Chapter 9Life went on as normally as It could for Caleb and Emily. Caleb went back to the hospital for work and Emily continued to stay home. She took a little medical leave from her work so she could recover from loosing the baby. As far as Dr. Brown went Caleb didn't think that Emily had any idea what was going on until one day when Caleb forgot his cell phone at home. Emily had just gotten out of the shower when she heard his phone ring. She walked over to the night stand and looked at the caller ID. It was a local number so she answered it.
"Hello." She said
"Hello this is detective Stevens with the Michigan police department, Is Caleb Harrison available?" The man asked.
"Um no he is at work, he forgot his phone, can I take a message for him?" Emily asked.
"Sure can you just please tell him to give me a call back, this is regarding the Dr. Brown case." Mr. Stevens said.
"Ok, Um I'm not sure if I know whats going on but what do my husband and doctor have to do with a case your working on?" Emily asked getting rather upset that there was something going on behind her back.
"I'm sorry ma'am I'm unable to tell you thank information. All I can tell you is that Dr. Brown is being investigated by us and by a few other police departments in the U.S for fraud.
"Wow, um ok well I will have Caleb give you a call as soon as he gets home." Emily said hanging up the phone.
She sat down on the bed turning the phone over and over in her hands. How on earth did Caleb have anything to do with this whole thing, and how could that nice man who helped her conceive their child be mixed up in a fraud investigation. She thought about going down to the hospital and demanding some answers out of Caleb. She looked at the time. 10:47am, Caleb would be going on lunch in a few hours so she thought she would pick up some food on the way there and have a nice talk with her husband.
"Emily what are you doing here?" Caleb asked as he was just coming out of surgery.
"I thought we could have lunch together." She said holding up the Mc Donald's bags.
They went down the hall to the cafeteria and sat down. They started eating their food and didn't really say much to each other until Emily finally got the nerve to bring up her phone conversation with detective Stevens.
"So do you mind telling me what is going on, and why you have detectives calling your phone about some fraud case with Dr. Brown?" She asked trying to not sound mad.
"Oh Emily I don't want to have to talk about his here, cant it wait until I get home?" He asked
"No it cant wait Caleb, I want to know what is going on and why you have kept whatever this is a secret from me?" She said loud enough to make a few heads turn and look at them.
"Shhhh, hun please don't make a scene here, I will tell you ok?" He pleaded
"Ok." She said in a more quieter tone.
"The night we came home from the hospital I got online to look into other ways for us to have a baby because the IVF is just so expensive. So as I was looking I opened up the forum that you have been on lately and found a post saying that there may be a fake doctor in our area. I was curious so I opened up the thread and read what it had to say. A woman just a state over from us gave birth to twins and when they started looking less and less like them she had them DNA tested and found out that her husband was not the father of her children." He paused for a minute and Emily stared at him blankly so he continued
"So I kept reading and at the bottom of the post there was a picture and a few other names that this so called doctor was going by and sure enough there was Dr. Brown staring me in the face. I didn't want to tell you right away, after loosing the baby I didn't want to upset you any more. I'm sorry for you finding out like this but I just wanted to make sure the time was right to tell you." Caleb said.
Emily still looked at him and didn't say a word. She was trying with all her might to hold back the tears. Caleb grabbed her hands and gave them a kiss.
"Hunny are you going to be ok?" He asked
"Yeah Ill be fine, this is just all a lot to take in. She said. "So do you think that he did that to us?"
Caleb put his head in his hands and took a deep sigh.
"He very well could have, thats why I'm trying to work with detective Stevens to put him behind bars so he cant ever do this to anyone again. In the mean time I talked to a few colleagues today and got the number of a new doctor for us to go see. That is if you still want to continue this IVF thing?" He asked
"Yeah of course, well unless you don't want to?"
"Oh you know I do hun. So how about we finish lunch up here, Ill get you those numbers and you can give them a call whenever you are ready to. He said.
They finished up lunch and Caleb kissed her goodbye before grabbing some charts and walking down the hall. She looked at the little piece of paper and read the names and numbers to herself. She stood there looking around the hospital for a few moments before walking outside. Once she was out of the hospital she took her cell out of her purse and dialed a number on the piece of paper Caleb gave her. A receptionist picked up "Hello yes my name is Emily Harrison and Id like to set up an appointment please."
