Just one thing, where do they go when they run away? Are they still accessible in the game as townies? I've never seen this happen in the game so I don't know.

Is it possible to tweak this so that the Sim can run away only if she is really unhappy or has very weak relationship ties to her family? Or is this "as-is"?

It is already this way in the game.  No need for a mod to do that.

I was thinking about this a few days ago.. As I don't have many teens running around cuz when I had to reinstall the game, I just haven't gone back to finish those hoods, I wondered if this was possible.. Thanks for bringing more 'real life' to the game... There is always a disgruntled, :angry7:  all knowing teen somewhere...
