to do that once we were in their confidence, see.”

“And what about your office? Did they know what you were doing?” asked Debbie.
“Yeah, they knew everything. We had informed them that we were going to cover this ceremony from an entirely different point of view,” informed Alex, “We also told them that we might not be able to be in contact for while and they understood completely. It is going to be our featured story in the next issue. Clearly, they didn’t want anyone else to know about it, I guess.”
Debbie did not say anything for a while. But Alex was very worried.
“What happened here after I left?” he asked, anxiously.
“Well! You told me you’d leave after that scandalous party at the Winters’,” started Debbie, “And then you vanished from the scene. I went to your office, so did many reporters I believe, but they said you were on holiday in Mexico.”
Alex did not say anything but continued to listen carefully.
“Emily was not going out publicly anymore, after that incident,” said Debbie, “I tried to reach her but she wouldn’t take my call. So, I thought of visiting the Winter Mansion, but I just didn’t have the guts. And then an assignment came up and I had to leave town for a few days.”

Debbie stopped and looked at Alex. He was completely distressed.
“But one night, I was at a party and my phone was in silent mode,” said Debbie and she got very nervous, “When I got back to my hotel, I saw twenty missed calls from Emily.”
“Goodness! Did you call her back?” asked Alex, very tensed.
“Of course, I did. But all my calls went to her voicemail box,” said Debbie, “I called her at home but Jeremiah said she had left home after the party. And one week after that, everybody started to notice her disappearance. And the Winters’ were suggesting that she left with you. Since, the two of you disappeared about the same time.”
“She was terribly upset at the party that night,” remembered Alex, not listening to Debbie, “She was so messed up as if something was eating her from inside. I’d asked her what was the problem, but, you know...she wasn’t in her sense as usual and Jack got his chance pull the trigger on us.”
“She had been upset much before that,” said Debbie, thinking, “She wanted to tell me something, but she didn’t want me to get involved in anyway. So, she wouldn’t tell me anything. I had asked Beth and even she said she was definitely worried about Emily. She said Emily was hiding something,”
So? That must have something to do with Jack or Rosemary or both of them?” said Alex, angrily.

“Yeah, but Alex, we’ve much more problem to deal with. Since, she is not with you...” Debbie stopped and looked at him suspiciously, “Are you sure Emily is not with you Alex? Because Jack told me something, which...”
No, Debbie! No! You know, she always looked at me as her friend and never more than that,” said Alex, miserably, “But I wish she had, at least I would have been able to take her away from that hell. I would have made her much happier. And how can you believe Jack after whatever he has done? Huh!”
“I’m so sorry, Alex,” said Debbie, “But...forget it! But if she’s not with you, this raises the question: where is she?”
“I hope she’s safe, wherever she is,” said Alex, resting his forehead on his palm.
“Trust me; I would give everything I have, to know that,” said Debbie, and many more negative thoughts started cramming her head.

CHAPTER 7

Reese Winter sat in the bedroom, legs crossed and on the phone. It had been almost a day since her boyfriend had messaged her and after that there was no news from his side. Usually, he is more protective about her and gives her a missed call or sends her a smiley message showing that he is thinking about her.
Reese had always been the most pampered member in the Winter family, being the youngest. Her mother, Caroline Winter, had left her husband, Matthew Hoffman, many years ago and they were neither very keen about rekindling their horribly-damaged relationship. Even if Reese was the only one linking them together, it did not matter. As her father had moved on with other ladies in his life and her mother had finally, after all these years, achieved her goal of becoming the Managing Director of Winter Corporation.
The phone was finally ringing at least. It was switched off before. Reese hoped her boyfriend would pick up the phone. He was really beginning to scare her.

