I have a family member who happened to marry the thief, and of course the family wants to be friends with the son in law.  Every time he visits, the butler calls the police over and over, sometimes costing thousands of dollars in prank call fines before I can dismiss the butler.  Very frustrating.

By the way, I have Apartment Life.

Fire the butler, hire a teenage nanny instead. Just don't ask for a mod to stop the police coming over and arresting the perv who gets into the sack with her. Tongue

This reminds me of another thread similar to the situation with charlatans, police and phones.

Charlatans and thieves are not meant to be married into families or become regular Sims by design. They will and will always be arrested no matter how they're related to the families they're in or not. I think the Charlatans use a NPC template that runs a routine to check for conditions to be met:

Is the Sim a Charlatan or not?
Is a Butler (similar NPC) present on the lot or not?

If both conditions are true, then the police will be called.

The same applies for thieves.

If Squinge or I was to create a mod to prevent the Butler or a similar NPC from calling the cops or a mod to prevent cops from coming, the game will be jacked - BFBVFS.

Simple solution is not to hire a butler for that lot you have a thief or charlatan residing on or even visit that lot.

Thanks Chaavik, that explains a lot.  I will get rid of the butler.
