I know that I tend to make sims that are not the usual plastic stunning beauty package and as such aren't as appealing so it's really nice to have some positive feedback

Ali, I swear by MTS2's tutorials. I was uploading my self sim back a few months ago in mere minutes after using their beginner-friendly tutorials. I know they have a whole slew of tutorials, object creation, recoloring.