“Hi! Chad? Where have you been? I’ve been so scared that I couldn’t get through to you,” exclaimed Reese, as soon as her boyfriend, Chadwick Dubois, answered his phone.
“Hey hun! I’m like so, so, so, so sorry for scaring you like that. Wish I was there to hold you in my arms to make it upto you,” he replied, eloquently and Reese smiled.
“But what happened? You like totally disappeared,” asked Reese, taking hair out of her face, “I called Ralph but he said he didn’t know where you went after your practice.”
“Yeah, he wasn’t even there for the practice so how could he know where we went after the practice,” said Chad, shoving away a box with his foot, “We had a long practice and after that Jay, Ed and me went for a drink at the Hub.”

“Oh! I didn’t know Ralph didn’t turn up for the practice,” said Reese, relaxing on the bed, “Was he out cruising for girls again? He’s so typical, you know.” And she giggled.
“I guess so,” replied Chad, from the other side of the phone, “I didn’t get a chance to talk to him today. I’ll ask him what happened. Hey babes! Are we still up for tomorrow’s party? Ed called me up again asking me if you can bring those things.”

“Umm...I’m not sure, Chad,” answered Reese, hesitating a lot, “Count me out of the party, please. I don’t want grandmama to find out about it. And if my mother comes to know about it, she’ll ground me for like forever.”
“Don’t be such a spoilsport, girl,” said Chad, casually, “Look nobody will know about it, trust me, sweety! Please don’t back out like that. We’re looking forward to your contribution, Reese.”
“Chad, you know that how difficult it is for me to do things against anybody’s wish around here,” snapped Reese, getting up from the bed, “My mother and I are not exactly in a good mother-daughter relationship and doing something like this unknown to my grandmama can fetch me a lot of trouble. Please try to understand, Chad, I can’t come to this party.”
“All righty, then, I’ll tell others you won’t bring those stuff, you know,” replied Chad, trying to convince her, “But at least some to the party, girl. You know, how much I’ll miss you if you don’t come, right?”
“Chad, I can’t come to this party,” said Reese, persuasively, “I’ve told you before to not to invite me to these kind of parties. I don’t like going there at all.”

“If I can take the risk for myself, why can’t you do that for me, Reese?” said Chad, angrily, “I thought you cared about me. Well! I’m kinda noticing you’re separating yourself from me lately. Is there something we should talk about?”
“NO! I love you, Chad, you can’t think like that, please,” replied Reese, almost horrified, “It’s just...uh...I’m not comfortable at these parties and I can’t...I just can't do the things you guys do. And with the increasing tension in our house with Emily’s disappearance, it’s just getting more and more complicated each day.”
There was silence.
“Chad? Chad? Are you there?”
“Yeah! Hey Reese, I’ll call you later, okay? I’ve a call waiting from a friend,” said Chad, after sometime.
“Sure, you do that, okay? Love you too much,” said Reese.
Yeah, same here,” replied Chad, wincing.

“The chances are high that Jack will win this election,” pointed out Rosemary, discussing with her daughter Caroline Winter and grandson, Jack, in her office, “If Emily had not disappeared any sooner; Jack's position would not have been as stable as it is now.”
“But she can come back anytime,” said Caroline, trying to reason with her mother, “and with her grudge against you and Jack, I don’t think it will help at all. We should not forget, she is more popular with the public because of her ‘White Mother’ drama at Hope.”
“She’s not going to come back,” said Jack, inattentively drumming his fingers on the desk, “And nobody should forget, Hope belongs to us. Emily was just being too interfering over there. Obviously, that had put her in the spotlight.”
“How can you be so sure that she won’t come back?” asked Caroline, sceptically. And she looked at Jack and then at her mother.
Rosemary coughed harshly and Jack looked at her and she glared at him. Jack immediately understood.
“It’s just a wild assumption,” said Jack, confidently, “I don’t think I need to explain to you of all people, why she won’t come back, Aunt Caroline.”

