If so, then how? I've assumed that you have to send a playable sim to join a secret society, but I'm not sure how to do that, and I'm afraid of not being able to play that sim again if I have them join the SS. Help?

In order to join the Secret Society, your playable sim must make friends with 3 SS members.  The easiest way to identify who is an SS member is to go to a community lot.  They frequently visit those in their blazers.  Tell them a joke to meet them.  Then do what you can there to make friends, or call them later.

Once you have been "abducted" and get your blazer, secret handshake, and spy decoder ring*, you can visit the SS lot any time you want.
