After playing the sims 2 for almost 5 years I have finally decided to take the plunge and buy the sims 3.

I am still in the middle of installing it but I have been looking at the custom content and was wondering if you need certain expansions like in the sims 2 to install certain custom content because so far the custom content doesn't specify what I need to install certain items.

Thank you!

It depends on what type of cc you're talking about. As far as game mods go , it's about the patch level that you are at . If the mod concerns an EP specific behavior , obviously you'll need that EP (Like mermaid mods for IP) , otherwise the patch is the deciding factor. The current patch is 1.63 . I'm on 1.57 myself , some mods for 1.63 will work for me , some won't. I can also use some mods that were never updated to 1.57 ( or 1.63) , it just depends. Reading the downloaders comments is well worth the time if you're in doubt.

As far as standard cc , most CAS stuff ( if not almost all) is base game compatible. Clothing , makeup , shoes etc. Buy and build mode stuff varies , if something is based on an EA mesh , then you'll need the EP or SP that mesh came with. For example , DJ booths and the photo booth came with Showtime , so for anything involving those you'd need that EP.

I've found that most of the better creators will state if you need a certain EP for something to work /show up. Just like in Sims 2 , make a backup before trying new cc ( especially mods) and keep your new cc segregated so you can easily find it and get rid of it if need be.
