Regular Sims 2 & Castaway Stories -- separate?

Do these two games run separate, or is Castaway Stories like an expansion pack and just adds on?

I'm wondering if it will mess with any of my files on Sims 2, or if it'll just make it's own and be like a whole different game being installed.

Castaway Stories is a separate game, not an expansion pack .
It ought not mess with any of your Sims2 files.
Incidentally, it never hurts to back up your game files.

It will not do anything to you Sims to game, in fact it will install under a totally new directory called "Electronic Arts"

This is where it installs the files for game
C:\Documents and Settings\Aaliyah\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims™ Castaway Stories
