i just installed aparment life and i became a witch (or in my case a warlock) i went to cast spell and all the options are greyed out. how can ungrey them so i can cast spells?

Study magic and make reagents. The more they study magic, the more spells the sim learns. And they have to have the right combination and number of reagents to cast a spell. Treeag on MTS2 made a hack that lets you cast spells without reagents, too.

Place the cauldron from the witch/warlock's inventory somewhere on the lot. When you click on it, the option to make reagents should be there. The reagents are like ingredients. You'll get an animation that looks like this:

(good witch in the top picture)

The reagents (or spell ingredients) will then appear in your sim's inventory. When you have a look at the spell book it should tell you which and how many reagents you need to cast particular spells.
