I'm not sure why you're having this issue.  Mine does that every once in a while, but it usually doesn't stay that way.

Have you tried Lucas Easy Sims 2 Cheats? This program will give you your cheats, even if the cheat window doesn't open.

Open the program, type in your cheats (you'll only have to ever do this once.)  Pick a key that you want to associate with it.  The program must be open while your game runs (you can minimize it to the task bar)-it's so small though that it won't effect your game play. In game just hit the key combo for the cheat you want.  

The cheat window normally pops up, the program enters the cheat  and the window disappears.  I've found though that even if the cheat window does not pop up the cheat is active until you deactivate it.

It sounds more complicated than it actually is.

Can they be recolored?

it's the BV launcher that's faulty.

Base game compatible version (one recolor) requires a mesh which can be downloaded here
There may be a slight issue with the base game version, I've had trouble moving the painting once placed.

 

Since I have the patience of a 2 year old and the attention span of a flea, I made a bunch (16) more recolors from CD artwork, using in game meshes from Nightlife. Then I found out that the requester only has base game + university.  doh!

you have to change that in your graphics/performance options.  
Turn object hiding off.

level up to the highest level on your lot (roof view) make sure you have your roof on (all walls up).
press tab to put your game in cameraman mode
press and hold the Q key to sink down into the shot. Use your mouse to adjust your POV

Once you're in cameraman mode, you'll need to use your keyboard to control your field of vision as it takes away the UI (user interface).

c key will take your pictures
v key will start recording video , press v again to stop.

I forgot to mention that Seasons uses pixel shader version 3.0- so if your graphics card doesn't support that, the cheat may not work/may not always work.