“You are right, Jack!” said Caroline, patting him on his shoulder and turning to her mother, she said, “The day I saw her, I knew she was a bad seed. I had told you not to associate our family with such a low-standard nothing. No background, no status...ohh! She used to make me feel tainted.”
“There is no need to repeat all that over again, Caroline,” ordered Rosemary, but still Caroline continued to say what she had to say.
“And then she abuses her newly-found status given to her and humiliates us in front of the world. I mean,” then turning to Jack, who was silently listening to her, she said, “Of all the girls around the city, you had to choose this bad-breed.”
That’s enough, Caroline;” said Rosemary, loudly, “Do not forget it was our decision to bring her into this family, Jack was in love with her, don’t blame him for anything.”
Caroline smiled maliciously and asked, “Did her child really die in her womb, mother, or you had to abort it for it was not Jack’s?”
“Stop it, Aunt Caroline,” cried Jack, banging the table and Caroline looked away from him still smiling, “Let’s not talk so rudely about the....”

Jack stopped and looked at Rosemary again, whose expression became graver and he said, “About the past. What’s happened has happened, we can’t change it. But we need to focus on the present right now.”
“If Jack wins this election, you will take over his position at office,” declared Rosemary, clearly indicating they should not continue this conversation again, “As for your position, Caroline, I’m considering the Dubois.”
Are you joking, mother?” interfered Caroline, mocking, “Faye Dubois? Her head is thicker than her hip. How can you even be thinking about considering her? Does she think of anything other than which clothes will fit her elephant body?”
“I’m getting tired of your insensible comments,” snapped Rosemary, coldly and it wiped the smile out of Caroline’s face, “I’m considering Melanie Dubois. It’s about time we took the next step into strengthening the Winter-Dubois bonding.”
“Oh my goodness! Are you trying to...” started Caroline again, in her mocking tone.
“No, I’m not getting married to Melanie,” said Jack, with hesitation, “It will harm my image.”

“Okay! But I want to know what if Emily really comes back? How can we handle that?” asked Caroline, seriously.
“Then Jack will forgive her and we will accept her,” said Rosemary, pointing at Jack and he nodded, “That will be the master-stroke in our campaign planning and we will continue to control over Silverdawn.”
As Caroline started to protest, Rosemary said, "You may leave, Caroline. Jack and I have something serious to discuss about."

“So what, Esther? It won’t hurt taking a look in his room, you know?” exclaimed Shannon, the new house-maid, cutting bread for the Winter’s breakfast, “I’d just peep in and nobody will notice, I promise.”
“Then its better if you just quit,” replied Esther, the Winter’s cook, “There’s a lot of people out there who would replace you in one hour’s notice, trust me.”
What is wrong with you? Don’t you want to know what happened to her?” retorted Shannon, wiping her sweat as it was hot in the kitchen, “I mean it could be so scandalous. Do you know how much the paper-people are going to pay if we can give them some inside information?”

“Yes, we know that, Shannon,” answered Jeremiah, putting the grocery in the fridge, “but we have been through the thick and thin of this family and will do anything in our possible way to keep it away from them.”

“I’ve been working in this family too long for this kind of situation, girly,” snapped Esther, waving the cooking spoon at Shannon, “The last maid got herself fired because she became a detective for one of those paper-people you just mentioned and she lost her job and her landlady suddenly didn’t want her in her house anymore. I hope you don’t want to follow her foot-steps.”
“These are powerful people, Shannon,” reasoned Jeremiah, calmly with her, “You just don’t want to be in their bad books. Esther and I have known that too well for us to stick around for so long in this house. They don’t like outsiders like us interfering, it’s very simple.”
“But that woman has been missing for too long, if you haven’t noticed,” Shannon argued back, getting tremendously excited now, “Emily’s disappearance is just not making any sense. And there is this guy from this paper who offered me two hundred bucks for just getting him something good. How can I say no to him? And he was kinda cute, not that I want to date him or anything.”

“Who’s getting two hundred bucks?”
Everybody turned around. Beth Winter walked into the kitchen as usual to check on the breakfast, like every day. Jeremiah smiled and wished her before bowing himself out of the kitchen and went to set the table. Shannon was so horrified as her appearance, that she turned bright red and grinned widely at her and almost ran out of the kitchen after Jeremiah. Beth wished Jeremiah and smiled back at Shannon, surprised. Then she went to the stove to check on the tomato soup.

