Game changes names

I've had this happen several times when I've installed new EP's or Stuff Packs the game changes the name of a sim to something completely random. It drives me crazy to the point where I have a new neighbourhood I'm too scared to start playing until I get Freetime. I know you can change it with Simpe (I've never done it tho) but I want to know if there is a way to prevent it in the first place. Thanks
