Walking into the bathroom, she turned on the tap. She was surprised when warm water poured out. The heating must have been left on when everyone left. She looked at the shower and smiled weakly.
She eased her dirty clothes off and threw them into the dirty washing basket out of habit.
She let the room steam up before climbing under the water. Standing there she closed her eyes and enjoyed the sensation of the hot water running down her back like a comforting hand. Leaning her head back and letting the water fall over her face, washing away all the dirt, if only it could wash away the guilt and shame too.
She stretched her arm out and reached for the shampoo. Blindly she poured it into her palm and gently massaged it into her scalp. The scent that she normally associated with her father filled her nostrils. She had picked up his shampoo. She opened her eyes and let out a cry, looking at the bottle in horror as it fell from her hands. Happy memories of the family life she had destroyed played through her mind.
Leaning her body back against the cold tiles she curled up under the water and brought her knees up. It was only shampoo, but it brought back so many memories. She rested her head on her knees and rocked, trying to fight away the shame of what she felt from her actions.
The water began to get cool, and Morgan started to shiver, but she couldn’t move. Her head was stuck in the past, remembering everything she had destroyed.
Adam worked hard all day. He did his best to please Julie and to show her that she had not made a mistake taking a chance on him. She was nice, she didn’t work him too hard on his first day, no harder than he had worked himself anyway.
He cleaned the last of the tables and refilled the salt and pepper bottles. Julie came out from the kitchen.
“You did a good job today Adam.” she said smiling. “Now you get off home and take this.”
She handed him a carrier bag. There were left over bits of cake and a couple of cans of cola. “Thank you.” He said clutching the bag. She patted him on the shoulder and walked back into the kitchen.
Adam watched her and smiled inwardly to himself. For once he felt good about who he was.
He walked home quickly. Morgan had been home all day by herself for the first time. He knew she would be ok, but he didn’t want to leave her alone any longer than he had to.
Walking up to the trailer he frowned as he saw all the windows were dark. He had expected to see light glowing from the candles they used when the sun fell.
He pushed open the door hoping that she was asleep inside.
Lighting the closest candle to the door, the light showed him that the place was empty. It was as they had left it that morning.
Panic washed over him. Where would she go? She wouldn’t have gone to her Uncles. He sat down and put his head in his hands. Sighing he closed his eyes and tried to think of what she would do. The answer was simple. Her parents’ house. He had seen the papers that morning, he had tried to hide them from her, but he couldn’t protect her all day.
He knew where her parents' house was, she had told him the address when she had discussed going back. He had also read it in the paper. Although it didn’t give the exact address, it gave the street and he had a pretty good bet that he would be able to recognise it from Morgan’s descriptions.
Forgetting about the food and his empty stomach, he walked to the high street and caught the bus that went to her mother’s area. His eyes tried to shut as he sat there. He hadn’t realised how tired he actually was. The motion of the bus threatened to send him to sleep.
He reached up and opened the window next to him. The woman in the seat opposite tutted her dissatisfaction, but he ignored her.
The house wasn’t hard for him to find. Apart from the police tape and the broken windows the house was beautiful. He couldn’t see any lights on, but he had to check just to be sure.
He stood in the hall, trying to listen for movement. He heard the pipes in the house working. Straining his hearing more, he could hear the faint sound of sobbing.
He raced up the stairs taking them two at a time. The sound of running was louder upstairs and he easily pin pointed where it was coming from. He eased the door open and saw Morgan huddled in the corner of the shower.
Grabbing a towel off the rack he walked over to her, truned off the water and placed the towel round her to hide her dignity. She looked up at him as he eased her to her feet and secured the towel around her. Her skin was cold. He could feel the icy water dripping from her hair onto the bare flesh of his hands. He reached for another towel and placed that loosely round her hair.
He walked her gently out of the bathroom and led her into the nearest room. There was a dressing gown on the back of the door, he took it and placed it around her dressing her like you would a young child.
Lifting her in his arms, he felt her body start to shiver as he placed her on the bed and covered her with the duvet, before getting in beside her. She lay on the pillow, her eyes unfocused. He gently stroked the side of her cold face.
Morgan closed her eyes and leaned over to Adam placing her lips against his. Adam returned her kiss with a quick peck before he moved his face away and kissed her forehead. He pulled her into him as she rolled over and he moved closer, holding her to him from behind as they both fell asleep.
