In Mexico, every town is plastered with posters for
lucha libre -- literally meaning “free fight.” These free-for-all wrestling matches aren’t for the timid. These battles between masked men almost always end up spilling into the audience, where chairs go flying and spectators run for cover.
The
luchadores often don’t reveal their real names, preferring to use stages names like the Blue Demon or Man of a Thousand Masks. El Santo, one of the most renowned wrestlers, ended up being buried in his mask.
I thought I’d introduce you to a few of the men whose masked faces are on the posters in my sim town:
This is
El Fénix, meaning “The Phoenix.” (He did rise from the ashes, coming back as this character after being unmasked in his final bout as El Matador.) The crowds call this young man Flaco -- meaning “Slim” -- because he lacks the girth of most wrestlers. But he’s wiry and strong, and more often than not wins out over bigger opponents. And his tattoo, the sacred heart, has won more than a few hearts of the ladies.
Here is El Fénix during a match. His mask is red, white, and green, the colors of the Mexican flag.
El Fénix is know for flashy moves, like this flying leap off the ropes.
Hey, get that camera out of the locker room! I don't have my mask on!
