Six years later

Morgan sat at the breakfast table studying. Adam had insisted that she got her self an education while he continued to work for Julie at the café. They had managed to afford a small flat with what he earned. It wasn’t anything special.

The building was old and worn, the people who lived there were mostly the bits of life that ‘normal’ people tend to ignore. But the rent was cheap and it was a proper roof over their heads.

They had furnished it as best they could. Most of the stuff had been donated by the regulars at the café. Adam had always tried to refuse their kind offers, but Julie was sneaky and had many a time had accepted on his behalf, arranging delivery while he was at work.

Morgan leant back in her chair and stretched. She hated studying. They had fought many times about it using the excuse that she didn’t want to go to college, so Adam had arranged for her to study from home. She hadn’t been able to think up an excuse to get out of it, so she had reluctantly given in.

The hope Adam had for her bettering her self spurred her on. He had worked so hard for her to be able to have this chance. As much as she hated it, she didn’t want to disappoint him.

Adam opened the door trying to balance the shopping in his arms as he locked it behind him. Morgan ran over to help him.
“Good day?” she asked.
“Yeah. Brilliant.” He said a little over enthusiastically. He saw her frown at his comment. “I’ll tell you over dinner, hope your hungry. Julie gave me loads today.”

Morgan set the table while Adam unpacked what he had got from the café and the market. He pulled out two wrapped up plates of roast beef and potatoes and placed them on the table. The smell made Morgan’s mouth water. She loved Julies cooking. Some of the flavours she had discovered over the last few years were amazing.

“So?” Asked Morgan. She couldn’t wait to hear what his news was, he looked so happy it had to be good.
“So? What?”
“You all excited. What is it?”

Adams face broke into a huge grim. “You know Julies daughter?”
“Yeah, Melody.”
“Yeah. She asked me out. We have a date on Friday.”

“Oh” Morgan’s heart sank. Suddenly she wasn’t so hungry anymore. She pictured Julie’s pretty daughter. She was blonde, slim, and clever. She had it all. She had been working for her mother while she was on a break from university. Morgan had met her twice; both times Melody had just looked down her nose at her.

Morgan put her fork down on her plate and looked down. The smell of the food suddenly turning her stomach.
“What's the matter?”
“I don’t feel so good.” She said as her heart slowly broke.
“Want me to get you some water?”
“No, I’ll go to bed. To much time studying I think.”
“Morgan?”
“Adam, just leave me alone.” She snapped. She didn’t mean to, but she was hurt and it just came out before she had time to think.

Adam watched her, confusion going through his head. What had he done? He didn’t feel like eating any more either. His mood suddenly low. He didn’t like to see Morgan I’ll. He didn’t want anything to be wrong with her.

He cleared the plates of uneaten food away. He had been so excited when he got home. He had been looking forward to telling Morgan his news; he thought she would be pleased.

He opened her door slightly and popped his head round to see if she was ok. She was asleep. He put his head down and closed her door behind him. Sighing he went to his own room and climbed into bed.

Morgan opened her eyes as the door closed. She wanted to call out to him, but she couldn’t. Burying her head into the pillow she closed her eyes and tried to force sleep to come.
