Thanks for the advice. When I get a missing scalp on a downloaded Sim, it always remains missing; I cannot change it in Body Shop. All hair options are disabled. And the hair mesh itself is the donation item, so no hair recolors/retextures will work unless I have the mesh. So I am still stuck with a scalped David...

Thanks for the link! It's a great hair mesh. I am able to use it on other Sims... But I still get the same error on David as before. I even re-downloaded the Sim and reintalled it after I had the hair mesh, but it didn't change anything. Oh well...sigh. He looks great but without a scalp I can't use David in my game. Thanks again everyone for your helpful hints!
