What is that little tube like thing beside your Sims's picture in gameplay(interface) and what does it do?

Are you talking about the temperature gage? If it's green that means your sim is fine. If the level raises and turns red, your sims is getting too hot and needs to cool down (ignoring it will give your sim a sun burn eventually...in extreme cases they can spontaniously combust). If the level lowers and turns blue, then your sim is too cold and needs to warm up. Ignoring it means your sim can freeze.