Beth Winter was Rosemary Winter’s son, Dennis Winter’s widow and Jack’s mother. She was too simple for the Winter family’s grandeur and her down-to-earth attitude made her stay away from the media most of her life. Even when her husband died in a terrible car accident twelve years ago, she was so afraid to face the media that she did not attend his funeral. And people had talked a lot about it then and they said she did not fit into the Winter family at all. But she loved her family very much. When Emily got married to Jack, she was overwhelmed with joy for the first time in many years and immediately took Emily as her daughter than daughter-in-law. So, Emily’s leaving them so unexpectedly had struck her very hard. She did not talk to anybody for weeks and stayed locked up in her room for most of the time crying. Jeremiah had told Esther that he had heard Beth crying in her room at nights. And it was almost after a month after the incident, she started coming out of her room for a change.

“So how are you today, Beth?” asked Esther, looking directly at her and the look on her face was so rigid that Beth smiled at her.
Esther had been doing that every time whenever Beth came into the kitchen and since they were on good terms with each other, Beth always looked up to Esther as her elder sister. Esther was the one who made her feel at home when Beth got married to Dennis Winter. The house had seemed to be too empty at that time and though she came from a well-to-do family still she had found it difficult to settle down initially. But Esther had been her friend and companion throughout all these years.
“You know, Esther, we are still trying to cope up with the situation,” she replied, her voice quavering with emotion, Esther noticed that and patted her shoulder, “I just cannot believe Emily’s not around. She used to keep the environment so pleasant and full of joy. This house doesn’t feel the same anymore to me. I don’t like it here anymore.”
“Don’t say like that,” said Esther, massaging Beth’s shoulder, “we don’t know what was behind that innocent face of hers, Beth. Maybe it is true, she ran away with her lover. She wasn’t exactly happy with Jack; you know that, so does everybody.  She had made it public so many times, embarrassing your family.”
“I'm just bringing myself to believe something like that, Esther,” said Beth, looking away from her, “But I don’t like being here. I feel like there is this huge hole punched right through my heart and...”
Beth looked away and wiped her tears. Then Esther, holding Beth by the arms, said, “You still have your family, Beth. You have to take care of them now, be strong. Even if Jack puts up this strong attitude of his, acting as if he doesn’t care, but he does, you know that? He needs you by his side now.”

Beth smiled weakly and released herself from Esther’s grip and asked her to send her breakfast to her room. She said she suddenly was not feeling well and wanted to lie down.
After reaching her room, Beth started sobbing very hard and she looked at her wedding picture, by the side of her bed, and said to her husband’s picture, “Oh Dennis! I’m so sorry; I couldn’t keep my promise to you. Please forgive me!”

“I don’t know, Lily,” said Francesca Rosswell, Emily’s grandmother, “I believe you are not thinking about it.”
“No!” retorted Emily, merrily as she kept looking at the stairwell, “I know what I’m doing, granny. Believe me; he is the right one for me.”
She smiled at her grandmother. Francesca was very unsure.
“It has only been two months,” she said, “Your grandfather and I decided to marry after eight years of knowing each other, when we were ready. You’re rushing things.”
Emily looked at her grandmother and smiled, then she said, “I know I am rushing things, but they can help you with your medications, granny.”

Francesca looked indignant and replied hotly, “If you think I will take their money to stay alive. Lily, you are very wrong. I never want to live when I know you are not happy.”
“Why do you have so much grudge against them, granny?” asked Emily, seriously.
Francesca Rosswell looked away from her granddaughter. All her friends at the Oakville old-age home were dressed up nicely, since the Winters were coming to pay a visit to them. Francesca had a bad feeling about it and she had the same feeling before her son and his wife died in an accident ten years ago. She would not risk losing Emily too.
“You wanted to see me getting married, didn’t you, granny? Now, I have found the right groom for me and he is going to make our lives better, you’ll see.”
“The Winters don’t exactly have a good past, Emily,” answered Francesca, firmly, “Their family has a scandalous past. I am not sure I want you to go into that family. Don’t you see, Silverdawn city sits and stands on their orders?”
“Past is past, we need to look into the future. Just meet them, I’m sure you’ll like them,” said Emily.

