Just wondered... is it possible to place items outside your sims apartment in AL? Like potted plants and so on?

No, unles you change lot zoning to apartmentsublot but, I've had bldgs vanish from the neighborhood view and lost them doing that.

See the thread here about aptbase vs aptsublot.  Using the aptsublotspecifictoolsdisabled false will allow you to place things in the common areas.
