Morgan ignored him all the way to the hospital. He tried to hold her hand as the ambulance zoomed its way through the streets with its siren blaring, but every time he reached over, she moved her hand further and further away.
He followed silently as the paramedics wheeled her into the hospital on a trolley. He didn’t know what to do with himself. If it hadn’t been for the other patients in the accident and emergency waiting room he would have broken down and cried.

“I don’t want him here” said Morgan as the paramedic locked the brakes on the trolley ready to transfer her to the waiting bed. “I want him to leave.”

Adam stood back out of the way, his bottom lip quivering as a tear escaped and rolled down his face. “Morgan please don’t do this.”
“I don’t want you here.”
“This is my baby too Morgan, for god sake let me just be here for you with this.”

Morgan doubled over as more pain ripped through her. Panting she screwed her face up “get out” she said forcing her voice.
“I think you should leave” said the nurse as she approached the cubicle.

Adam was crying now, ice spiked in his stomach and his throat constricted as he watched Morgan in agony, knowing he couldn’t do anything, couldn’t even go to comfort her.
“Its my baby too” he protested to the nurse
“I’m sorry but we have to respect Morgan’s wishes”

Adam hadn’t noticed the security guard stood behind him
“I love you” he mouthed to Morgan as the guard pulled him away crying
He was escorted outside by the man
“Just stay on the grounds, but don’t come in. She might change her mind, they usually do” he said to Adam as he gave a sympathetic smile

Adam sat on the bench outside. The sun shone down on him, but he didn’t feel it, his body was cold and shivering as he cried into his hands, not caring who saw him. All he wanted was to go to Morgan and to be with her through what ever was happening.

Here take this said a voice a couple of hours later. It'll warm you up.
Adam turned and look, the guard held his hand out brandishing a steaming polystyrene cup.
“What is it? He asked reaching for the cup
“Just hot chocolate from the machine. Thought it might do you good.”
The guard paused and watched as Adam took a cautious sip of the chocolate.

“She is ok you know” he said
“Who is? Morgan?”
“Yep. Fast asleep when I came out. And that baby of your has one strong heart beat, heard it my self making the machine bleep away.”
Adam sat in silence drinking his chocolate. The guard patted him on the shoulder before going back into the hospital.
People walked past, some stared as they walked towards the doors and others only dared to give a quick glance. Adam ignored then all.

"Mr king?"
At first Adam didn’t hear his name being called, he hadn’t been expecting it so wasn’t listening

"Mr King?" The doctor at the door tried again a little louder, finally getting his attention.
"Is she ok?" asked Adam panicked. "Is the baby ok?"
"Their both fine Mr King" she said as her face broke into a professional smile.

"Morgan seems to have gone into an early labour. so far we have been able to slow it down. We gave her something to stop it and she is responding to it."
"And the baby?"
"The baby's fine, no signs of distress so we are hopeful that the pregnancy will continue for another month at least."
"Thank you" he said sighing. He was thankful that the doctor had taken the time to come out and talk to him about it, she didn’t have too.
"She's asking to see you"
"She is?"
"Yes, but please don’t upset her, not if we want the baby to stay put"
"I wont"

Eagerly he followed the doctor into the hospital. Morgan had been moved to a private room on the labour ward. She was sat propped up on the hospital bed. Her face was pale and she looked tired.

The gentle rhythm of the machine next to her bleeped. It took a moment for Adam to hear it and for the sound to register.
"Is that...?"
"Yes. It’s the baby." She said flatly.

Ignoring her tone, he couldn’t help but smile as he heard his child’s heartbeat coming through the machine that was attached to Morgan. He had heard it before in the doctor’s office, but it never ceased to amaze him. His love for his unborn child was already strong enough. What would it be like when he or she was actually born?

"What happened at the market?" Asked Morgan
"Nothing. Not what you think happened anyway"
"Well you were kissing Melody, why should I think any thing else?"
"And if you had stayed around for another 10 minutes you would have seen me slap her across the face."

Morgan got up from the bed carefully not to disturb the wires and stared at him intently she wanted to believe him, she really did, but in the back of her mind was doubt. Though she really didn’t doubt Adam, it was her self where the insecurity lay, she was taking it out on him and she knew it, she just didn’t know how to stop.

"I’m sorry" she said looking away from him. "I know it was nothing I saw the way she had hold of you, but my mind made up its own decision before I had time to think. I'm sorry I pushed you away." She whispered.

Adam reached out and ran his hand down her face the way he always did. "It’s ok Morgan. I'm sorry too."
Adams hand felt wet, he looked at her face and saw that she had been crying. How had he missed that before? "Don’t cry."
"What if something happens to the baby?"
"Nothing will happen. It will be fine I promise."

She looked at him hopefully. She wanted to believe him, but she couldn’t. She had to prepare her self for the worst.
"You’re going to rest and then you and your tummy are going to come with me. I have a surprise for you."
"I was going to show you this afternoon, but... but it will wait till you can come home." He said smiling.