“Oh my goodness! The Mayor is so stylishly on time,” exclaimed Bertha, Francesca’s friend, “I am going to vote for her surely. And Jack is so devilishly handsome, Emily. I envy you, child.”
Emily and Francesca saw Silverdawn’s most likely mayor-to-be, Rosemary Winter and her grandson, Jack Winter slowly descending the stairs with majesty as they greeted and wished as many people on their way as possible.
“She’s won this election already, you know,” said Francesca, as Rosemary and Jack greeted and shook hands with most of the residents of Oakville old-age home, but Emily was not listening to her as she was very excited.

“Mrs. Rosswell, it is a pleasure meeting you,” greeted Rosemary Winter, honey dripping from her voice, “This is Jack Winter, my grandson and I believe I do not need to elaborate any further about him and Emily.” And she giggled very unnaturally.
“Greetings, Mrs. Rosswell! I have heard so much about you from Emily,” said Jack, shaking hands with her, “I think she forgot to mention to me that she has inherited your beauty.”
Emily laughed. Francesca smiled in reply and did not say anything. Rosemary sensed something was wrong and immediately said, “Emily, why don’t you go and introduce Jack to everybody, who love you so much around here? Jack was looking forward to meet them, you know?”
“Sure, why not? Come, Jack! They were so excited you know, when I told them you were coming to visit us...” and Emily took Jack away to introduce him to everybody who lived there. Francesca and Rosemary were left alone together.

“She looks so happy with him, doesn’t she?” asked Rosemary, calmly, “they make a great couple and she’s going to be very happy with Jack.”
“Convince me, Mrs. Winter, why I shouldn’t believe that your grandson wants to marry a dying old woman’s granddaughter for you to become the mayor?” asked Francesca directly without any hesitation, “Especially with the media covering this news so prominently that your opponent does not even look like he stands a chance.”
Rosemary smirked and pointed towards Emily and Jack. “All right then! I’ll drop the act. I have agreed to pay for your medications, Francesca, if I can call you by your first name,” she said, softly, “My doctors say that you don’t have more than a year left to live. I know it is hard to accept but it is the truth, which is ugly and you know that too. And I believe you love your granddaughter, don’t you?”
Francesca did not reply but stared at Emily in silence.
“I take that as a yes, you love her very much,” continued Rosemary, after a minute, “My grandson likes Emily if that is what you want to know. And he was the one, who brought your condition to my notice. If helping you is going to help me win this election, Francesca, why shouldn’t we just agree to this marriage? I must tell you that Emily has refused to take any help as an act of charity or sympathy. Only if she is getting married to Jack, then she'll agree to take our help to make you live longer, that is for a year maybe.”
“I don’t want Emily to be played with by your family,” whispered Francesca.
“Emily will be treated lavishly when she is married into our family,” said Rosemary, and pointed again towards Jack and Emily, “After you die, I’m sorry to say this, but do you want Emily to recover on her own or you want her to be a part of a family who can help her move on? And from what I have heard, Emily is very sensitive, is it? Your death might strike her very harshly, do you know that?”

Francesca looked at her granddaughter. She looked so happy, in fact it has been long since, she looked so happy and relieved. Jack was holding her tightly in his arms as if he is already taking care of her. But it was happening so quickly, Francesca was continuously succumbing to her bad feelings about the entire thing.
“We have not told her about your condition, Francesca,” said Rosemary, “We are not going to tell her anything at all. So, for Emily's sake, please agree to this marraige.”

“Will she be happy?” stuttered Francesca after a very long silence and on the verge of tears.
“Of course, she will be,” said Rosemary, lightly, “Please don’t worry about her. Her life just couldn’t get any better.”

