jocko - this sounds like you have a corrupted file in the game files.  I have not experienced this exact error, but it sounds similar to a corrupt objects.package

Each CD/DVD has a giant zip file on it and you will need to locate the file and replace the game files for each EP as well as the basic game.

The file on the installation media is named compressed.zip - if you have the 4 CD installer for The Sims 2, I think it is in the one on CD 3

Extract one at a time, then place it in its corresponding folder as named below.

The normal location of the file on the hard drive for Windows is:

   C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\Objects

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 University\TSData\Res\Objects

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Nightlife\TSData\Res\Objects

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Open for Business\TSData\Res\Objects

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Pets\TSData\Res\Objects

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Seasons\TSData\Res\Objects

And MAYBE these next two as well:

   C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Family Fun Stuff\TSData\Res\Objects

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Glamour Life Stuff\TSData\Res\Objects

Please note that the names may be slightly different for the folders depending on what language version of the game and EPs you installed.