“Cynthia,” said Jack, irritated, “What has happened that you had to disturb my meeting with the Slaters?”
“I apologise, sir. But it was very urgent,” replied Cynthia, Jack’s personal assistant, nervously and pointed towards Jack’s office, “Miss Mason, from Silver Herald newspaper is here. I couldn’t avoid her; she was threatening to damage your image and attracting a lot of attention in the lobby.”
Jack looked at his office and saw she was sitting there, looking through some papers. He was very angry and irritated. Deborah Mason was the last person he wanted to see right now.
“I’ll handle it, but next time, be sure that she is nowhere near my office or both you and your receptionist friend will be out of Silverdawn before you say ‘sorry’,” replied Jack, vehemently and stormed into his office.

“I don’t like you anywhere around me,” snapped Jack at Deborah, entering his office, “Get out of here before I need to call the security.”

Deborah got up from the chair and smiled mockingly at Jack.
“Try not to get the idea that I like being around you, Jack Winter,” retorted Deborah, “I’ll rather die than do that, but I’m here to congratulate you actually.”
Jack smirked at her and settled on the sofa as her eyes followed him. “Congratulate me? What did I do to deserve this honour, Deborah?” said Jack, maliciously.
“It’s for the publicity stunt which you carried out so expertly last week,” said Deborah, glaring at Jack, “I believe you are now trying to create a sympathetic, cheated husband’s image to gain your supporters' votes, isn’t it?”
Jack sneered at her and said, “Come on, Deborah! Look at me; don’t I look like I was cheated? Well! At least, I can say all the credit goes to your friend, won’t you agree with me?”
“Just shut up, Jack!” roared Deborah, “How dare you suggest something as cheap as that about Emily? You know perfectly well, how loyal she was to you even if you didn’t care about her. She was always faithful to you, Jack.”
“Oh my! I don’t believe I’m listening to the crap you are saying,” jeered Jack, as Deborah continued to glower at him, “don’t tell me your friend didn’t tell you about her and Alex? I believe you know him as well, don’t you?”

“There was nothing between Emily and Alex,” snarled Deborah, “They were friends and nothing more than that. And you know that they were close, which is why you are telling all these things publicly.”
“I have proof of their affair you know, want to see them?”
Deborah curled her lip and looked away from him. Jack seemed confident about what he was saying, it enraged Deborah even more. The assistant outside the office was trying to make out whatever was happening in the office, but Jack’s office was sound-proof.
“And what kind of proofs have you manipulated this time?”
“I didn’t need to manipulate anything,” replied Jack, calmly, “but if you insist, I must tell you about the plane fares, which needed some manipulation to get the information. And right now, I don’t have the photographs; I might post them to you if you want.”
What? Explain yourself, please,” asked Deborah, confused.
“Alexander Gates left for Mexico two months ago; I think you already know that,” informed Jack, looking at Deborah, “Four days before he left, your friend had purchased tickets for Mexico as well for herself. Police Commissioner Bentley will provide you with the rest of the details, which he got from Alex’s office about his so called work there and from Emily's travel agent. Then you can be sure of what your good friend and my cheating wife had been capable of.”
Deborah was still not looking at Jack but she was thinking. Jack knew that she still did not believe a single word he had said.
“Can you leave now? Because I have to get...” and before Jack could finish, she interfered.
“You know, I believe you Winters are capable of anything,” said Deborah, “I want Emily, Jack. I don’t know how you will do it, I just want her in Silverdawn.”
“You are the journalist here, Debbie, you should...”

Don’t call me Debbie,” snarled Deborah, “But I believe, asking your precious grandmother where Emily and Alex really is, might do as well, don't you agree with me? She’ll definitely be knowing everything.”
“Don’t you dare involve my grandmother in this, Deborah Mason,” growled Jack, pointing at her, “That might be the last thing you do in this city, remember that. And get out of here right now.”
“I can see you’re still the favourite puppet,” scoffed Deborah, smiling, “But you remember this Jack, I want Emily. And if you don’t find her soon, I’ll make you very, veryunhappy.”
“I’m already unhappy,” replied Jack, and Deborah stormed out of his office without looking back.
